CLYDE W. JACOBS
, 76, of New Canton, died Nov. 27, 2002 in Hannibal Regional Hospital in Hannibal, MO. He was born Aug. 21, 1926 in Blanco, TX to Lee and Eunice (Kiser) Jacobs. He married Dorothy J. Thomas July 23, 1949 in Pittsfield. She survives in New Canton. Other survivors are 1 son, Warren Lee Jacobs (wife Darlene) of Pittsfield; 3 daughters, Mrs. Jeff (Cathy) Tunget of rural New Canton, Mrs. Robert (Janet) Yelliott of rural Pittsfield and Mrs. John (Karen) Grawe of Madison, AL; 4 grandsons, David Jacobs of rural Barry, Jason Tunget of El Dara, Paul Tunget and Justin Tunget, both of New Canton; 5 grandchildren, Kayla Tunget of rural New Canton, Beth Davis of Nebo, Katrina Grawe, Rebecca Grawe and Jennifer Grawe all of Madison, AL; and 5 great-grandchildren, Logan Tunget of Quincy, Ryan Tunget of El Dara, Tyler Jacobs of Nebo, Marissa Grawe of Madison, AL and Blake Tunget of Quincy. He was preceded in death by 4 brothers and 2 sisters. Mr. Jacobs retired from the U.S. Army and was a World War II and Korean veteran. He also served in the Dominican Republic. After retiring from the Army, he took up farming and enjoyed hunting and fishing. Funeral services were held Sunday, Dec. 1, at Kirgan Funeral Home in Barry. Burial was in the Samuel Taylor Cemetery in Rockport.
DOROTHY J. JACOBS
, 77, of New Canton died Monday, July 6, 2009, in her home.
She was born Nov.6, 1931, in Pleasant Hill, Ill., to Berlyn and Elzona (Windmiller) Thomas. They preceded her in death.
She married Clyde W. Jacobs July 23, 1949, in Pittsfield. He preceded her in death Nov.27, 2002.
She is survived by one son, Warren Lee Jacobs and his wife, Darlene, of New Canton; and three daughters, Mrs. Cathy Tunget and her husband Jeff, of New Canton; Mrs. Janet Yelliott and her husband Robert, of Pittsfield and Mrs. Karen Grawe and her husband John, of El Dara; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Berlyn Thomas.
Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. Thursday, July 9, at the Kirgan Funeral Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, July 10, at the Kirgan Funeral Home in Barry.
Burial will be in Samuel Taylor Cemetery, Rockport.
PAUL JACOBS
, 95, of rural Pittsfield, died Wednesday Nov. 26, 2008, at Liberty Village in Pittsfield.
Born Aug. 1, 1913 near Loami, he was a son of John and Olie Workman Jacobs. He married Juanita Hartman Oct. 23,1943 in Springfield and she survives.
In his early years he operated his own trucking business and moved to Pike County and operated the KeLa Su Marina in Florence. Paul loved woodworking, gardening hunting and he took great pride in being able to put in a hard days work. He was a member of the National Rifle Assn. and Pike County Fami Bureau.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Juanita, a son Mike, wife Audrey, Jacobs; a daughter, Mrs. Sharon, husband Donald, Clarkson, both of Pittsfield; a sister, Mrs. Grace Lindley of Virden; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded by a son, Paul Kendle Jacobs Jr., a son in infancy John Neal Jacobs; two brothers, Dugan and Jim Jacobs; and two sisters, Dorothy and Edrie.
Funeral services were Monday at 11 a.m. at the Niebur Funeral Home in Pittsfield with Rev. John Ruzich officiating. Burial was at Sulfur Springs Cemetery in Loami. Visitation was Sunday at Niebur Funeral Home from 4 p.m. till 7 p.m. Memorials are to Samaritan Purse or Sulfur Springs Cemetery. Condolences to the family may be sent to infogneiburfh.com. PAUL V. JAMES
, 83, of Pittsfield, died Sunday, Oct. 21, 2001 in the emergency room at Illini Community Hospital in Pittsfield.
