ABNER DECKER
- Barry had an exciting trial before Esq. Ferris, growing out of the facts as detailed in last week's Adage as follows:
About ten o'clock on Saturday night last a young man named Ab Decker entered the house of one Warren Ward, who lives about three miles south of New Canton, and attempted to enter the bedroom of a young lady in the employ of Ward. Decker, who had retired for the night, told Decker to leave the house. Decker declared that he would not do it, when Ward got up and started for Decker, who was turning around, pulled off his coat preparatory to giving battle. Ward seized a gun barrel and dealt Decker a blow over the head which knocked him senseless, a condition in which he has remained ever since, and at last accounts. Tuesday night it was thought he would not live the night through. Later--Decker died on Thursday morning.
BERNADINE DEEMER
- 88, of Jacksonville, and formerly of Pearl, died Thursday, March 15, 2012, at the Passavant Memorial Area Hospital in Jacksonville.
She was born Oct.27, 1923, in Montezuma Township to Paul and Virginia Fulmer Wheeler. She married Glenn L. Deemer Dec. 10, 1941, in Mexico, Mo., and he preceded her in death in March 2002.
Bernadine was a bank teller for both the First National Bank and later the First Bank in Pittsfield. She was a member of the Pearl Christian Church in Pearl.
Bernadine is survived by her son, Lanny Deemer and her daughter-in-law, Joan of Jacksonville. She was preceded in death by her husband Glenn, and two sisters, Velma Katelinek and Jacqueline Gallaher.
Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 19, at the Greenpond Cemetery, Pearl with Bro. Don Crater officiating.Memorials are suggested to the Greenpond Christian Church, Pearl. JOHN DIX
- Griggsville, Nov. 23, 1880. Died on Thursday, the 18th inst, John Dix, aged 84 years. Deceased had been a resident of this place for nearly fifty years. He was a good citizen and respected by all.
DONALD DUNHAM
, 74 of Pittsfield , Il. , died Monday (6/15/10) at his home following an extended illness. Donald was born Feb.18,1936 near New Salem ,Il., a son of Glenn and Louise Gerard Dunham. He married Carlene Daniels Feb.20,1954 at the Methodist parsonage in New Salem.
Donald farmed the family farm raising grain and livestock for 30 years then drove for Gully Transportation of Quincy,Il. for 25 years. He retired due to ill health.
He attended the Assembly of God Church in Pittsfield , was a 1953 graduate of Griggsville High School , enjoyed gardening,raising flowers,woodworking and carpentry work and was proud of the log cabin he built in his backyard. He enjoyed dining out and attending country music shows,and attending church services.
Donald served on the Griggsville Board of Education, worked for a short time for the Soil and Water Conservation District, and was a representative for Bear Hybrid Seed Corn Co.
He is survived by his loving wife Carlene, 2 sons, Ronald (wife Tammy) Dunham and Todd (wife Laura ) Dunham both of Pittsfield , Il. , 3 daughters, Mrs. Diana (Kevin ) Dyer of Pittsfield, Mrs. Kathleen(Steve) Eveland of Centrailia, Mo. , and Deborah(Rick) Conrad of Pittsfield. 9 grandchildren and 3 great g.c.
Donald was preceded by a sister Mariam Dell and a brother Paul Dunham. Funeral services will be Friday at 2 p.m. at the Niebur Funeral Home with Rev. Quentin Beard officiating. Burial at Gray Cemetery near New Salem.
LOIS E. (PHILLIPS) DUNHAM
, age 88, of Pittsfield HealthCare Center in Pittsfield, Il. and formerly of Griggsville, Il. died Tuesday morning (August 21, 2007) at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, Il. She was born September 13, 1918 in Griggsville, Il. daughter of the late Charles A. and Hazel Dunniway Phillips. She married Preston "Pinky" Dunham on March 29, 1939 in Bowling Green, Mo. and he preceded her in death on September 21, 1982.
Surviving is a daughter, Debbie Allen and husband Rick of Griggsville, Il.; three sons, Gary Dunham and wife Verna of Macomb, Il., Ron "Rocket" Dunham of Griggsville, Il., Mike Dunham of Springfield, Il.; fifteen grandchildren; twenty-two great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; two sisters, Hazel Russell of Pittsfield, Il., and Alberta Shaw of Griggsville, Il.; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband; a son, Phillip Dunham; two sisters, Kathryn Butler, Billie Lewis; and a brother, Harvey Phillips.
She was a 1936 graduate of Griggsville High School in Griggsville, Il. Lois along with her husband Preston owned and operated the Dunham Café in Griggsville, Il. for several years. In later years, she worked at the Parkview Drive-In as well as Griggsville City Hall in Griggsville until her retirement. Lois loved to bowl and loved attending sporting events her children, and grandchildren played in. She was an avid St. Louis Cardinal fan. She was a member of the Griggsville Regular Baptist Church and the Griggsville American Legion Auxillary and a past member of Rebeccha Lodge.
