"Elder" Samuel Applegate married Sarah Stark. Samuel enlisted in the War of 1812, serving from Jan. 15, 1814 in Capt. Berry's Co., Tennessee Militia and was discharged on July 15, 1814. After the war, he lived in Kingston, Rhone Co., Tenn. where his brother, Nathaniel, lived, then in Washington Co., Ind. and finally, Pike Co., Ill. He was an elder in the Baptist church and was ordained an elder in 1825.

Headstone Inscription:
In memory of ELDER SAML APPLEGATE (sic) BORN FEB. 5, 1783
Ordained Elder in the Baptist Church in the yr A.D. 1825 and departed this life in full fellowship with said Church Sept. 12, A. D. 1870.
