Obituary for Marie Abigail Haley Irwin
Rushville Times, Wednesday, Oct. 6, 1999, page 15, column 4
Marie Irwin
Marie Abigail Irwin, 100, of Rushville, died Wednesday, Sept. 29, 1999, at the Snyder's Vaughn-Haven Nursing Home in Rushville.
She was born Feb. 22, 1899, in Brown County to the late Julius and Nancy Jane Seckman Haley.  She married Charles Augustus "Gussie" Irwin Feb. 11, 1919, at her parents' home in Brown County.  He died June 20, 1964.
Surviving are two sons, Charles Russell Irwin of Phoenix, Ariz., and Maurice Eugene Irwin of Rockford; one daughter, Mrs. Allen (Mary Jane) Busby of Rushville; seven grandchildren, Betty, Nancy and Dale Irwin, Karen Spring, Richard and Glen Irwin, and Scott Busby; four great-grandchildren, Joel and Caleb Furmanek, Ryan Irwin, Matthew Irwin and Alex Busby; one brother, Lawrence Haley of Liberty; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Ralph Haley; and two sisters, Myrtle Haley Whitson and Cecil Haley McGinley.
Marie attended the Byrnes School in Bowen County until 1917.
She was a member of the Salem Christian Church of Brown County, where she often played the piano for Sunday School and church.  She transferred her membership to the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Rushville in 1947.  Marie held the honor of being the oldest member of the congregation at the time of her death.
She was a homemaker in the truest sense of the word.  She loved her family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  As each one was born, she made them a quilt and an afghan, her way of saying to them, "You are special."  Her fingers were always busy creating quilt patterns, quilting those patterns as she completed them and crocheting doilies or rugs.  Her large vegetable and flower-garden was her pride and joy until her late eighties when her eye-sight failed.  She was not inclined to travel or visit, however her home was always open and welcome to everyone, with a listening ear, a fresh slice of bread from the oven spread with fresh churned butter and sugar or jam, or a portion of warm pie.  She always loved a good conversation, good church music, an exchange of recipes, and sent you on your way with a jar filled with something from the pantry shelf.
She saw many changes in this century.
Funeral services were held Friday at the Worthington Funeral Home in Rushville with Rev. Scott Henley officiating.  Burial was in the Rushville City Cemetery.
Memorials are suggested to the Snyder's Vaughn-Haven Nursing Home or the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), both of Rushville.

Obituary for Dora "Ruth" Ruth Jackson
Rushville Times, July 5, 1917
Many hearts were saddened Sunday evening when the news went out that the death angel had entered the home of Mrs. Phoebe Jackson and the beautiful spirit of her youngest daughter, Ruth, had returned to God who gave it.
Ruth's childhood days were spent in Rushville, where she grew to young womanhood, possessed with a beautiful Christian character that endeared her to everyone who was permitted to know her.
Funeral services, conducted by her pastor, Rev. D. V. Gowdy, were held from her late home on Tuesday afternoon, after which the remains of this dear girl were laid to rest in the city cemetery.
Dora Ruth, daughter of Horatio O. and Phoebe Noble Jackson, was born May 19, 1881, and for 36 years was a comfort and blessing to her family and friends.
Early in life she gave herself to her Savior and united with the Methodist Church. For many years she sang in the choir and was helpful in all good works so far as her strength would allow. She was always frail and three years ago became an invalid, but proved that the blessed religion of Christ can bring courage and cheerfulness even thru pain and the wasting of disease.
She endeared herself to all who knew her and became more and more precious to her family, until July 1, 1917, her Lord siad, "It is enough! Come!" and our Ruth left all pain, all weakness for eternal joy, eternal life and strength. For her we can only rejoice, but alas! she leaves her mother, two brothers, Charles at home and Robert, of Canton; a sister, Mrs. Nellie Applegate; an aunt, Mrs. Dora Ruth Tetrick, and other near and dear relatives and friends. May their hearts be comforted!

