BIOGRAPHIES Pike County IL
Born January 1st 1830 in New York. Son of Tuttle and Mary A. Mitchell Mallory.
J. H. Mallory, dealer in dry-goods, clothing, boots and shoes. This house was established in 1863 by Louis Angle, who was succeeded by Sweet & Mallory. This co-partnership existed until 1879, when Sweet retired. Mr. M. carries a stock of $13,000 to $15,000, and controls a large trade. He is a native of New York city, where he was born Jan. 1, 1830; came to this county in 1846, and engaged in farming until he entered upon a mercantile pursuit. In 1852 he married Miss Annetta E. Brown, a native of New York. Of this union one child is living, George. Mr. M. is Trustee of the Christian Church, and is one of the solid, enterprising business men of Barry. Married Samantha A. Jones May 1st 1856 in Pike County, Illinois. She was born 1823 in New York. Daughter of James H.and Waty Jerome Jones.
The School Directors in 1863 were Calvin Davis, N.P. Hart and J. H. Mallory. (Pages from 1880 Pike County History by Chas. C. Chapman & Co.)
A man named Davis got to peeping around Mallory’s house at night to see some girls, and Mallory, discovering the fact, ran out with a gun and shot Davis as he dodged behind a cedar bush, and killed him. This occurred at Barry. Mallory was indicted October 14, 1876, for manslaughter. The case dragged along in the Courts until April 6, 1878, when the accused was acquitted.

Married Mrs.Bassina Hill McCarver February 3rd 1884 in Franklin County, Illinois. Bassina was the widow of William McCarver. Daughter of William B. and Lucy Roberts Hill.
John Mallory moved to New York to a Soldiers home sometime between 1910 and 1915. He came home to visit in 1921 to see Mary.
