After an illness which developed a year ago last February, Stephen Burre, an old resident of this city, died at 6:30 o'clock last evening at his home, 1500 Smith Street, within ten days of reaching the age of seventy-three years.
Mr. Burre was born in Lucerne,...[part cut off or missing]...to the United States in 1866, landing in New York on May 5.  Immediately on landing, he was united in marriage to Miss Kate Bachman, who was born in the same city as he and crossed the ocean on the same steamer.  They came direct to Peoria and for twenty-eight years Mr. Burre was engaged as a market gardener, cultivating a tract of land on the corner of Seventh and Western avenues. He retired from active pursuits five years ago.

"MRS. KATHERINE BURRE DEAD.
Peorian of Over Half Century Residence, Passed Away in Her Seventy-Sixth Year.

The winter's mortality list among the older residents of Peoria is a long one and the latest honored name to be added is that of Mrs. Katherine Burre who died last night at 11:15 p. m. at her home, 1319 So. Adams street, in her seventy-six year.
In spite of her advanced age, Mrs. Burre enjoyed very good health with no serious illness in years until she was seized with stomach trouble last Wednesday and sank steadily until the end.  She is widely known as widely esteemed, a woman of rare and beautiful character, devoted to her home and
family.
Mrs. Burre's maiden name was Katherine Bockman [obviously the writer was not knowledgable of German spellings].  She was born in Lucerne, Switzerland, October 6, 1840.  In the early sixties the family came to the United States and Peoria has been her home for 53 years. She became the wife of the late Stephen Burre, who died five years ago.
She is survived by eight children.  Mrs. Samuel Highberger [or Heiberger], Gilman, Ill.; Mrs. Rose Langenfelter, Stephen and Robert Burre of Denver;Mrs. Nicholas Eberhardt, Edward, Frederick, Robert [obviously an error as Robert was mentioned as being in Denver] and Frank Burre, Peoria.  She also leaves nine grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements will not be announced until the children in Denver are heard from."

John Bowars
January 15, 1874
Death of JOHN BOWARS
The news came Saturday from Chillicothe of the death of Mr. JOHN BOWARS, after a seven week illness at his brother-in-laws, Christopher Hartenbower, of a complication of diseases of a dropsical and consumption nature. Mr. Hartenbower lives upon a stock farm of Mr. Bowars, of 320 acres or more, which is run by both on shares. Mr. Bowars went down there about two months ago, and while there was taken sick, causing death. He made a will, before his death, and was conscious till the last, having been visited by Mr. Edward Wood, the day of his dissolution. Mr. Bowars has lived in and about Henry over 20 years, was half owner, and for many years help run the steam grist mill in the north end of town. He was a quiet, unassuming and good citizen, being at one time elected alderman of the first ward of this city. By his industry and frugality he accumulated a considerable property, among which, besides his home estate and mill property in this city, he has two farms in Peoria county; also one in LaSalle county, where his brother Joseph now resides, and with whom he and his two children have made their home the past year; also a farm in Indiana and another in Kansas. We are told that it was Mr. Bowars' dying wish that his brother Joseph Bowars should have the use of the farm he now lives upon as long as he lived. Mr. Bowars wife was a Hartenbower, who died some two years ago, the surviving heirs of the estate being two young orphan girls. The remains were brought to Henry on Monday; appropriate services held at the Episcopal church, where the funeral cortege conveyed the remains to their resting place in the cemetery north of town.
