JAMES W. WHITNEY (History Book Article)
often called "Lord Coke", died Dec. 13, 1860 at his residence in Pleasant Hill. His death was occasioned by old age. He was born in Salisbury, Conn. When quite small, his father moved to Pittsfield, Mass. and when young Whitney was of a suitable age he was sent to Williams college where he graduated. He afterward studied law under Hon. P. G. Childs of Cazonovia, N. Y.
About the year 1817 he settled at Alton, Ill. Alton was then a territory. At that time Madison county embraced not only what now constitutes Madison county proper, but the entire Military Tract-and how much more we cannot say--but it was larger than some empires.
After sojourning at Alton (or what is now Alton), Whitney settled in Atlas, Pike County. He finally settled in Pleasant Hill where he remained.
He was elected the first Township Clerk in Pleasant Hill Township in 1850, when local voters approved and organized under the Township Organization Act.
Mr. Whitney, often called "Lord Coke", arrived in the area in 1825 and witnessed the growth and development from it's beginning to 1850 when he recorded the historical facts as he recalled them. The book is a very valuable record and in addition to the early history recorded also contains minutes of Township meetings starting with the first meetings in 1850. The book is stored in a fire proof safe in the Township building.
Mr. Whitney was also known in early Pike county history and served as the first clerk of the county court. Pleasant Hill was his home and at the time of death he resided in a cabin in the original Town of Pleasant Hill. (Up on the hill in Pleasant Hill -kr)
He was well and favorably known all over Illinois. Although his exact age was not known, we believe he was between 83 and 85. "Lord Coke" visited Vandalia every session of the legislature, dressed in homespun, wearing a long queue like gentlemen of olden time. He was regularly installed President of the Lobby. Under his management this lobby became quite potential with the general legislation.
When he had occasion to travel from his residence to other places he generally took his cane and journeyed on foot avoiding stages and steamers as he would the pestilence. Towards the close of his life, however, he sometimes traveled to Springfield by railroad.
Mr. Whitney was once married and for a short time lived with his family (a wife and son) in Massachusetts, but from some cause unknown, he one day picked up his clothes and left, and neither went back nor corresponded with them afterward.
He was a Mason and was buried with Masonic honors in the South burial ground at Pittsfield. He left some property and a will, bequeathing most of it to his two nephews.

He had cofessed faith in Christ. His father, James Whitney, reached his bedside a few hours before he died, and returned with the remains, which were buried in Griggsville cemetery by the I. 0. O. F. of Perry, assisted by the Griggsville lodge.
