Times newspapers, was transcribed from notes typed on 3x5 cards. These notes were on movements of people with Schuyler County connections: moving, visited here or visited there; moved back, etc. Spellings were kept as found in the notes except for known typing errors. These are just NOTES. They may not include the whole item that was in the newspaper. Copies of each item can be gotten from microfilm of the newspapers, which can be found at the Schuyler County Jail Museum and Historical Society in Rushville, Illinois. |

| October 5, 1877 Mrs. Clara Cooney is visiting her sister, Mrs. McBride (nee Minerva Jones) near Decatur, Illinois. Mr. T. J. Lair ordered TIMES sent to the new farm home he has purchased in Henry County, Missouri (Clinton). George W. Branstool and Horace Bertholf left with a two horse wagon for Linn County, Kansas, to look over the country. Mr. John C. Bell and wife of Marshalltown, Iowa, arrived here to visit till after the fair, but were called home. Huntsville items: Mrs. Jessie Allshire and daughter, Jane of Allshire, Illinois, are visiting her mother, Mrs. Brumbeck; Mrs. Saylor and family, who have been living in Augusta the paste year, have returned and taken rooms at the Miller House. October 12, 1877 J. M. Angel, now of Hancock County, came down to attend the fair and visit relatives. L. D. Graves and wife of Duncan, Illinois, visited their father, Mr. Willis Carson. Mr. George H. Scripps of the DETROIT NEWS and Mrs. James E. Scripps of that city, are visiting relatives in Rushville. Mr. Ezekial Rucker of Carthage and wife attended the Fair and visited old friends. Mr. A. J. Elmore of Adair County, Missouri, is visiting his father, Mr. Thomas Elmore east of town. October 19, 1877 Huntsville item: John T. Rader of Wolcott, Indiana is visiting his brother, William H. H. Rader. Littleton item: James DeWitt plans to return to Kansas in about 2 months, taking his drugstore with him. October 26, 1877 William A. Hinman of Centralia, Missouri is attending court and visiting relatives. Charles H. Sweeney of Des Moines, Iowa is visiting relatives in Rushville. Elder E. H. Pruett and family returned from a visit to relatives in NC. Misses Lizzie and Etta Wells, daughters of Mr. Charles Wells of Omaha, Nebraska, are visiting their uncle, Dr. Worthington. Mr. H. M. Ward of Bainbridge township, returned from his visit to Indiana, accompanied by his uncle, Mr. Enoch Ward, who had not been here since 1836. Mr. B. F. Eales, who has been stopping in this vicinity, returned to Williamstown, Kentucky, accompanied by his cousin, Miss Jane Eales, who will remain there for a while visiting relatives. Richland - Mr. George Langford and Allison Ingles, accompanied by Misses Cornelia Langford and Agatha Adams, departed to visit relatives in Iowa. November 2, 1877 Misses Vestner of Carthage, have been spending a few days with their uncle, Mr. Fred Snyder. Mrs. R. H. Crump of Florida, Missouri, is visiting at her father's Mr. George Wheelhouse of Oakland township. David Ewing and wife (formerly Miss Nancy Dupoy of Pleasantview), who have resided near Denver, are visiting relatives in Schuyler County - they have been in Denver 10 years - their daughter, Mary accompanied them. November 9, 1877 Mr. Edwin Knowles and wife of Bellville, Kansas, are visiting friends in Rushville. November 16, 1877 Dr. Ayers' (Ayer's) father and mother of Vermont, came down to see the new granddaughter. Messrs. Cyrus and George Walker left last week for Winfield, Kansas, where they will engage in the grocery business. Mr. William Campbell, a former Rushville boy, was elected county clerk of Johnson County, Nebraska. Mr. Horace Bertholf returned home last week from his trip OUT WEST - his brother, Frank remained and will farm near Muskogee, in the creek Nation, Indian Territory, with a cousin who has resided there several years. Mr. Samuel Enyart, formerly of Littleton, was elected Circuit Clerk of Clay County. Huntsville items: Mrs. Benjamin Brumback of Carthage prairie, is visiting