Last Monday afternoon about five o'clock the citizens of our little city were startled
by the report that Mrs. Joseph Clayton had attempted suicide by shooting herself,
which in fact proved true, her death occuring one hour later.
It seems that through domestic trouble Mrs. Clayton had attempted this rash act on
one occasion before, but was prevented from carrying them out.
Mrs. Clayton comes of a highly respected family of Coulterville, and her many friends
of her former home as well as of our city, can only spread the mantle of charity over
this seemingly rash act of hers and leave to Him who doeth all things well.
Mrs. Clayton leaves a husband and one six months' old baby besides a host of friends
to mourn her untimely death.
Funeral services were held at the U. P. Church last Wednesday afternoon at 3 o'clock,
conducted by Revs. H. B. Wooding and N. Childs, after which the remains were laid to
rest in the I. O. O. F. cemetery.

Contributors notes:
Kate Marshall Kennedy was born about 1885 to Lewis (Louis) D. Kennedy
and Nettie M. Kennedy in Randolph County. She was married about 1906.
The first child born to the marriage of Joseph & Kate Clayton died about 2 months
after birth in 1907. A second child was born in Feb. 1910 but just a few short months
later Kate commited suicide. It is uncertain what happened to her husband Joseph.
Family lore says he also commited suicide later - does anyone know if he is buried
near her in the IOOF Cemetery?
Their child was raised by relatives and never knew her parents.
