Fred Valerius, Sr.
August 24, 1851 - January 16, 1935

Fred Valerius, Sr.

      Fred Valerius, Sr., son of Pete and Maragrate Valerius, was born in Bensfield, Germany, August 24, 1851, passed away at his home in Willisville, Illinois, January 16, 1935, at the age of 84 years, 4 months and 22 days. He came to America with his mother at the age of nine years and lived near DuQuoin until July 21, 1879. He and Elizabeth Hogg were united in marriage and moved to their farm near Denmark, Illinois. To this union one son was born.

      Mr. Valerius lived on his farm until 1914 when he moved to Willisville. His wife died there 14 years ago. He continued to live there until his death, 21 years.

      In January, 1922, he was united in marriage the second time to Mary Tecklenberg. He never affiliated with any church, but attended different ones. He believed in a higher power and had faith in his Lord. When a boy he would walk nine miles with his mother to church.

      He helped many young and older people financially to get a start in life. He was a kind father and a good neighbor. He never refused to help anyone in need.

      He leaves to mourn his going, a wife, one son, F. M. Valerius, five grandchildren, Dwight, Beulah, Homer, Fern and LaVaughn Valerius and a great granddaughter, Betty Jean Valerius, one stepson, Gus Tecklenberg of Willisville, Illinois, a step-daughter Miss Minnie Kennedy of St Louis, Missouri, and a host of other relatives and friends.

      Funeral services were conducted at the Denmark Church Friday, January 18, by Elder Marion Wilson of Carbondale. Burial in Cottom Cemetery.
