SCHOOLS of SANGAMON COUNTY
Submitted by Debbie Quinn
Country schools in Sangamon County were recorded as early as the 1820's according to the 1874 Atlas of Sangamon County. When country schools were first established , some landowners deeded about an acre of land to the school district with the provision that when the property was no longer used as a school, the land reverted to the original owner or his heirs.
The Ordiance of 1785 stated that "Section 16" of each of the 26 townships be set aside for the maintenance of the schools. One-room school buildings were erected as the population grew and were usually within walking distance. The early schools had a fall term and a spring term, which were often taught by different teachers. Most of the schools had poor lighting and heat, wells and no plumbing then around 1912 the Illinois Legislature set up uniform school standards which were to be completed by 1917. The standards were: Each building was to have two doors, front and back; a jacketed furnace in a back corner of the room; windows on the left side of the pupils' desks; an ante-room for lunch pails, coats, and dringking cups; a cement walk in front; a certified teacher; and county examinations held at specific times. This was called a "standard school".
The schools are listed under townships. Click on the township and it will take you to the schools within that township. You can also search by school name here.
