WILLIAM H. SMITH

Died, at 12:10 p.m. Monday, March 2, at his home
four miles east of Tamaroa, William H. Smith, aged
66 years, 11 months, and 18 days.

He was born March 20, 1829 in St. Clair County and
lived on his farm four miles south of Belleville until June
1873, when he, with his family, moved to Perry County
to the farm where he resided up to the time of his death.

Deceased was married to Miss Elizabeth Miller, his
surviving widow, March 1863, and leaves five children:
Dr. James W. Smith, of Cutler; Mrs. Fred Moeser of
Freeburg; Miss Ellen A. Smith, a teacher of St. Clair
County public schools; Benjamin J. Smith, of Louisiana,
MO.; and Edwin W. Smith, of Tamaroa. He also leaves
two brothers, Samuel Smith of Fredonia, Kansas; and
Benjamin Smith, of Perry County, and one sister Mrs.
Martha J. Gregg of Colorado.

The deceased was a man of excellent habits, fine
principles and possessed in a high degree those
traits of character that commended him to the confidence,
respect and good will of all about him. He was a friend of
education and educational measure always received his
earnest cooperation and hearty support.
His political sympathies were with the Republican party,
always taking a great __ in the political issues of the day.
