Obituary for Elizabeth C. Garrett Kruse
Rushville Times, May 29, 1919
The death of Mrs. Elizabeth Kruse, widow of the late F. H. D. Kruse, on last Saturday, brought to an end a remarkable life whose youth, fullness and old age was spent on the farm where she resided for more than seventy-five years. With her passing there comes a break in the five generations of this family, there surviving two great great grandchildren. Mrs. Kruse lived to the ripe old age of ninety-four years and retained her faculties to a remarkable degree and her death removes probably the last of the pioneers who settled near Rushville in the thirties. On Monday afternoon funeral services were held at the old homestead, four miles east of Rushville, conducted by Rev. W.E. Dudley of Charleston, Ill. Interment in the Rushville cemetery.
Elizabeth C. Garrett, daughter of Thos. I. and Susan Garrett was born at Georgetown, Russell Co., KY, April 16, 1825; departed this life at the old home, two miles east of Rushville, May 24, 1919, at the ripe old age of 94 years, 1 month and8 days.  In the year 1836 her father's family, in company with the family of the late Jonathan Patterson, moved to Schuyler county, coming down the Columbia and Ohio rivers in a flat boat and up the Illinois river by steamboat, landing at old Eric, between Beardstown and Frederick. With the exception of two years in McDonough county she has been a continued resident of Schuyler county. She was united in marriage with the late F. H. D. Kruse Dec. 3, 1843, who preceded her to the great beyond July 4th, 1899. The day following their marriage they went to housekeeping in a cabin in the woods, at which place she has lived continuously ever since, a period of a little more than 75 years. To this union was born seven children, one son dying in infancy; Mary Ellen dying after reaching young womanhood and George W. at the age of 65 years. Four yet remain to mourn the loss of a true and loving mother, viz: Jas. K. Polk of Milsap, Texas, Henry of Brady, Texas: Susan H. wife of M. W. Greer and Dora K. widow of the late Jas. T. Mathews; also fifteen grandchildren, eighteen great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren. Mother Kruse came of a long lived family, her mother and oldest brother each living to the age of 92 years. She was a woman of remarkable constitution and endurance and outlived by many years all of the pioneer settlers in her community and is the last of her father's family of eight children, all of whom lived to be heads of families.

Obituary for George W. Kruse
Rushville Times, September 10, 1914
Geo. W. Kruse, son of Franz H. D. and Elizabeth Kruse, was born on the home farm, two miles east of Rushville, May 3d, 1849, and departed this life at Conrath, Wis., Sept. 2, 1914, aged 65 years, 3 months and 29 days.
He was the third child of a family of seven children, four of whom are yet living, viz: Jas. K. Polk, of Millsap, Texas; Franz Henry of Brady, Texas; Susan H. Greer of Rushville, Ill., and Dora K. Mathews of Guthrie, Okla. His aged mother still survives and is now in her 90th year.
He was united in marriage to Maggie McKee Nov. 16, 1870, by whom he is still survived. To this union was born four children--Ora M. Carpenter of Coalmont, Ind.; Mrs. Orpha Lowe, now in Colorado; Mrs. Maggie Higby and Elza of Conrath, Wis. After getting thru with the country schools he spent some time at Eureka College in order to fit himself for the business of teaching, which occupation he engaged in very successfully for a number of years. Later on he accepted a clerkship in the hardware store of the late Aug. Nell {a year}. Afterward he conducted a grocery store in Rushville for some few years, since which time he has been principally engaged in farming.
In early life he made a profession of religion and accepted Christ as his savior, and altho, like many others, there were times in his life that he did not live up to and enjoy the full measure of the christian life, yet at the close he felt no fears and died in the full assurance of a blessed immortality.
Mr. Kruse was a man of more than ordinary intelligence, and very emphatic and decided in his convictions, ever ready to defend what he believed to be the truth and oppose that which he regarded as error.
Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the home of Martin W. Greer, who resides about two miles east of Rushville. The services were conducted by Rev. Fred Wilson, pastor of the Christian church of Rushville; and by request of deceased Mr. Greer made a short talk. Interment in the Rushville cemetery.

Obituary for Albert Brown Lawler
Rushville Times, February 20, 1913
A. B. Lawler
  A. B. Lawler, the last surviving member of the older generation of a family that has been prominent in Schuyler county from pioneer times, died at his home south of Rushville on Thursday of last week. Born in Schuyler in 1840, Mr. Lawler made his home in Bainbridge the greater part of the time since then, and was a man prominent in local and county affairs.
On Saturday morning at 11 o'clock funeral services were held at the family home, conducted by Rev. Fred Wilson, and the interment was in the Lawler cemetery. The following obituary has been furnished the Times:
Albert Brown Lawler was born on a farm seven miles southeast of Rushville, June 10, 1840, and died at his late residence in Bainbridge township, two and one-half miles south of Rushville, Feb. 13, 1913, aged 72 years, 8 months and 3 days.
Among the scenes and hardships of early pioneer days he grew to manhood on the farm settled upon by his parents, James and Nancy Lawler, who immigrated from Fauquir county, Virginia, in 1835. He was the youngest and last survivor of a family of six children.
Deceased was well educated, having received his early training in the common schools of Schuyler county. He studied law for a time under the instruction of Judge Johnston, after which he attended Davis and Tipton's Commercial college in Peoria, from which he graduated. On his return in 1860 he again studied law with Judge Johnston, remaining with him about a year and a half. He finished his law reading with Mr. Morgan of Macomb, and was admitted to the bar in 1863.
In 1865 he went to Brownville, Neb., and there entered into a law partnership with E. W. Thomas, formerly of Charleston, S.C. He later returned to Schuyler county, and was married March 4, 1869, to Miss Josephine Lawler, who survives him, together with eight children - Hugh, Howard and Lizzie, at home; Eppa of Gooby, S.D.; Claude of Amarillo, Texas; Mrs. Myrtle Howell and Mrs. Eloise Grimwood of Rushville and Patrick of Menahga, Minn. Two children, Winifred and Clinton, died in infancy. All of his surviving children excepting Eppa were at his bedside at the time of his death. He also leaves twelve grandchildren, together with a host of relatives and friends to mourn their loss.
Altho Mr. Lawler had not been very rugged for a number of years he had been enjoying fairly good health until the time when taken with the sudden illness a few days prior to his death. All that a loving wife, children, kind relatives and friends could do was done in vain.
Mr. Lawler was not affiliated with any church organization, but believed in God and thruout his life, by many deeds of kindness, testified to his belief in the teachings of Christ, and it can truthfully be said that his life on this earth has caused no one to suffer or feel the pinch of want. These and the many generous acts testify to the "Fatherhood of God" and the "Brotherhood of Man." Always believing in the existence of a soul and a life beyond the grave, he never expressed a fear of death, passing to that great beyond as peacefully and calmly as men do whose lives have been guided by the principles of right and justice to their fellowmen, and their love and respect for a supreme being.
