THOMAS F. NAPIER - one of Griggsville's oldest citizens, died Saturday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Mamie Evans in St. Louis. He had been in that city for the past several years. The body was brought back to Griggsville Sunday, and funeral services were held...Monday afternoon at the Skinner Funeral Home. Rev. J. K. Putt officiated, and burial was in the Griggsville cemetery. Mr. Napier was a broom-maker by trade. He started working at that business for Emsley Williams when only 17 years of age. His first work was sorting the stock. He later developed into an expert broom-maker, being employed by Mr. Williams for 25 years, after which he went into business for himself. For many years he conducted a profitable business. He raised most of the broom corn he used excepting when there was a crop failure or demand for brooms used up his supply. He had not been active in this work for several years, but in some brooms he turned out at the age of 87, the workmanship was up to its usual high standards. On October 31, 1877, Mr. Napier was married to Miss Sarah Caroline Morgan, who was born in Scott county, Illinois, December 12, 1857, she having come to Pike county with her parents, John and Anna West Morgan, when quite young. To this union were born five children, one of whom, passed away in January, 1920. The surviving children are John F. Napier of Griggsville, Nelson Napier, Springfield, Ill., Will C. Napier, St. Louis, Mo., and Mrs. Ernest Evans, St. Louis. Mr. Napier also has two grandchildren, Wesley Stead of Griggsville and Barbara Joan Napier, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Napier. Mr. and Mrs. Napier moved in the fall of 1881 to their home on Quincy avenue in the east part of Griggsville. Mrs. Napier passed away at the home of her son, Will, in St. Louis, December 2, 1933, after an extended illness. Since her death Mr. Napier has been living alternately in the homes of his children. Mr. Napier was born in Griggsville, April 2, 1849 and until three or four years ago enjoyed remarkably good health. He spent practically all of his life in that city, where he was held in highest esteem by all who knew him.

JULIA ALICE (BROWN) NEWMAN daughter of H. R. and E. J. Brown, was born in Griggsville, Ill., Nov. 8, 1856, and died in Griggsville, Sept. 12, 1896. She was married to Charles B. Newman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Newman, Sept. 20, 1876. Of this union six children were born, three sons and three daughters. There are now left to mourn her loss a kind, loving husband, three sons and two daughters; one daughter, a babe one year old, having preceded her to that land where there is no pain, no sin, no sorrow. She united with the Baptist church in Griggsville in the year 1874 under the ministration of the Rev. Stetson, being one of the first received into membership of the new church dedicated that year. After years of intense suffering she succumbed to the fatal hand of disease, all of which she bore with Christian fortitude, and being told that the end was drawing near, she said: "My only regrets are leaving my husband and children." And as she bade them a last farewell it left an impression upon the minds of those who witnessed it that will never be erased. The blow falls heavy on the aged parents, to whom she was a great comfort in their declining years, and as she greeted them with a smile of recognition they could but turn sadly away, feeling that all was well and that 0 grave where now is thy victory. Alice was a woman of strong character and convictions, full of life and energy far beyond her strength. Her whole ambition was the advancement of her husband and children. She remembered a kindness, never forgot a friend, ready to help the sick and needy and aid the distressed. The floral offerings were many and beautiful, and after a very impressive service at the Baptist church by the Rev. T. C. Coffey of Pittsfield, the remains of Allie were tenderly laid to rest in the beautiful cemetery at Griggsville. The bereaved family have the sympathy of the entire community in their sad bereavement. May the hand of Him who shall wipe away all tears from all eyes wipe their cheeks with its softest tenderness.