relatives in this vicinity; Mrs. Eliza Kost, with Master Freddie from Astoria, is visiting relatives here; Mr. James Gash of Macomb, formerly a resident of Huntsville, visited here. Miss Bell Bacon, daughter of Rev. Bacon, is teaching music in Beloit, Kansas. November 23, 1877 Rev. L. C. Littrell and wife of Taylorville, Illinois, are visiting relatives in Rushville. Mr. Joseph Montgomery, who has been visiting his son, Edgar in Muskegon, Michigan, returned last week. William Irwin, son of Ira Irwin of Woodstock township, has been a resident of Colorado for 3 years, returned here. Arthur Knowles, who has been working in the printing business at Independence, Kansas with his uncles, Thomas and Charles Yoe, is here visiting over the holidays. Huntsville item: Frank L. Kost has gone to visit his uncle who resides in Gallatin, Missouri. Miss Laura Bilderback of Greensburg, Missouri, is visiting here. November 30, 1877 Richland - Mrs. Richmond Langford of Yarmouth, Iowa, who has been visiting her father-in-law, returned home. Camden item: Samuel Pruett, brother of Elder H. E. Pruett, has taken up residence in our village. Western Woodstock - Miss Mary Gaffney left last week on a visit to friends and relatives in Jacksonville, Illinois. Mrs. R. H. Griffith returned home from New York, where she had been visiting relatives. J. F. Langford, Esq. of Woodstock township, went to Iowa last week, to accompany his daughter-in-law home. Mr. Mathias Hayes of Leeville, Missouri, a former citizen of Rushville, is visiting his relative, Mrs. Joseph Smith of Bainbridge. Mr. W. H. Bleecker and family of Hackensack, NJ, is visiting his father, Mr. J. J. Bleecker, Dr. of Brooklyn township. Richland items: Mr. Richard Kirby, who has been here the past year, left for his home in Indiana; Messrs. Richard and Dick Lashbrook, with their mothers, who have been visiting relatives here, returned to their home in Indiana. December 7, 1877 Miss Laura Hill went to Buda Tuesday, to spent the winter with her sister, Mrs. Charles Cowen. Mr. Frank Seeley, who has spent the past five years in Minnesota, returned to Rushville to spend the winter. Mrs. A. Tetrick residing near Cincinnati, Ohio, arrived here to visit her son, Mr. D. S. Tetrick. December 14, 1877 Camden items: Mrs. Ellen Marshall and girls of Griggsville, are visiting friends and relatives; Mr. Harrison Ashbury, late of Montana, is visiting relatives here - his first visit in 13 years; Mr. Oliver Wells and wife life this place for Texas, where he expects to join his father's family, who emigrated there a few months ago. Huntsville item: Benjamin Brumback and wife of Adrain, Illinois, are visiting. Littleton item: Miss Jennie Davis, niece of Dr. Hosea Davis, returned here after a visit to relatives in the eastern part of the state. Miss Emma Erwin of Rushville, was visiting her uncle, G. W. Erwin. Richland item: Miss Agatha Adams is expected home from Iowa today, accompanied by Mr. William Darbyshire and sister, Miss Jennie. Western Woodstock item: William Irwin returned from 3 years in Colorado, to visit. Miss Emma Bell went to Chicago to keep house for her brothers. Miss Maggie Darnell of Ocquawa, Illinois, is visiting her uncle, Honorable Jesse Darnell. Mr. Henry Kaufman of Buda, came down to help his brother-in-law, Mr. Daniel Webster, run the restaurant this winter. December 21, 1877 Mrs. Sarah Willis of New Douglas, is visiting her uncle, Rev. J. A?. Greening. Mr. T. P. Magruder of Woodstock, left to visit relatives in Maryland. December 28, 1877 Bruce Welker and family of Waterloo, Iowa, is visiting the old home. Mrs. William Tate and children of Knoxville, came to spend the holidays with her mother, Mrs. Charles Neill. Mr. William Webster and wife of Alexander, Missouri, are visiting relatives in Rushville. Huntsville item: Mrs. Phoebe J. Longsbeth of Muscatine, Iowa, is visiting her mother, Mrs. L. A. Moore. Mrs. Elizabeth King of Chester, NY, has come to spend the winter with her brother, Lewis R. King. January 4, 1878 Littleton