LESLIE RUSSELL BENJAMIN After almost 3 years of anxious waiting definite information has been received regarding the fate of Leslie Russell Benjamin of Pleasant Hill, who was reported missing in action when the USS Houston was sunk in an engagement with the Japanese navy in the Java Straits on Feb. 28, 1942. The following report has been received by his brother, Loyd Benjamin of Rockport, from the US Navy Department:
January 2, 1946 ---- My Dear Mr. Benjamin:
Your brother, Leslie Russell Benjamin, 3/C Gunner's Mate, U.S.N., lost his life by enemy action on February 28, 1942. He was serving on the U.S.S. Houston when it was sunk during an engagement with an enemy ship in Soenda Straits, while enroute from Batavia, Java to Tjilatjap, Java. Since Russell Benjamin was first reported missing in action his brothers and sisters have waited and watched for favorable reports, hoping he had been interned in a Japanese prison camp or had been rescued by natives and was safe on some island in the Java Sea, and their hopes were given encouragement by reports of members of the Houston's crew being found in various places in the Pacific after the Japs surrendered, and relatives never fully conceded their hopes would not be realized until the message of Jan. 2nd. The Houston, a part of the remnant of the United State Navy, after the treacherous attack on Pearl Harbor, was sent to assist in holding the Japs back in their advance on US possessions in the Pacific and hold them from the west coast of our mainland. It was by the gallant offensive of the Houston, and our Pacific fleet, always outnumbered in every engagement, that the "buck toothed" heathens were driven back toward their homeland, finally afraid to come out onto the seas and then completely collapse under the rocking of 2 atomic bombs. The victory won over the enemy was won by the Houston and other ships that fought against big odds, and gave the Japs a final salute as they sank beneath the waters with guns blazing.
