JUANITA (DENNIS) SARVER
, age 91, of Wright City Mo. and formerly of Pike County, Il. went to be with her Lord on July 16, 2010 in Wright City, Missouri. The former Juanita Dennis was born in Feb. 16, 1919 in Waverly, Illinois daughter of the late Mark and Inez Matthew Dennis. She married George B. Sarver on July 14, 1935 in Winchester, Il. and he preceded her in death on June 22, 1998. Surviving are five children,, Stephen Sarver and wife LaVonne of Wright City, Mo., Tamitha Thomas and husband Bill of Sublette, Kans., Rebecca Sarver Snider of Wright City, Mark Sarver and wife Rhonda of Carpenterville, Il., and Janice E. Sarver of Wright City; 12 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren; one sister Vivian Emrick of Valley City, Il. and many much loved nieces and nephews, and dear friends around the world. She was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters, four brothers, her beloved husband, and her son Jackie Juanita was a voracious reader, avid gardener, and fine cook. She loved people and was a trusted friend and confidant. But most of all, she loved her family and her Lord. She was a faithful member of the Wright City Church of the Nazarene, where she especially enjoyed her Sunday School class. She adored the people of her church who in turn adored her. Juanita was a compassionate and generous woman whose great desire was to spread the gospel and help others. Consequently, the family asks that memorials go to Nazarene Missions International and the Heartland Memorial Fund. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday (July 20, 2010) at the Airsman-Hires Chapel in Griggsville Il. Burial will be in Griggsville Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, July 19, 2010, at the Airsman-Hires Funeral Chapel in Griggsville, Illinois . ANNETTA SAUGIER
, 82, of Poway, Calif, formerly of Perry, New Salem, and Quincy, died Monday, Sept. 28, 2009, in her home in Poway.
She was born, March 8, 1927, in Perry, the oldest of four children of the late Hugh Brown and Anna Ruth Townley Kerr of New Salem. She married Joseph Saugier Aug. 12, 1951. in the home of her parents in New Salem.
Annetta was raised in New Salem, graduated from New Salem Grade School in 1941 and from Pittsfield High School in 1945. She also attended Illinois College in Jacksonville, graduating in 1949 with a major in journalism. She was the first college graduate
in her family. Alter graduating from college, she worked at the Quincy , Herald-Whig newspaper for approximately two years from 1949-1952 as a journalist. Following the birth of their first child, Annetta worked as a
homemaker. Annetta's brother, Kent Kerr, has this to say about his sister Annetta and Joe's caring for our mother for four years from 1994 through 1998 speaks volumes about Annetta and Joe's noble, unselfish, and magnanimous spirit.
Survivors include her husband, Joseph; four children, Joseph Hugh Saugier and his wife, Dianne, Richard Kent Saugier and his wife, Evelyn, Jill Summer Saugier Amend and her husband, David, and Rhett Townley Saugier

Richard, and William Kent Kerr and his wife, Evelyn. She was preceded in death by her mother, Anna Ruth Townley Kerr and her father, Hugh Brown Ken, both of New Salem. BARBARA LEE SCHMIDT
, 84, of Quincy, formerly of Barry, died Wednesday, April 7, 2010, in Blessing Hospital, Quincy.
She was born Oct. 11, 1925, on the family farm northwest of Barry, to Glen & Clara (Tittsworth) Schmidt. They preceded her in death. She never married.
She is survived by one sister, Carrie Schmalshof Askew and one brother, John (Virginia) Schmidt, both of Quincy; one very special niece, Debra (Lee) Muntz, of Fairfield, Iowa, as well as several other nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Gerald and Frank Schmidt.
Barbara graduated from Guss Country School, Barry High School, the DeVry Technical Institute in Chicago and the Quincy School of Practical Nursing.
She had been employed at Eli Walker International Shoe Company, Monroe Chemical, Quincy Speaker, and retired in 1988 from Blessing Hospital after 17 years employment. Her favorite place in Blessing was the Pediatrics Department where she worked with and met many wonderful people. From 1989 to 2005 she was caregive for 2 wonderful children, Randy and Laura. She was a member of Bible Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School in the toddler and beginner classes, She was also a member of the 10 year plus club at Blessings AARP and had been a member of R.S.V.P.