item: Mr. Commodore Rose of the state of Oregon, is visiting relatives in Schuyler - he left here 30 years ago. Rushville - Mr. Charles E. Ray of New York, is visiting relatives here. Mrs. J. W. Davis of Cisco, Platt County, is visiting her father, Mr. R. H. Mead, Supt. of County Farm. E. P. Vail moving to Decatur. January 11, 1878 Mrs. Charles Cowen of Buda, is visiting relatives in Rushville. Mr. Zack Daniels, resident of Clay County, Arkansas 3 or 4 years, is visiting his old home in this vicinity. George B. Rogers - Orville, California R. R. Greer - Kearny, Nebraska Peter F. Grosclaude, Rushville, sends paper to two brothers in Denver, Colorado - brothers visited here recently. January 18, 1878 Wesley Hymer, of Paola, Kansas visiting relatives here. Miss Mary L. Foster of Chicago, came to spend the winter at her uncle, A. M. Foster's of this vicinity. Huntsville item: Mrs. Ida Wilson, Abingdon, is visiting her parents near here - she brings a new grandchild. Mr. Robert Granger, who spent fall and winter with relatives here, returned to his home in Missouri. January 25, 1878 William L. Persinger, son of L. G. Persinger, left with his family last week for Kansas - he will try his hand at farming near Neodesha. William Hindman, LaSalle, Illinois, subscribed to paper. February 8, 1878 John Knowles, engaged in jewelry business in Augusta the past two years, will remove to Independence, Kansas. Huntsville item: John Norvel started for Texas the 28th. Mr. Lewton, 1 mile west, sold farm to H. W. Watts and will remove to Kansas. Frank G. Taylor, old schoolmate of Huntsville correspondent, has a buggy house at Portsmouth, Ohio. February 15, 1878 Mr. Wesley Hymer returned to his home in Paola, Kansas, accompanied by Mrs. Leonard Serrott and Mrs. Abraham Lamaster, his sister-in-laws, who will visit there a while. February 22, 1878 Camden item: John Weightman of Texas, his brother, Thomas of Missouri were visiting relatives in this vicinity last week; Mr. Harrison Ashbury will return to his home in Montana soon - several of our Camden men are thinking of accompanying him. Messrs. A. R. Boice, A. Kinnear, Norman Beckwith and Calvin Jackson left this week for Franklin County, Nebraska. Joseph Messerer, La Grange, California ordered paper. March 1, 1878 Tecumseh, Nebraska merchants: Charles McCroskey, Ed Wright, George Warren - all former Schuylerites. Mr. W. W. Wells left for new home at Lawndale, Chicago - he has been a resident of Rushville for 40 years. Frank Cady of Lockport, New York, is visiting his brother, I. G. Cady of near Camden. March 8, 1878 Mr. Frank Seeley, who spent the winter here at his old home, returned to Minnesota this week. Mr. George E. Lawler and his sister, Mrs. Kuhn made a visit last week to their brother-in-law, Mr. William Zimmerman at Lewistown, Missouri, who had sold out preparatory to moving to Texas. March 15, 1878 Miss Rachel Housekeeper of Beardstown, is visiting at her brother-in-law, Edgar Anderson, Esq. The BEARDSTOWN MESSENGER says that Chauncey Rice and family, well known here, plan removal to Nebraska in a few days. March 22, 1878 Camden item: Mr. B. H. West left one day last week for Montana Territory. Mr. James Eales and his daughter, Cinda, returned home from Kentucky last week, where they had been visiting relatives. Mr. Newton Chadsey of Cherokee, Kansas and his sister, Mrs. Emily Morrison of Iowa, arrived here to visit their father, Mr. Robert Chadsey, who has been ill. Miss Mary Hill, who has been visiting relatives in Rushville, returned to her home in Buda. Mrs. G. W. Montgomery of Clayton, came over to visit her father, Mr. A. M. Nance, who is quite sick at his father-in-law's, Dr. Hubbard. Mr. James B. Winters of Sumner County, Kansas, who emigrated west about 7 years ago, is visiting friends and former neighbors in Littleton township. March 29, 1878 Lewis Bell, son of B. F. Bell, formerly of Rushville, is visiting his uncle, Mr. William Bell - he and his brother, Walla (?) have been attending Carthage College. April 5, 