DIVORCED, MARRIAGE VOID
Harrisburg Judge Holds Indiana Wedding Is Evasion of Law.
Harrisburg, Ill., Oct. 27. - Marriage within one year of persons divorced in Illinois has been held illegal by Judge A. W. Lewis, no matter where the ceremony is performed. The judge held that divorced persons leaving the state to wed and returning have evaded the law. The case was that of Emeline Rouse, nee Cole, deceased, who obtained a divorce in Saline county in 1905 and married Jefferson Talven in Mount Vernon, Ind., five days later, immediately returning to Illinois. The husband claimed dower rights in the dead woman's estate, but was overruled on the ground that his marriage was illegal. [Rock Island Argus. (Rock Island, Ill.), 27 Oct. 1909]
