1. "Ullin, Illinois......history question"

How was it named?

I'm researching Pierre Hulin (var. Ullin, Ulin, Ulain, etc.), his AmerIndienne wife, Dorothee Accica, and their neighbors, Mr. and Mrs. Jacques Bernard, dit St. Jacques.  They appear in a few St. Clair County early records, at Fort de Chartres and Kaskaskia, as early as 1724, but my Hulin's origins are elusive.  Found this town in Pulaski County in my encyclopedia when I first began my quest -- too long ago to mention -- and have been wondering about it ever since.  Can someone settle a bet I have with myself?

2. "Re: Ullin, Illinois......history question"

According to the book "Pulaski County, Illinois 1819-1987"...
" Soon after the building of the I.C. Railroad, a man named James Bell built a large saw mill near the place where the railroad crosses the Cache River in the northwest part of Pulaski county.  A post office was soon established and since the postmaster's name was Ullen, it was decided to call the town Ulen.  In the writing of the name, a mispelling occured, and the outcome was Ullin, only happening by mistake."

So, I am curious - who wins the bet?

Hope this helps,

Sharon

3. "Re: Ullin, Illinois......history question"

Hi Sharon,

I won, of course.  I'd bet it was named for a person.   But I was hoping for Hulin relatives.   My Hulin was already down in Louisiana by 1752.   A whole new similarly named crew (Hulings) had come into Illinois by 1818.  No one's ever made a connection between the two groups.  Likely the postmaster was one of theirs not mine.

Thanks for looking that up for me.

Susan

4. "Re: Ullin, Illinois......history question"

From my book Pulaski County Illinois 1819-1987, it reads:  "Samuel Ulen, born 1798 and Margaret Thompson Ulen, Born 1810, arrived in Pulaski County from Greenup County, KY.  Here in their newfound land, Samuel and his family founded Ullin, which name it still bears.  The town was named after the Ulen family but due to the very simplicity of the spelling, it was accidentally misspelled when it was sent in to be recorded; an error which was never corrected.  I hope this answers your question. My husband is from Ullin and this is the story I heard but we do not know it as fact.  There is a family with the last name of Ulen in town.  And some where up state when submitting the name of the town the spelling was wrong and It was filed as Ullin. I do know there are several Ulen families in that town

Actually - this doesn't have anything to do with Ullin.
I was just wondering if your Pulaski County book mentions any
murders that happened early 1881???
My g,g grandpa killed a man over a calf.  I was just wondering if
the book mentions anything.
thanks.