1878 Henry Minshall of Neoga, Illinois, was visiting relatives in Rushville this week. Honorable John P. Richmond, who has been a resident of Dakota Territory for several years, was in Rushville visiting his daughter, Mrs. J. R. Neill. April 12, 1878 Mr. A. F. Brown of Galesburg, has opened a gun shop on east side of square in Rushville. Mr. George Ritchie and daughter, Kate departed last Monday to visit relatives in Kansas and Missouri. April 26, 1878 Camden items: Mr. J. N. Rigg started for Texas last Sunday; R. W. Rigg returned from visiting relatives in Kentucky; Mr. George Stratton of Kinderhook, Pike county, was in our village visiting relatives. May 3, 1878 Judge Newton D. Witt, brother of Mrs. Sam. McCreery, who went from here to California in 1849, died there. May 10, 1878 William H. Haskell of the AMBOY JOURNAL, gave us a brief call. Mrs. G. W. Bailey of Macomb, is visiting her father, Dr. Worthington. Miss Mattie Putman will spend some time with her sister, Mrs. E. P. Vail of Decatur. Camden item: Mr. Joseph Hedrick left this vicinity several days ago for the west - a letter reports him at Bismark, on his way to Montana. May 17, 1878 Mrs. M. G. Rice is visiting at the old home at Keithburg. Mr. Owen Jackson and wife left for Kearny, Nebraska to visit relatives. Mr. William B. Ray has gone to Kearny, Nebraska, may go further west. Mr. Gideon Goodwin will move his family to Kansas, he will travel for Champion Reaper Co. Huntsville item: Dr. D. C. Everson of Kansas City, Missouri, is visiting his mother, Mrs. N. J. Everson. May 24, 1878 Mrs. J. H. Rainey and children, who have been visiting relatives in New Haven, Conn., returned home last Saturday. May 31, 1878 Prof. Hardin Price and wife of Monmouth, came down to visit their parents in this vicinity. Messrs. Edwin C. Ray of New York City and Benjamin F. Ray of Utica, NY, arrived here to visit their brother, Honorable William H. Ray. Miss Sarah Bagby has been visiting relatives in Kentucky. Mr. W. W. Wells of Chicago, came down to sell some property. June 7, 1878 Miss Tede Turner, who has been visiting her cousin, Mrs. William H. Ray, for about a years, left for her home in Memphis, Tennessee accompanied by her brother, William, who came to accompany her home. Littleton item: Felix Snyder and Edward Wells, Jr. left for California, planning to spend a year or two. June 14, 1878 Mr. Fred I. Hinckley of Aurora, Illinois is visiting friends and relatives in Rushville. Messrs. John and Paul Sweeney of Detroit, Michigan are visiting the old home this week. Camden item: Mr. I. G. Cady of Lockport, NY (Ohio), cousin of Dumford and Henry Cady of Camden, is visiting relatives here at present. June 21, 1878 Camden item: The I. G. Cady spoken of last week is from Ohio not New York as stated. Miss Lyde Knowles went to Independence, Kansas to visit relatives. Miss Katie McAllister, who has been visiting relatives in Kearny, Nebraska has returned to Rushville. Miss Lillie McCreary returned from Glendale, Ohio, where she had been teaching school. Mrs. J. R. Neill and daughter, Lillie left for Bonhomme, Dakota Territory, to visit her father, Dr. J. P. Richmond - Miss Lillie will remain to receive treatment from her grandmother. June 29, 1878 Mrs. James R. Davis of Dallas, Texas, arrived here to visit relatives. Miss Jennie Scripps went to Detroit, in company with Messrs. John and Paul Sweeney, who had been here visiting. Miss Emma Paige, who teaches at Oxford, Ohio Female College, returned home Saturday. Huntsville item: Mrs. F. E. Bryant of Bement, Illinois, is visiting her sisters, Mrs. Moore and Mead. Camden item: Mrs. Dr. B. P. Watts left to visit her parents at Warsaw, Illinois; Charley Andrus of Warsaw, was here visiting his sister, Mrs. B. P. Watts. July 5, 1878 Mrs. A. M. Nance of Clayton, removed to Rushville to reside with her father, Dr. Hubbard. Miss Anne Ramsey went to Tecumseh, Nebraska to spend the summer with her sister, Mrs. John Graff. Miss Libbie Beatty returned from Iowa where she had been visiting