BESSIE BRIGGS (BICKERDIKE) LARGE , , the eight child of Mr. and Mrs. James Bickerdike, was born on the 10th day August, 1876, at the old homestead three miles southeast of Griggsville, Ill. She attended the common school at Brush College and afterwards graduated from Griggsville high school in 1894. She then engaged in teaching for a few years and her efforts were crowned with success. The many friends she acquired in her school days will always have pleasant memories of the bright and cheerful girl who made school life the brighter for her having been in it. She was married to Oscar S. Large of Springfield, I11., October 26, 1899, at which place they made their home and have since resided. Three children blessed this union, a little son who died in infancy, two daughters, Grace Elizabeth and Bessie Martha Rosalind, who are now aged about four and two years respectfully. Their home was indeed a truly happy one, and was always open to their friends who have enjoyed many a pleasant hour because of the exceptional hospitality of these generous young people. Mrs. Large gave her heart to God in early childhood and united with the Bethel church when a little past seven years of age, under the pastorate of Rev. Weems. After marriage she moved her membership to the Kumler M. E. church at Springfield where she remained a member until her translation. She was a charter member of the Violet Missionary society of the Bethel church and took an active interest in its welfare. She was a devoted wife, a tender and loving mother. In saying that truly of her it is one of the most beautiful tributes that can be paid a noble woman. She was very cheerful and optimistic in temperament and was always happy when able to make some life brighter and better. In consequence of her loving heart and sunny disposition she attracted a wide circle of friends who were much devoted to her and who now weep with the relatives at her seemingly untimely end. About five weeks ago she was brought to her old home in hope of benefitting her health which had been failing for some time, but all that loving friends and medical attention could do did not avail, and she passed away at 1:20 p. m. April 28. During her illness she talked much about death. She was anxious to live for the sake of tier family and friends, but when the end approached the Lord gave her a blessed victory and she said repeatedly, "0, death, where is thy sting?" Besides her husband and children, she leaves two brothers, Edward and Robert, three sisters, Mrs. Richard Elliott, and Misses Emma and Daisy, and mother, the father and three children having preceded her to the better land. Funeral services were held at Bethel Sunday afternoon, conducted by Revs. Cusic and Armentrout, after which she was laid to rest in the cemetery adjoining the church.