Born June 17, 1917 in Martinsburg Township near Pittsfield, he was the son of Joseph Andrew and Charlotte (Shadel) James.
Mr. James served seven years before and during World War II in the Army and following discharge, served in the Army Reserves. He was a grain/livestock farmer on the family farm. He enjoyed working the family farm, plowing the fields and enjoyed quail hunting.
Survivors include brothers George and Elmo James of Pittsfield, and Joe James of Phoeniz, Ariz.; sister Geneva Doane of Barry; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Lyndle James, and sister, Leta James. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Oct. 25, at 2 p.m. at the Niebur Funeral Home in Pittsfield. Visitation will be at Niebur Funeral Home after 4 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 24, with family meeting friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Burial will be at the Goodin Cemetery in Pittsfield. Memorials may be made to the Goodin Cemetery.
GEORGE JAMES
, 96, of Pittsfield, died Saturday, May 28, 2011, at Illini Community Hospital, Pittsfield. He was born Aug. 22, 1914 in Martinsburg Township in Pike County, to Joe and Charlotte Schadel James. He never married.
George was a farmer of grain and livestock on the farm where he was born. He enjoyed going to the Kitchen Feed Store every morning. His home was the Sunday morning gathering place with friends where many fish fries were enjoyed. He enjoyed gardening, his livestock, his dogs, coon hunting, beekeeping, listening to the Derry Brownfield radio show, and raising his Angus cattle.
George is survived by several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews, and great great nieces and great-great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Lyndle, Paul, Joe, and Elmo and one sister, Geneva Doanne. Funeral services will be held today, Wednesday, June 1, at 11 a.m. at the Niebur Funeral Home, Pittsfield, with Rev. Tom Wilbur officiating. Burial will be at the Goodin Cemetery, Pittsfield. A visitation will be held from 9 until 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 1, at the Niebur Funeral Home, Pittsfield. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Goodin Cemetery, Pittsfield. JOE JAMES
, passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 11, 2010 at his home in Phoenix, AZ. Joe was born on December 21, 1919, in Pittsfield IL, the son of Joseph James Sr. and Charlotte Shadell James. He was married to Fern Murphy from Detroit IL (deceased). He came to Arizona with Fern in 1948 after serving in WW11 with the United States Marine Corp.
Joe an Fern established the Maple House Furniture Store, where he worked 7 days a week until his death. He enjoyed a wonderful life.
Joe is survived by his 4 sons, 2 Grandchildren, 5 Great Grandchildren and his brother George James of Pittsfield. Services were held November 16 in Phoenix, AZ
MRS. W.B. JAMES
, a venerable lady, and an old settler of Pike county, a dutiful wife, and a christian neighbor, died at her home, near Prairie Mound last Saturday evening at about 80 years of age. She leaves a large circle of friends and relatives to mourn her loss. We extend our sympathy to her bereaved husband now bowed down with grief and age.
ROBERT L. JANES
, 64, of Griggsville, Illinois died Monday, March 7, 2011, at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, Illinois. He was born on November 4, 1946 in Pittsfield, Illinois, to Carl L. and Frances W. Berry Janes. His first marriage was to Sandy Conkright on August 1, 1969, he then married Carolyn K. Gratton on June 12, 1998, in Griggsville, Illinois, and she survives.
Robert was a mechanic and detailer for Benson Ford Motor Company, Pittsfield, IL, for over 25 years. He also worked sealing driveways. He enjoyed buying, selling, and working on old cars. He also enjoyed his grandchildren and spending time with them as well as visiting with family and friends.
Robert is survived by his wife, Carolyn; two sons, Scott (Cathy) Janes and Kevin Janes both of Nebo, IL; two step-daughters, Cindy Jones (Companion, Anthony Reveal) and Christina Jones both of Griggsville, IL, two sisters, Jeanie Shaw of Nebo, IL, and Bonnie Sue Janes of Pittsfield, IL, along with six grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.