her aunt, Mrs. Hazlett. Honorable L. D. Erwin and daughter, Tillie went to visit a son, David, at Muskegum, Michigan. Mrs. Thomas Freeman of Freeman's Crossing, California with her sister-in-law, Mrs. Sarah Derrickson, of Rushville. Misses Caroline and Maria Moench, brother George, left to visit relatives in New York City. July 12, 1878 James E. Johnson of Ottowa, Illinois spent the 4th at his mother's near Pleasantview. July 19, 1878 Gilbert Ingraham, Jr. went to St. Louis to visit his aunt, Mrs. Dr. Vanzandt. Charles Wells and wife of Omaha, Nebraska, are here to visit his aged father, Mr. R. Wells. Letter from Kittie Winans - she is visiting her grandfather, William Wendle of Brooklyn, Michigan. Mr. Grover Ayers, student at Cornell University, was here visiting his brother, Dr. M. Ayers of this place. Ripley man gives account of ten BILL TAYLORS he knew in early days..... Samuel Davis, Esq. - born in Raleigh, North Carolina July 11, 1790 - prof. life spent in North and South Carolina and Tennessee - came to Illinois from Memphis, Tennessee in 1837 - has treated cancer cases in McDonough, Fulton and Schuyler ... August 2, 1878 Mrs. J. T. Sunderland, Chicago, is visiting her mother, Mrs. Reed. Huntsville item: Jackson Brothers of Macomb, formerly business men here, visited here. Henry Jones has removed to Denver, Illinois, where he will engage in barbering. August 9, 1878 Miss Martha Metz of Perry, Illinois, is in town visiting her uncle, Honorable G. W. Metz. John Bell of Chicago, son of William Bell, is in this city (Rushville) visiting his relatives and friends. George Guilliam, Lewistown, was here visiting his old stamping grounds. Messrs. William H. and Hal Lincoln accompanied by Miss Jessie Dehaven of Philadelphia, were in Rushville visiting their cousin, Mrs. Edgar Anderson. Mat. Dace, Rushville, George Korte, Bainbridge, James Bartlett of Camden, William Hightower, Littleton started for Nebraska to look over the country. Messrs. A. J. Terrill, Andrew Logsdon, and Steward Gaddis went overland, in a two-horse wagon, to look over southwest Kansas. August 16, 1878 Letter from Montana Territory, Helena - from J. P. Hedrick ... Judge John I. Campbell of Hannibal, Missouri, came to attend the funeral of his mother-in-law, Mrs. Stebbins. Mr. E. M. M. Clark of Lewistown, a resident here 20 years ago, was in Rushville last week. Miss Mattie Jackson is visiting relatives at Burnside, Illinois. Dr. R. Homer Mead leaves St. Louis the 9th - in charge of a large surveying party for the Pan handle of Texas, by way of Fort Dodge, Kansas. Public Sale: Mr. James Quinn, 1 mile north of Pleasantview. Mr. Conrad Smith just east of German Church - Woodstock. Mr. E. J. Trout, resident of Littleton. Above 3 parties expect to emigrate west. August 23, 1878 Letter from Keene, Nebraska - J. W. Wilmot - Franklin County, Nebraska - land all settled, bit land available west of Franklin. Mr. and Mrs. C. V. Magruder of Woodstock township, will leave next week for Cherokee, Kansas, to locate on their farm there. John Beatty, Jr. of Omaha, Nebraska, is visiting here. Mr. C. H. Cason, Topeka, Kansas, agent for Railroad, visiting his parents here. Huntsville items: Miss Hancock of Carthage, is visiting her uncle, Mr. John Robinson; Charles Everson, removed from Huntsville two years ago, went to Solomon River, Kansas - flood there. Richland - Miss Carrie Reddick visiting friends here after an absence of two years. August 30, 1878 Henry "Hank" Taylor of Burlington, Iowa, is here on a visit to his mother, Mrs. Elcy Taylor. Mr. Edward Young of Frederick township, leaves next week for Alabama, where he expects to locate. Miss Lillie Neill returned from Dakota Territory, where she has been visiting her grandfather, Dr. Richmond. Butlersville - Alexander Gregory started for Taylor County, Iowa, where he expects to locate. September 6, 1878 Dr. Stephens of St. Louis, who started his study in this place with Dr. Rogers in 1840, was visiting here - he holds position in O'Fallon Medical