Staunton Woman Decides Life Is Too Sad For Her

Mrs. Herbert Rhodes, 29 years old, commited suicide yesterday at Staunton (Macoupin Co) about noon by drinking about 3 ozs of carbolic acid. She procured the acid about 11 o'clock with money which she had borrowed for the purpose. Returning home she took the stuff and laid down on the bed where she was found dying by her son when he returned from school at noon. The son called in a neighbor Mrs. Robert George but it was too late to save her life. Mrs. Rhodes was a great-great grandaughter of Chief Justice John Marshall of the United States Supreme Court and has a sister living in Granite City.

From evidence given at the inquest to coroner Darius Carnes of Macoupin County yesterday afternoon, she drank the acid shortly after returning home, threw the bottle into her kitchen stove and composing herself on her bed, waited for death. The agony was too great and running to the door she called to Mrs. Robert George, a neighbor, not telling her however, what she had done. Mrs. George was busy with dinner preparation and did not respond. A sealed letter addressed to her mother-in-law at Griggsville IL was not opened at the inquest, and will be held for the addressee. The body will be taken to Griggsville today and buried there Friday. The husband could give no other reason for the suicide than ill health.
