AGED MERCHANT DIES AT NOON AT HOME
Hillard Worthington, 73 Succumbs WAS FORMER ALDERMAN Has Been In Busness in This City Since 1906 - Funeral Friday P. M. Hillard Worthington, 73-year-old DuQuoin merchant and former city alderman, died at his home, Number two North Line street at 12:15o'clock this afternoon after a lingering illness which has kept him bedfast for almost six weeks. Death followed a heart attack. Mr. worthington had been in failing health for the past year and had not been active in business for about the same period. Proprietor of the H. Worthington and Sona Dry Goods establishment on North Division street, Mr. Wprthington had been in busness in this city since 1906. Prior to his moving to North Division street he had conducted a general merchandising establishment on East Main street in the building occupied by the Frank Wells store. He had been in the North Division street location for the past two years. Most of that time, however, his only son, Alva, has been in charge of the business. Born February 8, 1861, Mr. Worthington camre to this city in 1868 shortly after both of his parents had died. An orphan from the time he started life in this city, Mr. Worthington ........... located in the Ebenezer school near here. He served as alderman under Mayor Arthur E. Angel at one time and was a member of the Masonic Lodge.
Although funeral arrangments have not been announced it was believed the services would be held from the
Methodist church Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Burial will be made in the Old DuQuoin cemetery. Mr.

Mrs. Worthington Rites at First M. E. Church Friday Funeral rites for Mrs. Emma Worthington, 76, life-long DuQuoin resident and member of one of the city's estimable families will be held from the First M. E. church at two o'clock Friday afternoon. The pastor, Rev. J. E. Shafer, will officiate. Interment will be made in the Old DuQuoin cemetery. As told in these columns yesterday, Mrs. worthington passed away quietly at her home, No. 2 North Line street, at 12:35 Wednesday, following a recurrent attack of an ailment from which she had long suffered. She had been more or less of an invalid for the past eight years but had been able to be up and about her home and to enjoy auto rides until shortly before her last attack. Mrs. Worthington whose maiden name was Emma Wolf, was born here July 5, 1861, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs, William Wolf, early residents of Perry county. She was united in marriage to Hillard W. Worthington who preceded her in death February 14, 1934. Mrs. Worthington had been a life-long member of the First M. E. church of Du Quoin and was active in her membership until ill health precluded. She also held membership in the local Eastern Star chapter. During the years Mrs. worthington had suffered declining health she was tenderly cared for by her son and only child, Alva G. Worthington, well known business man, whose ministrations to his mother's comfort were as unceasing as they were devoted. Aside from her son Mrs Worthington had no close relatives. |
