Riss Trucking Company

The Barry Adage July 5, 1939

The Riss Trucking company will locate a terminal in Barry, making the city a division point on its Kansas City-Chicago run. Definite information on this decision was given to the officers of the Barry Chamber of Commerce last Friday evening by Richard R. Riss, president of the company, and G.L. Tynefield, chief engineer. The truck line officials completed a lease for the Hazelrigg barn, which will be used for a terminal, and this morning carpenters and plumbers started teh remodeling of the structure to make it useable for the Riss company.

For several weeks officers of the company have been seeking a location about mid-way between Kansas City and Chicago as a division point for the changing drivers on its trucks. Officers of the company have held conferences with Chamber of Commerce officials in several cities near the half-way point, and as Friday following the visit of Mr. Riss, the announcement was made that Barry best suited the needs of the company and that they would come here.

Drivers working the run will live in Barry, with their families and houses and apartments will be needed for them. At leasat 30 or more families are expected to eventually come here. Some of the drivers are married and some are single explained officials of the company. Some have furniture and some are living in furnished apartments in Kansas City. Houses, apartments and rooms will be needed to take care of the operators who will work out of Barry.

The Riss company is one of the large outfits operating in the south and mid-west. Its head quartes are in Kansas City and the line between that point and Chicago is one of the most important ones. At the present time two drivers take the trucks through from one city to the other. Under the new set-up one driver will handle a truck to Barry between Kansas City and Chicago and here it will be taken over by the second driver and the trip completed. Truck drivers are allowed to be on the road only 10 hours, and the trip between Barry and Kansas City and between Barry and Chicago can be completed in that span of time.

Included among the persons who will be sent here will be a supervisor, one or two maintenance men, and as many drivers as are needed to operate the fleet of trucks. The drivers are paid on a mileage basis and will receive approximately $150 per month for the runs out of Barry. Their checks will be sent here and the establishment of the terminal should mean a monthly payroll of between $4000 and $5000 for the Barry community.

Some remodeling will be necessary to make the Hazelrigg barn useable for the company. An office will be maintained there and lockers and showers will be installed for the use of the drivers. Doorways and overhead room will be extended so that the tractors and trailers can be pulled into the barn, as all trucks will be checked by an inspector when they reach the terminal. It is also probable that minor repairs will be taken care ofhere, and one or two tractors will be kept available for emergency use.

Requirement sof the company also were that it must hve telegraphic and phone service available on a 24 hour basis and that the city must have an all night restaurant. Barry met all of those requirements as well as having an ideal site for a terminal in the barn.

Workmen began the remodeling this morning and expect to have it in readiness for use by the Riss Co. by July 10. Plans of the company as announced by Engineer Tynefield call for the change over to be made by July 15. It is likely explained the engineer, that the supervisor who will work out of Barry will move here before that date.

The trucking company will buy no gas in Barry, as enough is carried on the trucks to make the entire run between Kansas City and Chicago. The company's hauling contract is said to be such that there is little chance that operations will be curtailed. We are moving into Barry to stay, said one of the officials.

The officials of the Chamber of Commerce is due considerable credit in bringing the Riss Company to Barry. They have met with truck on several occasions and on Friday spent several hours with President Riss and Engineer Tynefield. Following the conference the truck line officials investigated one other probably location and then telephones Barry with the announcement.