Funeral Services will be held on Friday, March 11, 2011, at 2:00 P. M. at the Niebur Funeral Home, Pittsfield, Illinois, with Bro. Donald Bricker officiating. Burial will be at the Oakwood Cemetery, Pittsfield, IL. A visitation will be held on Friday, March 11, 2011 prior to the services from noon until 2 P.M.at the Niebur Funeral Home, Pittsfield, IL.
GEORGE HERBERT JEFFERS
, son of Isaac and Charlotte Noe Jeffers, was born Nov. 11, 1871 near Baylis, and passed away very suddenly at his home Friday morning, March 31, 1950 at the age of 78 years 4 months and 20 days. He was one of a family of ten children, five of whom preceded him in death. On Dec. 17, 1896 he was united in marriage to Miss Jane Winterbotham. They went to housekeeping on a farm north of Baylis. He retired from the farming and moved to town Dec. 25, 1919. He spent his entire life in this community. His wife preceded him n death August 18, 1933. Two sons were born to this union, Sherman Elmo who was a veteran of WW I an dpassed away at Pittsburg KS Dec. 14, 1918 and Harold Leslie of Baylis who survives. He is also survived by ne grandson, Lt. Asabel H. Jeffers of Camp Gordon GA, a daughter-in-law, two brothers and two sisters, Newton and Mary of Denver Colo., Mrs. Myrtle Peterson of Camdenton MO and Lewis of Sacramento CA, several nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. Mr. Jeffers was a loving father, a kind neighbor and will be greatly missed by all.
JAMES JEFFERS
, aged 74 years, died at the state hospital at Jacksonville on Monday, December 9. He was well known in Baylis and vicinity, where for years he was a singing teacher. The funeral will be held at the U. B. church at Baylis on Thursday afternoon...conducted by Rev. Rigney and the Masonic order.
JANE "JENNIE" E. (WINTERBOTHAM) JEFFERS
, of Baylis, wife of George Jeffers, died Friday morning in a Quincy hospital following an operation for appendicitis performed just a few days before. Mrs. Jeffers had been in poor health for several years but her condition was not serious until she was stricken with appendicitis. Jane E. daughter of Charles and Jane Winterbotham, was born near Baylis, Illinois, on March 7, 1876, and at the time of her death was 57 years, 5 months and 11 days. She was the youngest of three children, Belle and Rachel, both have preceded her in death. She was married to George H. Jeffers on December 17, 1896 and to this union two sons were born. Sherman Elmo who passed away on December 14, 1918. She is survived by her husband and one son, Harold Leslie and wife and one grandson, Asabel of New Salem, Ill., and a foster brother Harry Calvert of Oregon City, Ore. Besides these she leaves many relatives and friends who will miss her cheery smile and sunny disposition. In her early life she united with the United Brethern church, later moved her membership to the M.E. church of Baylis, of which she remained a faithful member. She was also a Pasat Noble Grand of Baylis Rebekah lodge. The funeral services were held from the Baylis M.E. Church at 2:30 Sunday afternoon. August 20, in charge of Rev. O.M. McCumber a former pastor of the Baylis church and a close friend of the family. The members of the Baylis Rebekah lodge attended the services in a body. Interment was made in the Baylis cemetery.
RUBY (BELFORD) JEFFERS
, 92, of Pittsfield and formerly of Baylis, died Tuesday July 20, 1993, at Clarkston County Nursing Home in Pittsfield. Born Dec. 5, 1900 in Perry, she was a daughter of the late Robert and Mima Elder Belford. She married Leslie Jeffers Feb. 3, 1924 in Pittsfield. He died Jan.23, 1960. Surviving are three grandchildren, Mrs. Stephen J. (Candace) Smith of Savannah GA, and Bradley H. and Christopher J. Jeffers both of Savannah GA; and one great-granddaughter Leigh Anne Smith of Savannah, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, one son, Asahel H. Jeffers, three brothers and six sisters. Mrs. Jeffers was a 1918 graduate of Perry High School and was employed as a cook for the school in Baylis from 1950 to 1971. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and Rebakah Lodge and of the Baylis United Methodist Church. Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Friday at Baylis Cemetery. Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Pittsfield handled arrangements. Memorials may be made to the Baylis United Methodist Church.
