Mrs. Martha J. Gass, widow of Ben Gass, died on Sunday, August 30, at
the home of her daughter, Mrs. Otto Tanner, two miles west of
Pinckneyville at the age of 73 years and ? months. Her husband died
in 1920.
Mrs. Gass is survived by seven children, two sons, James and Merwin
Gass, both living in Perry county, near Pinckneyville, and
five daughters, Mrs. Otto Tanner, Mrs. James Williamson, Mrs. Clara
Nehrkorn, Mrs. Jacob Williamson and Mrs. Lucian Pyatt, all living
in Perry county 28 grand children and 4 great grand children.
Mrs. Gass was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A.J. Logan, pioneer settlers
of Perry county, who lived near the town of Oakdale in Washington
county.
The funeral was held Tuesday last at Concord Church, near
Pinckneyville. Services were conducted by Rev. Mal Keene, Baptist
minister. Mrs. Gass was a life long member of that denomination.
Mrs. Gass was a sister of Robert O. Logan, of Ashley, who accompanied
by his wife and their daughter, Mrs. John Merkelbach, attended the
funeral. Two other brothers, Lem Logan of West Chester, lowa, Al
Logan of Washington, la., and a sister, Mrs. Lottie Gass, of West
Chester, la., also attended the funeral.