She liked to spend time with faniily and friends and enjoyed experimenting with cooking. She liked to write poems and songs and sang her songs in several area churches in Illinois and Missouri. She had to sing with no accompaniment because she didn't know music • and couldn't write the notes down. She said that no one knew the tunes but herself and the good Lord. She liked to sing and she liked to laugh. She was thankful for her memories of her parents and her late brothers, Gerald and Frank. One of her favorite phrases was "Praise the Lord". She loved the Lord and the Lord has called her home.
Visitation was held from 3-5 p.m. Sunday, April 11, at the Kirgan Funeral Home in Barry. Graveside services were held at 11 am. Monday, April 12, at Park Lawn Cemetery, Barry. Burial was in Park Lawn Cemetery, Barry. Memorials are suggested to the Salvation Army or the Bible Baptist Church
RAYMOND JEROME SCHUMANN
, 83, of Hull, Illinois died at 5:15 PM Saturday, June 12, 2010 at Hannibal Regional Hospital in Hannibal. Funeral Services will be at 10:00 AM Thursday, June 17, at Hull United Methodist Church in Hull, Illinois. Burial with Full Military Rites will be at Kinderhook Cemetery in Kinderhook, Illinois. The James O'Donnell Funeral Home in Hannibal is in charge of arrangements. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Hull United Methodist Church in Hull, Illinois.
Mr. Schumann was born September 13, 1926, in Kampsville, Illinois to Roy Leo and Mary Nord Schumann. He was married to Jo Ellen Nichols on June 20, 1959 in Burkburnett, Texas. She survives.
Other survivors include 3 children, Sherry Wei (Manny) of Effingham, Illinois, Jo Gregg (Ed) of Hannibal, MO, Steve Schumann of Quincy, IL, 1 Sister, Elizabeth Banghart (Bob), 3 Grandchildren, Edward Gregg, Aimee Wei and Ryan Wei, 1 Nephew, Mike Banghart,1 Niece, Kate Bauers (Dennis). He is preceded in death by his parents and 2 sisters; Lauretta Kaffer and Dorothy Schumann.
Mr. Schumann was a U S Army Veteran serving during World War II. He was a teacher and a coach at West Pike School in Kinderhook, Illinois for over 30 years. Mr. Schumann was a standout basketball player at Hannibal LaGrange Junior College and Midwestern State University in Witchita Falls, TX. He was inducted into the National Junior College Hall of Fame for Basketball and he still holds many collegiate records. After his education Ray continued to play sports on various independent teams throughout the area. He continued to play until the age of 78, competing in the Senior Olympics and in Senior Softball. Ray also loved the outdoors, he was an avid fisherman and mushroom hunter. He was a member of the Hull United Methodist Church.

RAMON N. SHAVER
, 82, of Jacksonville, IL died Wednesday, November 25, 2009 at his home.
He was born April 16, 1927 in Griggsville, IL; the son of Simion N. and Freda Elizabeth Beedle Shaver. He married Annette Morgan on September 22, 1951 in Quincy, IL and she survives.
He is also survived by a son, Kent Shaver (wife, Theresa) of Mt. Sterling; a daughter, Sherri Gregory (husband, Dave) of Concord; five grandchildren, Brianne Shaver, Ashley Zimmerman, Danielle Shaver, Justin Maher, and Vanessa Maher; four step grandchildren, Chris, Brock, Shaye and Josh Gregory; two great grandchildren; and six step great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Karma Jensen; and a niece, Christine Shaffer.
Mr. Shaver attended Griggsville High School and served with the US Army during the Korean War. He worked as a plumber and carpenter in the Griggsville area prior to moving to Jacksonville in the 1970’s. He was employed in the maintenance department at MacMurray College and more recently was an antiques dealer. He was a member of the Carnival Glass Association and the Antique Tool Association.
At his request, cremation rites have been accorded. Memorial services will be held 1:30 PM Saturday at Griggsville Cemetery in Griggsville with the Rev. David Gregory officiating. There will be no visitation. Memorial gifts are suggested to a charity of the donor’s choice. The Buchanan & Cody Funeral Home and Crematory in Jacksonville is in charge of the arrangements.
