Joseph and Rebecca (Walton) Cooper

Joseph Cooper, the son of Joseph R. and Mary Cooper, was born in Akron, Summit County Ohio in 1819. He died in Pittsfield, Pike County Illinois in 1857.

Rebecca (Walton) Cooper was born in Akron in 1811. She died in 1872 in Patoka, Marion County Illinois, buried in the same cemetery with her son Franklin J. Cooper. Rebecca was the daughter of Joseph and Sarah (Wallace) Walton. Rebecca was first married to a Davis, and had one daughter with him. Her name was Sarah Ann Davis. Land Records in 1860 show Rebecca Cooper living in Section 15 of Pittsfield IL. Other neighbors living near Rebecca at this time are A. Curless Section 9 & 10. Her son William Cooper married two of his daughter. The family of Mr. Gerton lived nearby, he is mentioned as helping Rebecca cut her 75 acre acre of wheat. Joseph Merrick Bush lived in the neighborhood. He was Editor of the Pike Co Democrat at the time. William A. Grimshaw living nearby was an attorney and civil leader and was the oldest son of William Grimshaw the noted historical author.

Rebecca then married Joseph Cooper about 1840 in Ohio. They became the parents of 6 children.

Franklin J. Cooper 3 November 1841 in Highland, Madison Co IL. He married Margaret Elizabeth Sweringen 29 November 1866 Pike Co IL. Franklin J. and Margaret are both buried at Patoka Cemetery in Marion County IL. Franklin 1841 - 14 May 1921 and Margaret E. 1847 - 11 January 1918. His Death Certificate recorded in Marian County IL indicates he ws Mill Right. Cause of death: First Accident Fractured, Kip Second Shock. See Military Records

William E. Cooper 1 July 1845 in Highland, Madison Co IL, died 7 Nov 1927 in Sac Iowa. Married first to Rachel Ann Curless 22 February 1866 in Pike County IL. Rachel was the daughter of Abiah and Andrise (Hill) Curless. His 2nd marriage was to Julia Ann Curless March 2, 1893 in New Salem IL, Pike County IL. Julia was the daughter of Abia and Anna (Hill) Curless. William and Rachel were the parents of John F., Charley, William Walter, Nellie Rose Cooper born 3 Oct 1872 in DeKalb Co IL., Philander Rollie, Milo Merton, Ada Lena, Elma Pearle and Alta.

William and Julia were the parents of Guy Sherman and Cecil Clayton. William Cooper was buried in Oakland Cemetery in Sac City IA. See Military "letter from home"

Francis M. Cooper 1848 in Highland, Madison Co IL. He died July 7, 1910 Santa Ana, Orange Co. CA. Francis married Mary M. Metcalf in Los Angeles CA September 1887 who was born March 13, 1854 in London England ad died Feb. 22, 1940 in Santa Ana CA. Death Certificate: Lower Jaw contributed by decayed foot. Jacob Milton Cooper 5 Sep 1850 in Highland, Madison Co IL married Josie Celia Underwood of PA. They had two children. Duncan Milton and Frank Duane Copper who was born in NE, Frank died a young man. Duncan married Maude Serena Epperson on 11 September 1901 in Watago IL.
(some information from "Jane" at Rootsweb World Connect) - Duncan homesteaded in 1908 East of Wibaux, Mont. Duncan took a leave of absence and put in a crop on his land and dug a well. This made life a little more pleasant for Maud and the little boys. Duncan was also music instructor for Band at the Custer County High School. He and Maude and their boys had a family orchestra until the boys went from the home to their own business.

Mary E. Cooper Dec 1852 she married James A. Seawell. The earliest record for Mary is found on the 1880 Census of Jackson, Sac Co Iowa. On the 1880 census there are two children listed - Viola age 4 and Edith age 1. In 1885 the census shows an additional daughter, Mabelle Sewell age 3.
