John Dickey

John Dickey, an old veteran, died Sunday morning, Nov. 19, at 4:15 o'clock at his home
in Tilden from hemorrhage of the stomach at the age of 71 years. Deceased was born in
1840 on a farm northeast of Tilden, where he grew to manhood. In 1862, when soldiers
were wanted to defend the Union, he enlisted as a private in Co. B, 111th Illinois Infantry,
and was with General Sherman in the memorable march to the sea. When the Civil War
was over Mr. Dickey returned to his old home in Grand Cote Prairie and again followed
the peaceful occupation of farming until six years ago when he removed to Tilden. He
was married to Miss Sarah Margaret Kennedy, who survives him. He leaves no children,
but his death is mourned by scores of relatives and friends. Funeral services were held in
the United Presbyterian church at Tilden Nov. 20 conducted by Rev. Wm. Patterson,
pastor of the Reformed Presbyterian church, of which deceased was a member. Rev.
Bailey, pastor of the U.P. church at Tilden, assisted in the services. Interment was made
in the Old Salem cemetery. Six of Mr. Dickey's comrades acted as pallbearers: John
Piper of Oakdale, Jesse McBride, Christy Kingston of Coulterville, Joseph Adams of
Marion, J.A. Wilson and Philip Lumbattis of Marissa.