MARION SHEHAN
, son of Milton and Martha (Hooper) Shehan, was born at New Salem on Dec. 16, 1858, and died Dec. 17, at the age of 61 years, 11 months and 1 day. He was united in marriage to Miss Lucinda Lowe of Barry at Palmyra, Mo., in the year 1887. To this union were born two daughters, Mrs. Orpha Hoskins of Barry and Mrs. Bertha Campbell of Plainville. Mr. Shehan united with the Christian church at Barry under the leadership of Morgan Morgans in 1895. Besides his two daughters he leaves three sisters and two brothers: Mrs. Laura White of Quincy, Mrs. Havens of New Canton and Mrs. Robert Stinson of Sidney, Mont.; Thomas of Dutton and Monroe of Hannibal. Funeral services were held on Saturday, Dec. 20 and interment was made at Pleasant Grove Cemetery.
MARTHA ANN (HOOPER) SHEHAN
, was born in Pike county, Ill., Feb. 21, 1837. She died at Barry, Ill., Feb. 9, 1896. She was therefore 58 years, 11 months and 19 days old. She was married to Milton Shehan in 1855. To this marriage were born twelve children, five of whom, together with the husband, preceded her to the other world. She united with the Methodist church in 1856 and remained a member of that church until 1891, at which time she united with the Christian church and remained in its fold until the time of her death. She leaves an aged father, seven children, two brothers and two sisters to mourn her loss. It will surely please our God to give her a place in his peaceful realm. Her funeral services were conducted by Rev. A. D. Veatch at the Christian church, at 10 o'clock a.m., Feb. 11, 1896, and her body laid to rest in the Barry cemetery.

JAMES WILLIAM SNIDER
, 79, who was born in Quincy, Il.,died peacefully early Monday morning with family members at his side in St. Louis County. Born April 8, 1931, he was the son of Ella Mae Goodapple and the grandson of Edna and James E. Hoskins. He graduated Quincy High School in 1949. He was a class officer and a school newspaper columnist. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, and later was a salesman who worked for several national companies. He is survived by his wife, the former Francie Hoover of Pittsfield, Il., whom he married in 1951, and their children, James T. Snider of Mokena, Il., Guy W. Snider of Los Angeles, Gail Snider of St. Louis, and Amy Snider Senk of Corona del Mar, Ca.; grandchildren James Adam and Angela Snider, Melissa Snider, and Aaron and Jilly Senk; and many nieces and nephews throughout the country. Jim was known for his love of music, history and literature, and fine wines, but mostly for his sense of humor and his legendary storytelling skills. Private services will take place in Pittsfield, Il. Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Pittsfield, Il. is in charge of arrangements.
EDWARD WILLIAM SPARKS
- Funeral services for Edward William Sparks, 79, of Barry, Route 1, who died Friday in Jacksonville, will be held Monday afternoon...in the Frey funeral home in Liberty and at 2 in the Kingston Union chapel. Burial will be in the Kingston cemetery. Mr. Sparks was born in Richfield township, Feb. 17, 1878, a son of John and Julia Shawl Sparks. He farmed near Kingston for many years. He attended the Akers school and was a member of the Kingston Union chapel. He was married to Miss Nellie Rathburn, Oct. 20, 1903, in Quincy. Surviving are the widow; a daughter, Mrs. Verner Cook of Mt. Sterling; a son, Oden Sparks of Rock Island; three grandchildren, Russell Sparks of Rock Island, Mrs. Marion Sutton of Liberty and Miss Edith Cook of Mt. Sterling, and three great-grandchildren. A brother and sister preceded her in death.
GEORGE V. SPELLMAN
, 94, passed away Wednesday, June 16, 2010 at the Illini Community Hospital in Pittsfield . He was born in Louisiana , Mo. on May 26, 1916 a son of Frank and Elizabeth Spellman. He married Leila Fox Swanson in 1945 and she preceded him in death in 1997.
George was a foreman for the Brown Shoe Company for thirty-one years then later was employed for Explosive Inc. and Econex/Dyno Nobel as a truck driver. He was a member of the First Christian Church of Pittsfield and enjoyed fishing, hunting, yard work, gardening and his family.
He is survived by his daughter, Sandra and husband Gregg Carnes of Pittsfield , and special friend, Nadine Ransom of Pittsfield . Grandchildren surviving are Ryan Carnes, Gay Siepker, Karen (Dean) Jingst, Patti (Dean) Westerman, and Ray (Marsha) Arnold. Great grandchildren surviving are Amanda (Shaun) McGovern, Darin (Janice) Edwards, Heather Faught, Michelle Baucom, Chrissi Baucom, Shaylon (Bradley) Grant, Travis Arnold, Shane Arnold and Scarlett Buchwald along with ten great great grandchildren. A nephew, Ben Spellman and numerous nieces and nephews in Missouri and Iowa also survive.
