Russel L. Benedict
February 9, 1916 - May 3, 1997

Cutler -- Russel L. Benedict, 81, died at 10:47 a.m. Saturday, May 3, 1997, in Memorial Hospital in Chester.

      Services will be at 1p.m. Tuesday in Wilson Funeral Home in Steeleville, with the Rev. Kevin M. Carrothers officiating. Burial will be in Cottom Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today and from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Masonic services by Alma Lodge 497 AF & AM in Steeleville will be at 7:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.

      Memorials may be made to the Khoury League, First Baptist Church or the Reformed Presbyterian Church.

      Mr. Benedict was a retired coal miner from Captain Mine.

      He was a member of the Reformed Presbyterian Church, Alma Lodge 497 AF & AM in Steeleville and Steeleville Chaptster 738 OES.

      He was born February 9, 1916, in Cutler to Thomas S. Sarah (Browning) Benedict.

      He married Helen L. Francis on June 16, 1951 in Denmark, IL. She survives.

      Other survivors include three daughters and two sons-in-law, Judy Benedict of Odem, Texas, and Becky and Jim Sickmeyer and Deb and Randy Rathert, all of Campbell Hill; three grandchildren, Krista, Kent and Kody Rathert, all of Campbell Hill; special friends, Sandra Blaha and Kathy Reaves; two sisters, Gladys Thomas of Belleville and Delores Myers of Ava; and several nieces and nephews.

      His parents, four brothers, Clyde, Harley, Stanley and Eugene, and one infant sister preceded him in death.
