Charles Wesley Bickerdike was born in Thorner, Yorkshire, England, Oct. 20th, 1842 and died May 31st., 1914 at 5:15 P.M.,
aged 71 years, 7 months and 10 days.
During the month of May 1843, he came with his parents to this country and settled near Griggsville, Ill. He spent his entire life with the exception of seven years in this state. The seven years he and his family lived in Florida. The 21st day of October 1869, he was united in marriage with Ann Eliza Shrigley of New Salem, Ill. To this home can one child, a daughter, Jennie. Among the many relatives who will miss his presence are his companion and daughter who reside near Baylis Ill.: two brothers, Richard and Robert, who live in Tyler, Texas and quite a large number of nieces and nephews. During the year 1867, while the Rev. Mr. Newman was pastor, he was converted and united with the Methodist Espicopal church at Bethel. He remained a member of Methodist Episcopal until his death. He enlisted in Co. H, 73rd Ill., Infantry, Aug. 7th 1862 and was mustered out June 12th, 1865. He was in every engagement his regiment took part in. Many of his friends say they never saw a better solider. It is said that no one loved his home more or made greater sacrifices for it than he. We sometimes speak of three things that are simular~~Heaven, home and happiness. As he loved his home so well wa are hopeful that a heavenly home is his to-day. The funeral services were conducted by Dennis W. Park at Bethel church June 2nd at eleven o'clock. The member of the G.A.R. were present and some acted as pall bearers. Interment at Bethel Cemetery