George was preceded in death by two stepdaughters, Marjorie Benson and Scharlene Arnold, eleven brothers and sisters, and a great granddaughter, Summer Cheney Arnold.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, June 22, 2010 at the Niebur Funeral Home in Pittsfield . Interment will be in the Pittsfield West Cemetery . Visitation will be held Monday evening, June 21, from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the Niebur Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to the Pittsfield Little League Park, Pittsfield Theatre Guild or St. Jude’s Hospital for Children in Memphis , Tennessee .
JUANITA M. SPRINGER
, 93 of Pittsfield, IL passed away Monday, August 16, 2010 at the Illini Community Hospital Emergency Room. She was born on November 24, 1916 in Pearl, IL, a daughter to Jesse and Ethel Johnston Landess. She married Richard Springer on April 17, 1937 and he preceded her in death in August 2003.
Juanita was a waitress in Milton restaurants and a bookkeeper for her husband’s DX fuel delivery business. She attended the Greenpond Christian Church and the New Hartford Christian Church. She was a member of the Pike County Saddle Club, Fireside Camping Club and enjoyed needlepoint, crocheting, baking, cooking, gardening and flower gardening where she enjoyed raising gladiolas and zinnias. She dearly loved her dog “Mister”.
She is survived by sons, Robert (Linda) Springer of Pearl and Ron (Sharon) Springer of Pittsfield and son-in-law, Bob Carter of Mexico, MO along with six grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren.
Juanita was preceded in death by a daughter, Carol Ann Carter in December of 2008 and a great grandson, Jason Mountain.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, August 18, 2010 at the Greenpond Christian Church near Pearl with Herschel Carter officiating. Interment will be in the Greenpond Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 11:30 until 1:30 on Wednesday, prior to the service at the church.
GEORGE HERMAN STAGGS
- Services for George Herman Staggs, 85, a lifelong resident of Barry, who died Friday (July 28, 1972) at 6:20 p.m. in the Illini Community Hospital in Pittsfield, will be held Sunday...in the Gill Memorial Home with the Rev. Robert Byler officiating. Burial will be in Park Lawn Cemetery. Mr. Staggs was born Sept. 16, 1888, a son of Edward and Alice Hull Staggs. He was a retired barber and a member of the Baptist Church and Barry Lodge No. 34 A.F. and A.M. He was married to Stella Mae Hays Dec. 4, 1908, in Quincy. She preceded him in death. Surviving are two sons, Edward of Quincy and Elmo of Pittsfield; five grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Lee, an infant daughter and a brother Ernest Stagg.
STELLA (HAYS) STAGGS
, 80 of Barry died...Saturday, January 30, 1971, in the Churchill Nursing Home at Barry. She had been in ill health for several years. Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, February 1, in the Lock Funeral Home, the Rev. Robert Byler officiating with burial in Park Lawn Cemetery in Barry. Casket beaers were Myrl Coultas, Jack Jennings, Meredith Hull, William Predmore, Robert Ownby and Donald Morley. She was born March 27, 1890, in Barry, the daughter of Nathan and L. Jane Kimball Hays. She attended Barry schools and was a member of the Barry United Methodist Church. She was married to George Staggs on December 4, 1908. Mrs. Staggs was a member of Pike Chapter 20, Order of the Eastern Star; a past national commander of the Army Mothers Auxiliary; a past district director of the American Legion Auxiliary in Barry; and past chairman of the Pike County Democratic Women's organization. Surviving are her husband, George; two sons, Edward of Quincy and Elmo of Pittsfield; four brothers, Carl and Percy of Barry and Francis and Loraine of Kansas City, Mo.; four sisters, Nina Walthers of Barr, Leona Skamris and Helen Churchill of Kansas City, Mo., and Eydth Miller of Tuscon, Ariz. Also surviving are five grand children and twelve great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by an infant daughter Edna Mae, a son Lee, and a brother Fred. ROSA MARY STOREY
, 84, died Tuesday, Sept. 7, 2010, at Rosewood Care Center in Alton. Born May 29, 1926, in Pleasant Hill, she was the daughter of Lewis and Marie (Shive) Cardiff. She was preceded death by her husband, John J. Storey. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Phyllis and Bob Corwin of Littleton, Colo., a son and daughter-in-law, Preston and Vicki Waltrip of Bethalto, several grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and two sisters, Irma Peck of Pleasant Hill and Vada Terrell of Macon, Mo.

