Sangamon County
ST. BERNARD (aka Sugar Creek) CEMETERY

Ball Township, Sangamon County, IL

This cemetery is located ¼ mile north from 0.5W and 12S. West of Glenarm.
In NW corner of SW ¼ of SE ¼ section 28, T14N R5W, Third P.M.

St. Bernard Cemetery is fenced, well maintained, and active.
It was recorded by Norma Jean Krohe Wilkinson and Shirley Carroll Fuhrmann.

The earliest tombstone date found was 1829 for Ellen Burtle.
Robert J. Burtle of Glenarm, Illinois is the sexton for this cemetery. He noted that the cemetery records consist mainly of income and expense information. Very little information was available about any burials.
The Constitution and By-Laws of St. Bernard Cemetery Association of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Afton, Illinois were incorporated under the Laws of the State of Illinois on September 14, 1913. During the 1860s the church, which was located at the north corner of the present cemetery was known originally as the Sugar Creek Catholic Church. The Church was demolished in the 1950s.
The atlas of 1874 shows the landowner as Z. Burtle; 1894, J. T. Burtle, Sr.; and 1914, Jas. H. Burtle. On each of the previous atlases, a church and cemetery are shown.

Additional information may be found in The History of the Early Settlers of Sangamon County, Illinois, by John Carroll Power, 1876, in the biographical sketches of Jacob Ball (Boll), page 126; Valentine Boll, pages 125-126; William Burtle, pages 162-163; Thomas Greenawalt, pages 339-340; Zachariah Ogden, pages 549-550; Casper Young, page 795.

These burials were sent in by Catherine Renschler who is related to the BOLL and YOUNG (JUNG) families
They were transcribed and formatted for Genealogy Trails by K. Torp