Services were entrusted to Airsman-Hires Funeral Home of Griggsville, Illinois.
MAGGIE M. (ELLIS) PYLE DUNHAM
, was born in Chambersburg, Ill., February 27th, 1870, died at her home in Valley City, Ill., October 25th 1918 of influenza.
She was married to Charles Pyle on November 26, 1889, and to this union were born three children, earl, William and Gertrude. Earl pass away when a little child and Mr. Pyle died January 27th, 1911.
Mrs. Pyle was again married, December 1913, to Mr. Lee Dunham. She leaves to mourn her death, her husband, one son, William, and her daughter, Gertrude, two grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends.
She was a member of the M. E. church at Valley City and of the P. C. M. L. A.
A short service was held at the grave in the Griggsville cemetery, Sunday. October 27th, conducted by Rev. J. D. Roach.
The sympathy of the entirre community goes out to these friends who are so sadly bereaved.

MARIE (ASKEW) KING DUNHAM
, aged eighteen, a resident of New Salem, died at four o'clock this morning at St. Mary's hospital. Mrs. Dunham was married twine, the first time at the age of about twelve. Her first marriage was to Paul King and took place in Mina, Arkansas, with the ceremony performed by a justice of the peace. Two years ago she secured a divorce from King at Pittsfield. Complications is given as the cause of death. According to the best remembrances of her husband, Fred Dunham, he was married to her November 12, 1916. This wedding took place at Hannibal and was performed by a justice of the peace. Mrs. Dunham leaves a daughter, Darline King, aged about five years. Darline King lives at New Salem. Mrs. Dunham was born at New Salem, August 29, 1898, a point on which Mr. Dunham is fairly clear. Her residence in Arkansas was of about one year duration. Practically all her life except this one year was spent in New Salem. Mrs. Dunham's maiden name was Marie Askew. Her mother died in December, 1915. Her father died several years ago. Mrs. Dunham leaves a half-sister, Mrs. Roy Dunham, of New Salem, an uncle in New Salem, her husband and daughter.
MARJORIE EILEEN (LAIRD) DUNHAM
, 88, of Griggsville died Tuesday, July 22, 2008, at Pittsfield Manor in Pittsfield.
She was born February 17, 1920 in New Salem to the late Merrill and Laverne Moore Laird.
She married Joseph Marion Dunham July 14, 1940 in New London, Mo. and he preceded her in death Oct. 2, 2005.
Surviving is a daughter, Linda Brite and husband Robert of Monett, Mo.; a son, Larry Joseph Dunham and wife Barbara of Griggsville; grandchildren, Lisa Spencer and husband Shane of Perry, Lori Bradshaw and husband Matt of Pittsfield, Robbie Brite and wife Jody of Griggsville, Daryl Brite and wife Melody of Griggsville, and Michael Brite of Monett, Mo.; eight great-grandchildren; a sister, Dorothy Cory and husband Victor of Quincy; three brothers, Paul Laird and wife Georgia of Pine, Arizona, Donald Laird and wife Pat of Elgin, Il. and Vincent Laird and wife Kay of Galesburg; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and a sister, Helen Laird.
Mrs. Dunham was a graduate of Pittsfield High School. She was employed as a program assistant with Pike Co. Farm Service Agency in Pittsfield for 32 years before her retirement. Eileen was a member of the Griggsville United Methodist Church in Griggsville, where she was very active in the church and a member of the Dorcas Circle and the United Methodist Women at the church. She was also a member of Lady's Bridge Club, Pike Co. Dance Club, National Association of Retired Federal Employees and the Needlecraft Club through the church.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, July 25, at the Airsman-Hires Chapel in Griggsville. Burial will be in Griggsville Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at the chapel. PAUL W. DUNHAM
, 83, Pittsfield, died Sunday, Nov. 25, 2007, at his residence.
He was born Oct. 5, 1924, in New Salem, the son of Charles Glen and Helen Louise (Gerard) Dunham.
He married Ethel Virginia Hillman on Dec. 31, 1944, in Pittsfield. She preceded him in death Oct. 8, 2001.
He is survived by one daughter, Linda (Sonny) Kimmel, Victorville, Calif.; three sons, Gary (Cheryl) Dunham, Macomb, Daniel (Lynda Marie) Dunham, Columbia, Mo., and David (Jane) Dunham, Chatham; 12 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one brother, Donnie (Carlene) Dunham, Pittsfield; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife and his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Charles in infancy, and one sister, Miriam Dell.