BEVERLY (FUSSELMAN) STORK
, 49, of Forrest, died Wednesday Jan. 27, 2010, at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center in Bloomington.
Funeral services were at 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 1, at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Forrest with Rev. Corrine Blissard officiating. Visitation was from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. prior to services at the church, where memorials may be made to her family. Interment was at Forrest Township Cemetery — Forrest.
Bev was born July 12, 1960, in Pittsfield, a daughter of Robert E. and Joyce N. (Westfall) Fusselman. She married John D. Stork, Feb. 28, 1987, in Forrest. He survives.
Also surviving are three sons, Travis Fusselman of Baylis, Derek Stork of Forrest and Dustin (Amber Brinings) Stork of Forrest; three grandchildren, Alana, Matthew and Corbin Fusselman; her mother, Joyce Fusselman of Baylis; one sister, Cathy (Mike) Boliger of Bartonville; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father, and one brother: Bradley. Bev was a welder for the former Norfolk and Western Railroad (now Norfolk and Southern) for more than 28 years.
She loved to be outside, ride her Honda motorcycle and go deer hunting. She enjoyed socializing with the girls at the coffee shop and helping others. She was a dedicated volunteer at the Forrest Food Pantry.
She attended St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Forrest, and was a member of the Brotherhood of Maintenance Away with Norfolk & Southern Railroad.
Bev made many people smile, and touched many hearts.
ELIZABETH ANN (RAINWATER) STORM
, 87 of Pittsfield, passed away Saturday, October 9, 2010 at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, IL. Elizabeth was born February 1, 1923 in Pittsfield, IL, a daughter to John & Edna Kern Rainwater. She married John Storm on December 29, 1946 in the Rainwater home.
She graduated from Pittsfield High School in 1940 where she was valedictorian of her class and studied music in public school. She started voice lessons starting her sophomore year under Delmar Shaw and studied voice under Ann Bonan Singa. She then attended MacMurray College in Jacksonville, IL for four years majoring in music and studied drama under Hugh Beggs all four years of college. After graduating in 1944 from MacMurray College she taught music and English at Beecher City High School for two years.
Elizabeth was employed at Montgomery Ward Store in Lincoln, IL as a cashier from 1947 – 1950. Her and John decided to take a three month, 12,000 mile vacation and traveled south to Louisiana, up the Rio Grande and on to southern California, continuing on to Canada, down to Yellow Stone National Park and then home. On their journey they stayed with many of their relatives.
After a short period of employment at MacDonnell Aircraft Company, she settled down to raising two children, Eda Jane, born September 12, 1951 and James Otis, born October 16, 1952, and this was her full time job for sixteen years. She then attended Southern Illinois University and majored in English and French and received a masters degree in French then went back to teaching in Girard, IL for eleven years.
Elizabeth attended the Pittsfield United Methodist Church and enjoyed knitting, pencil and watercolor drawings, drawing and collecting butterflies, square dancing, going on vacations and traveling all over the United States.
She is survived by her husband John of Pittsfield and a son, James Otis Storm of Alton, IL. She was preceded in death by her daughter Eda Jane.
Services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, October 14, 2010 at the Niebur Funeral Home in Pittsfield with Rev. Tom Wilber officiating. Interment will be in the Pittsfield West Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. until 11 a.m., prior to the service at the funeral home.

, 93 of Pittsfield, died Saturday, June 4, 2011, at the Pittsfield Manor in Pittsfield. John was born in Brownstown, in Fayette County Nov. 14, 1917, a son to Samuel B. and Margaret Violet Coons Storm. He married Elizabeth Rainwater Dec. 29, 1946 at the home of Elizabeth’s parents, John and Edna Rainwater near Pittsfield. Elizabeth preceded John in death Nov. 9, 2010.
John retired from Boeing Aircraft and McDonald-Douglas in St. Louis, Mo as an aircraft mechanic. He was a member of the Pittsfield United Methodist Church, a lifetime NRA member and a member of the Illinois Nut Growers Association. He was an avid hunter and enjoyed hunting in Colorado, inventing hatchets, knife making, and blacksmithing. John and Elizabeth enjoyed traveling the United States and had traveled 12,000 miles in a three month vacation traveling south to Louisiana, up the Rio Grande, on to southern California, continuing on to Canada, and down to Yellow Stone National Park.
