Chillicothe Men in the Civil War

Submitted by: David Herron

The soldier during the Civil War when not marching or fighting was in total boredom from camp life.  During winter quarters most camp structures became permanent, using logs or loose boards to build sides onto their tents.  It was while in camp that the soldier wrote most of his letters home and occupied himself with card playing and camp crafts.  They would use anything at hand to carve or construct dice, chess pieces, pipes, mirror frames and dominoes.  Some of the materials used were wood, bone and bullets.

This war was fought by the young and brave of both the Union and the Confederate states.  The men of the Union to preserve the Union and the men of the Confederacy to protect their way of life.  The only thing worse than the awful slaughter on the battlefield was that we were killing Americans.

THE FOLLOWING ENTRIES WERE TRANSCRIBED FROM THE ADJUTANT GENERAL'S REPORT OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS. THE REMARKS COLUMN IS TAKEN AS IT APPEARS IN THE REPORT. THERE MAY HAVE BEEN MISTAKES MADE BY THE PERSON ENTERING AT THE TIME. ALSO THE SPELLING OF THE MEN'S NAME COULD BE INCORRECT DUE TO THE FACT THAT MOST PEOPLE AT THE TIME COULD NOT READ OR WRITE, AND THE MUSTERING OFFICER WROTE THE NAME AS HE THOUGHT IT SHOULD BE SPELLED. I DON'T KNOW IF ALL THE MEN FROM CHILLICOTHE WHO SERVED ARE LISTED. THE NAMES WERE TAKEN FROM A SEARCH OF THE RECORDS HELD ON THE INTERNET BY THE STATE OF ILLINOIS ARCHIVES PAGE.