He was in the last graduating class in New Salem High School, graduating in 1942. He never missed a day of school in 18 years. He farmed in New Salem all his life, retiring in 1986. He was also a past mayor of New Salem and at one time served on the school board for Pittsfield Community District 10.
He was a member of the Pittsfield Church of Christ where he hosted the Life Group for many years. He was also a member of the Pike County Farm Bureau. He took pride in giving blood when he was able and was a member of the "Gallon Club" many times. He also loved to bowl.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m., Friday, Nov. 30, 2007, at Airsman-Hires Funeral Home, Pittsfield.
Burial will be in Pittsfield West Cemetery
REGINALD KENT DUNHAM
, 71, of South Jacksonville, died Thursday, Sept. 3, 2009, at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.
He was born Jan. 10, 1938, in Quincy, the son of N.W. and Edna Newman Dunham. He married Linda Watson Dec. 28, 1959, in Pittsfield and she survives.
He is also survived by three sons and one daughter, Reginald Khoy Dunham of Springfield, Roger Kent (wife, Cathy) Dunham of Jacksonville, Lee Anne Dunham (husband, Kenny Woodlief) of Lawrence, Kan. and John Marshall Dunham of DeQuincy, La.; two grandchildren, Amanda and Nathan Dunham; and one great-grandson, Dakota Kline, all of Jacksonville. He was preceded in death by one sister, Linda Anne Dunham.
Mr. Dunham was a 1956 graduate of Pittsfield High School, and then graduated from Colorado College in Colorado Springs, Co, in 1960. He taught at Winchester High School for 33 years, where he coached football, boys track and girls track. He had also served as a coach for MacMurray College football and the Salem Lutheran track team. Mr. Dunham was a member of the Pittsfield Masonic Lodge, Ducks Unlimited, and had served as Vice-President and President of International Carnival Glass Association. He loved duck hunting, and was proud to have introduced his grandson to the sport. He and his wife owned and operated Dunham's Jewelry & Antiques for nine years. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.
Funeral services were held 10 a.m. Tuesday at Buchanan & Cody Funeral Home in Jacksonville, with burial at Oakwood Cemetery in Pittsfield.
ROBERT ERVIN DUNHAM
, 85, died peacefully after a short battle with lung cancer July 2, 2010, in Corinth, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 63 years Betty, Jane Lawrence Dunham who died Aug. 14, 2009. Bob was born Feb. 23, 1925, in Pittsfield, to Clarence and Lois Dunham. He was a proud Marine serving a tour of duty in the South Pacific during World War II.
Following his service to the country, Bob attended Bradley University in i Peoria, Illinois and the University of Illinois where he graduated with a degree in engineering in 1948. While at Bradley, he met and married Betty Jane Lawrence in 1946. His combination of technical engineering skills and his outgoing personality served him well as he built a successful career in sales of technical equipment eventually serving as National Sales Manager for Master Chemical Company in Perrysburg, Ohio until moving to Texas.
Bob and Betty moved to Flower Mound, Texas in 1977 where they loved to golf and garden. Bob is survived by his children, Shelley Dunham (Ray Dryden-husband) of Nashville, Tenn., Debra Dunham of Corinth, Texas and Curt Dunham (Peggy Fiandaca-wife) of Fountain Hills, Arizona and close family friends Mary Forseth of Corinth and Barbara Smith of Lewisville, Texas.
JUANITA M. (JONES) DURBIN
, 68, of Liberty died at 7:12 p.m. Mon. (March 14, 1988) in Blessing Hospital in Quincy. Mrs. Durbin was born in Griggsville, a daughter of Clyde and Lucille K. Goings Jones. She married Dwight W. Durbin. He died Dec. 2, 1982. Mrs. Durbin was a meal site coordinator for Meals Plus for Seniors. She was of the Methodist faith. Survivors include three sons, Robert W. Durbin of Irving, Texas; Jerry L. Durbin of Quincy, and Jackie D. Durbin of Maywood, Mo.; six daughters, Mrs. Roy (Karen K.) Druffel, Mrs. Danna E. Marshall and Teresa S. Durbin, all of Quincy, Katherine M. Carroll, and Mrs. John (Cheryl L.) Hoener, both of Liberty, and Mrs. Richard (Patricia A.) Heinen of Springfield; five brothers, Kenneth Jones of Hendersonville, Tenn., Jack Jones of Pittsfield, Gene, Donald and Bill Jones, all of Quincy; two sisters, Mrs. Raymond (Esther) Hastings of Barrington, Kan., and Mrs. Jack (Nina) Powell of Warren, Mo.; 25 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Mrs. Durbin also was preceded in death by her parents, a brother and a sister. Services were conducted...Thursday in Duker and Haugh Funeral Home in Liberty by the Rev. Peter Andersen. Burial was in Xander Cemetery near Liberty. Memorials may be made to the Liberty American Legion.
