FINLEY HAYS - By the death of Finley Hays early last Thursday morning (Nov. 12) Barry lost her most aged citizen. Had Mr. Hays lived until early in the new year he would have reached his ninety-ninth birthday. He passed away at the home of his son, Ed. on the south side of the park...after a brief illness, brought short by a fall he sustained ten days prior to his death. When he attempted to open the door leading from his room into the hallway he fell backward on the floor, injuring his back, but fracturing no bones. Mr. Hays was but to bed but due to his advanced age and frail condition his physical decline was rapid. Up until the time he fell, on nice days, Mr. Hays seldom missed a day walking the few blocks from his son's home to the business district, where he enjoyed meeting and visiting his friends. His hearing was poor but his eyesight was keen for a man of his great age. Mr. Hays was never ill and took care of himself until almost the very last day of his life. Finley Hays, son of James and Elizabeth Hays, was born in Franklin county, Ohio, January 21, 1838. In 1855 he was married to Mary Peterson and to this union six sons were born, one dying in infancy. The five surviving sons are Frank, Nathan and Ed of Barry; Marion, of Rock Island; Emmett of Quincy. Mrs. Hays passed away in September 1918, at the age of 88 years. There are twenty-one grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. Mr. Hays came to Illinois with his parents in October 1846, when this part of the country was a wilderness. He lived in the vicinity of New Salem, but the greater part of his life was spent in Barry. Funeral services were held from the Hufnagel Funeral Home Saturday afternoon, November 14, with Rev. J. A. Johnson of the Barry Methodist church officiating. A men's trio composed of Fred Davis, George Wike, and Frank Lawson sang three appropriate songs. Interment was in the Barry cemetery.
