Ed L. Alexander
Death of Ed L. Alexander
Peoria, Illinois 11 May 1893
Particulars have just been received of the death of Edward L. Alexander who for a number of years was a postal clerk in the 6th division and later chief clerk in the 8th division of the railway mail service at San Francisco, California. His death occured last September in Garrison,Montana.
A friend writes, "His death was sad and sudden. He was retiring to his bed, and evidently began undressing, when he took a coughing spell and bleeding at the lungs commenced. The flow of blood was so great that it strangled him and he died in his room, solitary and alone; and was found the next morning in a kneeling position, one arm resting on the bed, his head bent forward."
Alexander enlisted at Monmouth, Illinois, April 1861, in Captain Josiah Moore's Company, which came to Peoria and went into camp and was mustered into the U.S. service 25 May 1861 as Company F, 17th Regiment Illinois Volunteers. He was discharged 24 April 1862 on account of sickness. He retuned home and after his health was regained, he was attached to "McAllister's Battery." Soon after the close of the war, he entered the railway mail service running from Chicago to Burlington, Iowa for several years, was transferred to San Francisco, California and was in the service until a short time before his death, when he went to Garrison, Montana on account of failing health. He was a capable, industrious man and had many warm friends who will regret to hear of his death.
William Alexander, a brother was also a member of Company F, 17th Regiment Illinois Volunteer Infantry and was killed in the Siege of Vicksburg, Mississippi 24 May 1863. He was a good soldier, beloved by all his comrades.
The Alexander family were residents of Monmouth for a number of years. There are yet living one sister and two brothers, James of Chicago and Isaac and Libbie of Kansas City, Missouri. Many of the older residents of Monmouth will remember the family and the comrades of Company F, 17th Regiment will remember with tender regard the two brothers whose names were first called at "roll call" and who have both answered that roll call from the other shore. R.M. Campbell, Peoria, Illinois.