He is survived by his son, James Otis Storm of Alton, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, a daughter, Eda Jane, four brothers, Bernard, Paul, Gene and Leon and sisters, Nadine and Virginia.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., today, Wednesday, June 8, at the Niebur Funeral Home in Pittsfield with Rev. Tom Wilber officiating. Visitation will be held Wednesday from 10 a.m. until time of service at the funeral home. Interment will be in the Pittsfield West Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the youth hunter Education Program or donor’s choice.
HERMAN M. SUHLING
, 71, of Hammond, and a Calhoun County native, died at Friday, March 19, 2010, at St. John's Hospice in Springfield.
He was born June 24, 1938 at Hillcrest in Calhoun County, a son of Charles W. and Wilhelmina B. Goetz Suhling. He married Sandra J. Thomas Sept. 22, 1959 in Pittsfield and she survives.
Herman was a long time employee of the Panhandle Eastern Pipeline Company, beginning his career in Pleasant Hill and retiring from the Tuscola plant.
He was an Air Force veteran of the Vietnam conflict and a life time member of the Pleasant Hill American Legion Post and also a life time member of the Harman House Museum in Pleasant Hill. He enjoyed hunting and was a member of the National Rifle Association. Most importantly, he was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather.
Survivors include his wife, Sandra J. Suhling of Hammond; a daughter, Debra (David) Hinds of Decatur; two granddaughters, Amanda and Chelsea Retherford; two great-grandsons, Clayton B. and Evan Michael Retherford; five sisters, Maxine Trosley of Moro, Virginia Frye of Alton, Annette Clark of Hannibal, Mo., Ann Marie Bollinger of East Alton and Rachel Asmus of Overland Park, Kan.; also two brothers, Aloys C. Suhling of St. Charles, Mo. and Roy E. Suhling of Pleasant Hill; numerous nieces and nephews; a mother-in-law, Bessie Thomas of Pleasant Hill; a brother-in-law, John Thomas of Pleasant Hill; and a sister-in-law, Georgia Smith of Granite City.
Herman was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Evelyn Simmons and Betty Jean Suhling in childhood • and by a brother,' Virgil Suhling.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 23 at 11 a.m. at the Lummis Funeral Home in Pleasant Hill. Burial, with military honors, followed at Crescent eights Cemetery in Pleasant Hill. Visitation was held Monday evening from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Crescent Heights Cemetery Association, St. John's Hospice in Springfield or to the charity or organization of the donor's choice. Lummis Funeral Home in Pleasant Hill is handling the arrangements.
JOSEPH ADRIAN SUHLING
, 82, died at 9:25 p.m. Monday, Feb. 8, 2010, at St. John's Hospice, Springfield, following a brief illness.
He was born Sept. 15, 1927, near Kampsville, the younger son of Walter R. and Mary Blanche (Christner) Suhling. He graduated from Kampsville High School before entering the Army. He began working at Mrs. Tucker's (later Anderson Clayton Foods) in Jacksonville, Ill., in 1955, until his retirement in 1993. He lived in the Woodson/Jacksonville area most of his life until moving to Pleasant Hill in 2001.
He married the former Shirley Jayne Penn on Aug. 14, 1949. She preceded him in death on Jan. 14, 1999. He married Corda Lee Hagen on July 28, 2001, who survives.
He is also survived by three children, daughters, N. Christine Suhling of Denver, Colo., Brenda J. (Mark) Allan of Auburn, Ill., and son, Vaughn J. (Darlene) Suhling of rural Arenzville, Ill.; one grandchild, Casey Lauren Suhling of St. Louis; one brother, Walter R. (Mary) Suhling of Perry, Ill. He is also survived by two stepdaughters, Tambra (Jim) Stewart of Springfield, Ill., and Melody (Larry) Clark of Fulton, Mo., and several stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren.
His hobbies included woodworking and collecting antique farm tractors. He had been involved in Prairieland Heritage Museum in Jacksonville, Ill., and was a member of the American Legion in Pleasant Hill. He had been a longtime member of various Methodist churches in the Jacksonville area, especially being involved in vocal choirs and Methodist Men. He later became a member of the Belleview Community Evangelical Church, Belleview, Ill., having been Sunday school superintendent and song leader.
Services will take place at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 12, at Belleview Community Evangelical Church, followed by graveside services at Diamond Grove Cemetery, Jacksonville, Ill.