JAMES R. JEFFRIES
, 47, of Princeville died Wednesday, April 22, 2009 at OSF St. Francis Medical Center.
He was born August 23, 1961 in Pittsfield, the son of Gary D. and Jacqualin A. (Doyle) Barker. He married Dawn M. Mulvaney June 14, 2003 in Groveland.
Surviving are his wife, parents and children; Joshua R. Jeffries of Chillicothe, Adam K. Jeffries of Bloomington, Jacob D. Jeffries of Carbondale and Michaela J. Jeffries of Princeville. Also surviving are four brothers, Tim (Mary) Jeffries of Quincy, John Jeffries of E. Peoria, Justin (Maggie) Barker of Perry and J.D. (Melissa) Barker of Clayton, N.C.
He graduated Summa Cum Laude from Bradley University with his Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering in 1984. He worked for Caterpillar as a CPS Deployment Manager in the Electric Power Division, where he just celebrated his 25th anniversary.
Jim lived for spending time with his family, especially with his wife and children. He loved spending time at home as well as outdoors on his property. -- Riding 4-wheelers and 4-wheeling in his trucks, building bonfires, playing catch, feeding the turtles and catfish in his pond, and watching TV with his family and Fred kitty-cat. He was involved and dedicated with Habitat for Humanity and the Boy Scouts of America. Jim was a beloved husband and father. He will be dearly missed by many family and friends.
Funeral service were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 28 at Weber-Hurd Funeral Home. The Rev. Bill Adams officiated. Burial and graveside services were held at 4 p.m. at the Pittsfield Cemetery, Pittsfield. Visitation was Monday, 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home
MARY (LEMERY) JEFFRIES
, daughter of Alexander and Susan Lemery, was born in New Hope, Lincoln county, Mo., April 30, 1856, and died at the home of her son, James A. Jeffries, near Griggsville, Ill., on her 75th birthday.
On November 4, 1873, she was united in marriage with William H. Jeffries, at New Hope, Mo. Six children were born to this union, three of whom, Cora, Clarence and Isa May, are deceased, and three of whom survive: Mrs. Leona Ham of Valley City, Ill.; Joseph of Pittsburg, Penn., and James A., of Griggsville, Ill. Her husband died about five years ago. She is also survived by seventeen grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
Most of her married life has been lived in Illinois. During the last fourteen years she has lived at Maysville, where they had purchased a home in which they planned to spend their last years on earth.
She had for many years been a loyal member of the Christian church, uniting later with the U. B. church at Maysville, Ill. She was of a loving, patient disposition and had ministered to many in their hours of sickness and pain.
She had recently suffered five strokes of paralysis, the last one coming Monday, April 27, from which she gradually relapsed into a state of coma, the end coming on Thursday, April 30.
The funeral services were heal from the U. B. church in Maysville Ill., Saturday, May 2, at 2 p. m, and interment made in Griggsville cemetery, the Rev. Oscar F. Jones, pastor of the Griggsville M.E. church, officiating.
BINGHAM JELLISON
, Died in Pittsfield, Bingham Jellison, one of the oldest citizens of Pike Co. departed from this life on Wednesday afternoon April 13, 1885. His funeral services in connection with his burial were conducted by Elder Niles Kinne of Barry, assisted by Rev. W. W. Rose of the Congregational church, and Rev. Wm. H. Shank of the Baptist Church. Father Jellison was born Jan. 24, 1805 in Brighton Summerset Co. Maine. He was the first white child born in that county. On April the 15th 1826 he was married to Mary Wiman who still lives to mourn her loss. In the fall of 1844, he and his wife came to Illinois and settled in Pike county, here they have lived ever since. All who have known Bingham Jellison, know him to be an honest upright man. This had won to him the highest respect as a citizen....He was a member of the Baptist church and much loved by all....Let us be ready to meet him in the better land. W.H.S.
