William S. Freeman, a native son of Pleasant Hill and an educator for 34 years, retired this past spring from the Triad Community Unit in Troy where he was assistant superintendent. He had been in the unit since 1950 and was instrumental in developing many educational programs and curricula.

His first teaching job had been in a rural school in Calhoun county in 1941-42. After serving two years in the U.S. Navy, he returned to the education field and taught in the Kampsville grade and high school for one year. He went to Troy in 1946 and taught in the Troy public school until 1950 at which time he assumed work in the Troy community unit. He joined the Triad setup in 1954.

Freeman received his elementary and secondary school education in Pleasant Hill. He earned both a bachelor's degree and a master's at Western Illinois University and did additional graduate work at Southern Illinois University on both the Edwardsville and Carbondale campuses.

He is the son of the late Stephen and Nora Freeman and is married to the former Mary June Howdeshell. They have four children and four grandchildren. He also has two sisters, both of who live in Pleasant Hill; Mrs. Highbee Voshall and Mrs. James Greenstreet.
