  In Memoriam 

This book is a memorial to the men of Schuyler County who made the supreme sacrifice.  They died through no lack of courage, skill or  training; for a blind fate singled out her victims.  A few breaths marked the boundary line between continued life and a death that wore many different disguised.  Yet they never faltered.  Simply, and without false heroics, they accomplished a heroic task.  Meither the greatness of their deeds nor the immensity of their country's deby can be measured by mere words.

Cunningham, Charles L.

  Staff Sergeant.
  Grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Boyles of Rushville.
  Charles was reported missing in action from a plane mission over Borneo on October 18, 1944.  He has since been declared officially dead.








Doyle, William Henry (Henry William)

  Corporal.
  Son of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Doyle of Rushville.
  Died April 28, 1945, of injuries received in action as a Rifleman on Guam.








French, George D.

Lieutenant.
  Brother of Mrs. William Bigham of Rushville.
  Died in a hospital in England May 13, 1944, as the result of wounds received while on a bombing mission over Germany.








Gillenwater, Gayle C.

  Staff Sergeant.
  Son of Mr. and Mrs. Ora Gillenwater of Rushville.
  Killed while performing his duty as top turret gunner on a B-17 on his first mission over Germany, December 8, 1943.
