Notes for DYAS FRAZIER PARKER:

DYAS FRAZIER PARKER

As recalled by his daughter, Daisy Parker Marshall

He and Robert H. Cunningham came to Fulton, Kentucky about 1876 and opened a dry goods store in the old Paschall Block, the only brick block in town. Mama said the girls certainly did try to see who could catch him but she was a graduate fresh from boarding school and her father the most influential man in the county. They were married a short time after Grandpa died. I don't know just how long they were in business , anyway my step-grandmother re-married so Mama and Papa went out on the farm 6 miles east of Fulton on State Line Road. In the meantime Papa had a flour mill, called The Old Red Mill located on the Illinois Central Railroad track just a short distance on the Tennessee side. Papa spent a fortune on the farm. He had the finest orchard ever heard of in that part of the country, trees you never heard of, also several thoroughbred horses to breed from and fine registered hogs. Well, knowing nothing about any of it, it didn't take him long to lose a good part of it, so he traded it to a man named Latta for a grocery store and moved back to the home place which still (1961) stands in Fulton. He then traded the grocery store for a saw mill. That is when we started moving. We went to Greenfield, Tennessee, and when the best part of the timber was cut we moved on to Sharon, Tennessee. The next move was to Cairo, Illinois, when I was only eleven years old so I wasn't very old when some of these things happened and with only a child's memory but I think this is pretty correct. Papa was a night-watchman for the old Halliday grain elevator for twenty-odd years until it burned one night while he was eating supper getting ready to go to work.

He was born August 08, 1878 in Anna, Union Co., Illinois, and died June 22, 1945 in Cairo, Alexander Co., Illinois.

Notes for JOHN MANFORD MARSHALL:

At the time of his marriage to Daisy Parker on June 7, 1905 John Manford Marshall was a traveling salesman for Feuchter Brothers. Following this, he and a man named Marx became partners in a factory in Cairo, Illinois, that manufactured overalls, a popular item in a farming area. During World War I they had a contract with the U.S. Army to manufacture items of army uniforms.

In 1927 he became a traveling salesman for the Schwanda Company, a button manufacturer. Buttons were also a popular item as many clothes were made at home, especially at this period of time. He was very successful and hard-working and many times his trips lasted from four to six weeks "on the road" with him spending his nights in boarding houses catering to travelling men such as himself. His grandson, John Frederick Marshall, recalls his automobile being loaded down with "sample cases" containing thousands of buttons of all types sold by dry goods stores. .

John Manford Marshall is remembered as being a very religious man and attended various churches while on the road. He was also a 32nd Degree Mason and a Knight Templar in that order.

His death was by accidental drowning on a fishing trip by himself to Horseshoe Lake near Cairo, Illinois, and he was buried in the family plot in Thistlewood Cemetery at Mounds, Pulaski County, Illinois.

Notes for HARRY PARKER MARSHALL:

Harry Parker Marshall spent the first half of his life in Cairo, Illinois, where he was born. His boyhood was fairly typical for a small town in those days. One of his proudest possessions was a single-shot .22 calibre rifle he used for hunting along the Mississippi River levees and borrow pits often accompanied by his collie dog named Laddie. As a young man he acquired an Indian motorcycle which he rode on weekend outings with friends.

His first job was at a local florist,Cades, followed by his employment with Armour Company as a bookkeeper and then with Thistlewood Dairy, owned by a boyhood friend, where he worked until moving to New Orleans, Louisiana, in 1945. In New Orleans he worked for Flintkote Manufacturing Company, making roofing and floor tile, followed by Chrysler Corporation who made army tank engines at their Michoud plant in New Orleans. His last job was at Chalmette Laundry , in New Orleans, until he retired.

Being an avid hunter and fisherman all of his life he made the most of what South Louisiana had to offer a sportsman. He was also a member of the Anglers Club on Rabbit Island where he spent many enjoyable days and nights.

Returning to southern Illinois in 1970, Harry and Mina (Munsell) Marshall established residence in Olive Branch, Alexander County, Illinois, on Horseshoe Lake, where they resided until returning to Louisiana on April 7, 1993, to take up residence in the Harahan Guest House, a nursing home in Harahan, Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, where Harry Marshall passed away on June 11, 1995, at 88 years of age.