College. Mr. J. F. Sparks of Littleton township, departed with his family, for a farm in Carroll County, Missouri. Mr. Thomas J. Lair, who moved to Missouri last fall, is visiting here. Mr. Charles McCreery of Hannibal, Missouri, is here visiting his father, Samuel McCreery. Mr. Charles Sturgess, Scranton, PA, will fill a Rushville School vacancy - he is the step-son of Rev. I. W. Higgs. Mr. Thomas Warrington, formerly with the CITIZEN, now a student at Northwestern, visited old friends here. Peter Pugh of Frederick Mills, called. September 13, 1878 William Trout and family, Littleton township, left for Saline County, Nebraska, to make their home. Mr. James Quinn of near Pleasantview, leaves with his family, to make a home near Kearney, Nebraska. Mrs. Catherine Ewing dismissed from Jacksonville Insane Asylum. Virgil O. Ellis, son of James Ellis, declared insane - also Miss Louiza (Louisa?) Stutsman, age 30, Woodstock township. George W. Seubold, who resides on the Munroe farm, 2 1/2 miles west of town - selling out. September 20, 1878 John Miltonberger and his son-in-law, Thomas Sargent, left with their families to make their home in Saline County, Nebraska. Miss Josie Haskell of Amboy, Illinois is visiting her uncle, E. H. O. Seeley. September 27, 1878 Loren K. Wright and wife of Mt. Vernon, Missouri, are visiting relatives here, for the first time in many years. Edward Manlove of Cherokee, Kansas, is visiting here. Mr. John Shores, formerly a resident of this county, but for several years a resident of Nebraska, is here visiting, along with his new wife, former Miss Ruth Carter of Adams County. Mr. Charles Peter of Augusta called last week - his mother and brother, William, removed to Larned (Learned?), Kansas some time ago. Huntsville item: Mr. William Lewton's family and Mrs. Saylor's started this morning to go west. October 4, 1878 Huntsville item: Mark Cowdry went west. Rev. A. J. Mead ordered a piano shipped from Chicago to his only grandchild, Miss Cora Everson of Glen Elder, Kansas. October 4, 1878 REUNION OF AN OLD FAMILY (all born North Carolina): Mr. Emsley Jackson, Hancock County, age 67; John Jackson, Augusta, Illinois, age 81; two sisters from Bainbridge township: Sarah Hymer, age 85 and Anne Wright, age 69; Rev. George Jackson, Adams County, age 73; James Jackson, Morgan County, age 71; Joseph Jackson, Brown County, Indiana, died at age 72; the family originally consisted of 14 children, 12 lived to raise families - all brothers have buried their first wives - oldest brother, William, killed by a runaway team, in Morgan County at age 69 - Rev. George Jackson, Adams County, minister in United Brethren Church, preached in the Grist Schoolhouse Sunday. Mrs. D. M. Bellomy and 2 children of Crawford County, Kansas, visiting her father, George M. Greer near Pleasantview. Mrs. Frank Brown and children of Cherokee, Kansas are visiting their old home here. Mr. S. Blair, Woodstock township, left for Cass County, Missouri, where they expect to make their home. Messrs. Calvin, William and Alexander Newell of Woodstock township, departed on Wednesday for Nebraska. Morris Bagby went to Monmouth to take a course of lessons under Prof. Price, the well know music teacher. The following parties, with their families, left Browning (township), to take up residence in Kansas: William C. Venters, John L. Bader, Marsh Willard, Aug. Johnson, John Veterland, ? Jackson - they passed through Rushville Wednesday evening in their "Prairie Schooners". October 11, 1878 Mr. A. S. Kinnear, this vicinity, left with his family for Kearny County, Nebraska, where he has purchased a farm. Rev. J. B. Wolfe, minister here at M. E. Church for past 3 years, goes to Charleston, Missouri. Mr. J. M. Clark, dealer in musical instruments for past few years, left with his family for Hillsdale, Michigan, their old home. Miss Kizzie McMillen returned from her Kansas visit accompanied by her aunt, Mrs. Von Dissen of Lawrence. Mrs. R. H. Crump of Florida, Missouri, is visiting her sister, Mrs. Joseph Dyson.
