Death of William Appuhn, Honored Farmer-Citizen

In the passing of William H. Appuhn, Sr., 77, early Sunday morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs John Seibert, on East Main, this community lost another of its stalwart citizens, a man generally beloved for his kindly, genial personality and for the immutable ideals of honor and integrity that were his.

Striken several weeks ago with an ailment which at the time appeared of little consequence, mr. Appuhn's condition rapidly grew weaker as the days passed. A week or more ago a specialist from St. Louis was summoned to diagnose the case and found a condition too far for surgery or medical treatment.

The aged gentleman passed away peacefully at 4:25 Sunday morning, surrounded by members of his family who had kept constant vigil for days and nights.

Funeral rites will be heldat the First Evangelical Church at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon. The pastor, Rev. John H. Mauthe will officiate and will be assisted by Rev. William B. Weltge of St. Louis, former DuQuoin minister.

Interment will be made at the Old DuQuoon Cemeterywhere other members of the family are buried.

William H. Appuhn, Sr., was born near Red Bud, Illinois on October 4, 1861, the son of Mr. and Mrs, Henry Appuhn, sturdy German farmers of that community. In early life he manifested a fondness and adaptability for things agricultural and later became one of Pery county's most successful farmers and revered citizens.

Mr. Appuhn was married to Emma heberer in this city on October 29, 1890 and this community had since been their home. Mrs Appuhn preceded her husband in death several years ago.

The Appuhn home, during the years the sons and daughters were growing into manhood and womanhood, lay along the present state highway, a short distance west of Old DuQuoin. It was there that the deceased, a man of rugged character, toiled over the years rearing a family who were later to become substantial citizens of the community.

A lifelong communicant of the Evangelical faith, William Appuhn aside from his devotion to family and church, perhaps was best . . . . axiom that William Appuhn's word "is as good as his bond" had become traditional among the generations of Perry county people who knew him intimately and dealt with him over the years.

Only recently this characteristic in Mr. Appuhn's life was illustrated when he prepared deeds ot mineral and oil rights to several tracts of land he owned near Old DuQuoin and delivered them, with only the legal consideration involved, to the present owners of the surface. when Mr. Appuhn thought there was apossibility oil might be found in that area he told friends he desired that persons who had since acquired the surface derive full benefit from mineral or oil resources. He promptly signed deed to the tracts in question and delivered them.

During the past six years Mr Appuhn had spent much of his time here at the homes of his son, Albert J. Appuhn, on south Hickory and with his daughter, Mrs. John Seibert, on East Main. these with other members of his family were generous in their ministrations to him.

Surviving are three sons, Herman Appuhn, who resides on a farm near the home-place southeast of town, Albert J. Appuhn, southern Illinois sales representative for the B. F. Goodrich Company, and William Appuhn, Jr., certified public accountant of Quincy, two daughters, Mrs. laura Struck of St. Louis and Mrs. Helen Seibert of DuQuoin and 7 grandchildren.

One son, John Appuhn and one daughter, Mrs. Flora Appuhn Farthing, preceded their father in death.

The remains have been taken to the Seibert home, 540 East main where friends may call until the hour for services tomorrow after- . . .