Obituary for Bertha Margaret Gillenwater Ashwood
Rushville Times, February 12, 1936
In Memoriam
Mrs. Horace Ashwood
Bertha Margaret Gillenwater, eldest daughter of John W. and Susan Gillenwater, was born Nov. 15, 1874, on a farm two miles northeast of Rushville.  She attended the Sugar Grove country school and later the Rushville Union school and Kennedy's Normal and Business college.  For several years she was one of Schuyler county's successful teachers.  She was a woman of high ambitions and lofty ideals, and in her school life she endeavored to attain a high degree of scholarship.
On Jan. 23, 1897, she was united in marriage to Horace Ashwood, and to this union was born one daughter, Hildreth, who is now the wife of Vernon Barnes, and who, with the three grandchildren, Byron, Barbara Jean and Marilyn, has ever been a source of inspiration and the pride and joy of her mother.
At the age of seventeen years she was converted in a revival conducted by Rev. J. B. Horney, and joined the Methodist Episcopal church of this city.  Her devotion to her church was secondary only that of her family, and her regularity in attendance and active interest in its welfare were not diminished until physical disability ended her activity in the work she loved.
After an illness of two and one-half years, during which there was much suffering, she passed calmly and peacefully to rest on the morning of February 4th, with her hand on the Holy Bible.  As her life slowly ebbed away, she said, "I love everybody", and with a steady unfaltering look into the future whispered, "I will be better in the morning."
Mrs. Ashwood was an active church worker, being at one time secretary of the Foreign Missionary society, president of her Sunday school class, and for many years was teacher of one of the largest classes  in the Sunday school.  She was vitally interested in the civil affairs of her community, and served for a time as vice-president  of the Woman's Federation.
She leaves a husband bereft in his declining years of loyal and faithful companionship, the above mentioned daughter and grandchildren, and the following brothers and sisters: Mrs. Grace Lucas and Mrs. Linn Landon of Galesburg, Ill., Mrs. Marie Craycraft of Windsor, Ill., Mrs. Mamie Brown and George Gillenwater of DeLong, Ill., and John C. Gillenwater of Abingdon, Ill.
During her last illness she was constantly cared for by her husband and daughter, assisted by Mrs. Flora Harrod, and their devotion and tender care did much to alleviate her suffering and brighten her declining days.

Obituary for Horace Robert Ashwood
Rushville Times, January 15, 1948
Horace Ashwood, Aged 83, Passed Away Thursday
Horace Ashwood, one of Schuyler county's most extensive landowners, passed away at his home here last Thursday morning, following an illness of about a year.
Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the First Methodist church, with Rev. H. S. Crede officiating.  Burial was in the Rushville cemetery.
Horace Robert Ashwood, son of Joseph and Julia Ann Harding Ashwood, was born in Adams county, Illinois, December 19, 1864, and departed this life January 8, 1948, at the age of 83 years and 20 days.
At an early age he, with his parents, came to Schuyler county, where they established their home in Browning township.
Horace was the youngest of five sons and two daughters born to this pioneer family, all of whom preceded him in death.  Theirs was a home where christian principles were paramount and daily practiced.  Their example helped establish and maintain the standards of the community.  Horace grew to manhood in the simple surroundings of that period, where the children found pleasure in the simple things of life, the accounts of which have been recounted many times to the delight of the children of the next generation, to whom he was a companion who knew no age.  He attended the country school and Kennedy's Normal.  His was a keen mind which served him until the end.  His council and advice had been sought by many, and has been given so wisely and unselfishly.
As the older children married, and one by one established homes of their own, Horace remained to take charge of the farm, and, after the death of his father in 1897, managed the affairs of his mother.  After his marriage, when he moved to Rushville, and when his mother was persuaded to leave the farm, he had a home built near his own, where after visiting around with the other children she could come home to be near her youngest.
On January 23, 1897, Horace Ashwood was united in marriage to Bertha Gillenwater.  To this union was born one daughter, Hildreth, wife of Vernon Barnes.  They, with their three children, Byron, Barbara Jeanne, and Marilyn, have a great heritage in a life so well spent.  Mrs. Ashwood passed away February 4, 1936, leaving a void in the life of her husband.
Mr. Ashwood was converted over 40 years ago in a meeting in Rushville, and joined the Methodist church, where he took an active interest in the Sunday school and church services.  His principles were high and he continually tried to lead others in the way of life eternal.  His life is not lost for it remains in the lives of many.
Mr. Ashwood suffered a paralytic stroke in February of last year, and after almost a year of illness passed away at his home in Rushville, leaving great sorrow among his loved ones.

Obituary for Marietta "Rose" Rose Ashcraft Ashwood
Rushville Times, October 11, 1933
Last Rites Held Saturday For Mrs. John Ashwood
Mrs. John Ashwood, life-long resident of Schuyler county, died Wednesday evening at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Gertrude Peck, in Buenavista township, following a stroke of paralysis suffered a few days previous.
Funeral services, conducted by Rev. Homer Tanner, a former pastor of the Free Methodist church, were held Saturday afternoon from the First M. E. church in Rushville.  Interment was made in the family lot in the Pittenger cemetery near Ray.
Marietta Ashcraft, daughter of Abner and Sarah Ashcraft, was born near Ray, Jan. 23 1858 and departed this life Oct. 4, 1933, aged 75 years, 8 months and 11 days.
On Feb. 28, 1877, she was united in marriage to John W. Ashwood who survives.  To this union were born seven children. One child, Charles Franklin, preceded her in death at the age of two years.
The deceased was joyously converted in the great revival at Ray in 1875 and for all these years was a true and faithful Christian.  Over fifty-eight years ago she sought and obtained the experience of entire sanctification and professed and exemplified the experience unto the end of her life.
She was a sister of the late Rev. F. H.
