From Jo Cohrs - Descendant, February 2004
It's believed that Curtis, Mary & the child went to California during the gold rush and he died there around 1850 in Monrovia, California but not proven. I saw a Mary Chance listed in California at one time but can NOT seem to find it again.

1835 Illinois State Census states Curtis Chance had TWO females under age 10. Martha Ann (birth 1840, Ohio) is listed in the 1860 census living with Hugh and is age 20 and born in Ohio. Unless we can find her elsewhere in the 1850 census, hard to connect her as a descendant of Curtis's. LDS sheets show her birth 1833 but the 1860 census doesn't support that it's Martha Ann. Possibly another unknown female?

C.A. Chance

Curtis Anthony Chance of Cotage Hill, an invalid for a number of years, died at his home last Friday about five o'clock. He has battled manfully for a long time against the monster, making journeys to the Springs in Coloado and Arkansas, in quest of health, but seemingly every effort was baffled and after much suffering and emaciation, has yielded up his life at age of 50 years, 11 months and 2 days. He was a native of Putnam county, where he has always resided, born May 18, 1849. Married Esther E. Allen, who died July 22, 1886, leaving him with five sons and one daughter. One October 4, 1887, he was again married to Sarah A. Springer, by whomhe had four children; the widow and eight children are left to mourn the loss of a devoted husband and father. The funeral was held Monday, which was largely attended, as Mr. Chance was widely known and respected, Rev. Bliss officiating. Interment at Florid.

WENESDAY, MAY 2, 1900

CURTIS ANTHONY CHANCE

Last week, the record gave a mere announcement of the death of Anthony Chance of Cottage Hill, having no data at that time from which to form an obituary. Mr. Chance as many of our readers know, had been in declinging health for the past three years and neither medicine or change of climite it seems had the power to stay the disease which had taken a hold upon him. He had tried many physicians, visited the famous mineral springs of Colorado and other parts, but all to no purpose and on April 20, his spirit took its flight to the world beyond.

Deceased was born in Putnam County May 18, 1849 and died April 20, 1900, age 50 years, 11 months and two days. He grew to manhood in the vicinity of his birth, and on December 31, 1872, he was united in marriage with Miss Esther Allen, who died July 22, 1886, leaving him with six children, 5 sons and one daughter. October 4, 1887, he was again married to Sara A. Springer, by whom he had 4 children. Of the ten children, 2 daughters, one by the first wife and one by the second, are deceased. The widow and eight children survive to mourn the loss of an affectionate husband and kind father. He spent all of his life in Putnam County and his body now rests in the Florid cemetery, where the funeral services were held, conducted by Reverend Bliss.

Herman Chance Dies From Injury In Auto Accident

Herman Chance, a brother of Mrs. Charles Meier and Russell Chance of this city, died at the Proctor hospital in Peoria, early Sunday morning as the result of injuries sustained in an unexplained automobile mishap, a few hours previous. A Coroner's inquest held at Peoria last Monday, determined that the death of the unfortunate young man was accidental but the real facts of the case will perhaps remain a mystery.

Lack of witnesses limited the scope of investigation, and as the injured man was unconscious when found alongside the road near the Municipal Sanatorium, presumably on his way to Chillicothe, by John Willimas of 1108 Hanssler Place, Peoria, and died without regaining the use of his faculties, no statement as to the cause of the accident could be obtained from him. When found, Mr. Chance lay outside his overturned truck, and one version is that he lost control of his machine which plunged into a ditch and overturned.

Herman Clifford Chance, son of Curtis A. and Sarah Ann Chance, was born on a farm near McNabb, Putnam county, Illinois, September 21, 1895 and died at the Proctor hospital, Peoria, Sunday, November 23, 1930 at 7:00 a.m. aged 35 years, 2 months and 2 days. Death was due to a fractured skull and internal injures sustained in an auto mishap, as stated above.

The deceased was a resident of Florid previous to his coming to Henry some seven years ago. While here, he was employed a portion of the time by Meier Bros. as a roofer and furnace man. The past year he had resided in Peoria, where he was employed as a service man for the Vaughn oil burner, a position he held at the time of his death. Mr. Chance was an ex-serviceman, belonging to the 68th Field Artillery, and was first at Camp Know, Ky. He was also a member of the M.E. Church.

He is survived by his sister, Mrs. Charles Meier, and brother, Russell Chance, both of this city; two half-sisters, Mrs. Wm. Morris of Varna and Mrs. Carrie Pickerill of Minnesota, and a half-brother, John Springer, of Granville. A brief funeral service was held at the home of Mrs. Charles Meier on Market street at 1 o'clock this (Wednesday) afternoon, the cortege then leaving for Florid, where the service proper was held at the M.E. Church, Rev. H.G. Dusenberry of this city, officiating. The singing was in charge of Mrs. Leam Hunt and Mrs. Marion Pogemiller. Interment was in the Florid cemetery with Louis Meier, Bert Hoppler, Mr. Vaughn and Mr. Lucas of Peoria, Roby Smith and Grover Kirby serving as casket bearers. Those from a distance in attendance at the obsequies, were Mrs. Grace Mangnall and Mrs. Agnes Alleman of Chicago, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Morris of Varna and J.C. Springer of Granville.
