Obituary for Fred David Patton
Fred Patton Is Drowned In Crooked Creek
Tragedy Occurs Near Brooklyn Sunday Eve
Fred David Patton, 17-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Patton of Littleton township, was drowned late Sunday afternoon in Crooked creek near the abandoned bridge on the George Walker place, two and one-half miles southeast of Brooklyn.
Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon in the Methodist church at Littleton, with Rev. Corbin Stambaugh and Rev. Charles Conlee in charge. Burial was in the Littleton cemetery.
The accident occurred when Fred and his elder brother, Hugh, who is on furlough from the army, and Miss Wanda Johnson of Pleasant View, were playing around one of the two boats which were tied near the bridge. Both the boys were in the water and holding on to the sides of the boat, while Miss Johnson was seated in the boat.
Fred was at the end of the boat and let loose to swim, apparently the strong current took him under. He came up very quickly several feet farther downstream, according to testimony given at the inquest Monday morning at the Gordon Funeral home. Hugh said he could tell that his brother was in trouble, but he was unable to handle himself in the water and could do nothing to assist. Fred disappeared under the water, and Hugh and Miss Johnson made use of the boat in an attempt to locate him with a pole before going for help. Sheriff Ernest Andre and State Patrolman Hal Ewing were notified of the accident, and along with Eugene Lawler began an intensive search of the waters about 8:30. The officers used poles and hooks, while Mr. Lawler made repeated dives into the water. Mr. Lawler came up with the body about 10 o'clock, at a point about 30 feet from the boats, in water about five and one-half feet deep.
An inquest was conducted Monday morning by Coroner V. M. Corman, at which time testimony of Hugh Patton, Miss Johnson, and Lewis T. Shores was heard. Mr. Shores was first to arrive at the scene following the call for help. After hearing the testimony, the jury brought in a verdict of accidental death by drowning. The jury was composed of Jerry Bowers, foreman, Leroy Logan, Ralph Wilheim, Lloyd Root, D. W. Davis, and Harold Strong.
Fred David Patton, third and youngest son of Frank J. and Bessie M. Stambaugh Patton, was born in Rushville, September 8, 1931and departed this life July 10, 1949, being just 17 years, 10 months, and two days of age.
The last 15 years of his life was spent in Littleton township where he attended White Frame school for eight years, graduating alone in 1945 as the last graduate of that school.
He leaves to mourn his passing his parents; two brothers, Hugh, a member of the U.S. air force, now stationed at Rantoul, and Albert of Jacksonville; also several aunts, uncles, and cousins, and a host of friends.
His cheerful disposition and pleasant wit made him liked by all who knew him. He was industrious trustworthy, and ambitious. He was a kind-hearted friend and a loving son and brother.

Obituary for Tabitha D. Walters Pittenger
died: February 15, 1907
In Memoriam, Tabitha Pittenger
Sunday, Feb. 17th, at the Old Salem Chapel west of town, occurred funeral services of Mrs. Tabitha D. Pittenger, the oldest of the early pioneers of Astoria township and of Fulton county. We can think of only three of her early friends who are remaining, Mrs. J. Wilson, Mrs. D. Corbett, and Mrs. Wm. Rose. Mrs. Pittenger was of the sturdy stock who came early to Illinois to measure out their life-b??? into the soil, and from it has spr??? up this splendid citizenship and gre?? ?? wealth which is our heritage to-day. God bless the old settlers who came, saw and conquered.
Tabitha D. Watlers-Pittenger {Walters-Pittenger} came to Sangamon county, Ill., at two years of age. She was born in Tennessee.
Joshua Moore, her grandfather, and John Walters, her father, brought their families from Tennessee to Canton, Ill. in 1828.
The wigwam and wolf, with the redman and rattlesnake, were to be seen on every hand. The Black Hawk war in 1832, made the Walters children orphans, and when but mere lass Tabitha went to the loom to help care for the younger children, of whom there were three.
This old citizen saw the change from the days when they lived on parched corn, hominy and wild meat to the present high pressure spreed {speed?} of pressing the button and "everything comes." She was familiar with Cartright, Lee and Walker and knew all the Haneys and Rutleges, men of the early M. ? {E.} church which she joined when a child. That was at the old Moore's chapel, the first church built in Fulton county, Ill., in 1829.
Mrs. Pittenger was a charter member of Salem chapel, and in 1873 joined the U. B. church.
In 1846 she was married to ? { B. or P.} P. Pittenger. Forty three years they lived on the old farm where their eleven children were born, and where her hands toiled to care for three or??? {orphan} ?? ??. Her husband had ? son by a former wife. This boy, William, was loved as her own child. Mother Pittenger was never too weary to rise and give the cup of cold water, nor to make the garment nor to visit and care for the sick. Her energy seemed inexhaustible; her will indomentable {indomitable} and she was always going about doing good. Ten of her family have greeted her on the other side. They went before and they are with God, while five remain to await the summons to go to the final reunion. Those left are: Mrs. Harriet Campbell, of Browning, Abraham, of Smithfield, Ill., Rev. Thos. Pittenger, of Momence, Ill., Charley ?? of ?chfield, Mo., and Nora ?? ??, Ill. …
Note: found in a scrapbook in Roswell, New Mexico by Nancy Harvey while going though her mother's things after her death. "The scrapbook is one which my great grandmother, Amanda Bryan Wetzel, or perhaps my grandmother, Nettie Wetzel Dean, pasted lots of obituaries of family and friends. These families were from around McDonough, Fulton and Schuyler Counties. These obits are probably around a hundred years old or may be more."
Note: Tabitha D., born October 03, 1824, was married to Peter Pittenger, born 1815, died August 30, 1887 and they are buried in Salem Cemetery, Astoria Township, Fulton County, Illinois.

Obituary for Anna Marie Rohn Rausch
Old Citizen
Mrs. Anna Marie Rausch an old and a highly respected resident of Beardstown died early this morning at her home, 1212 Jefferson Street, after a lingering illness.
Anna Marie Rohn, was born in Ruppeltrof, Hesse Darmstadt, Germany, April 2nd, 1838, and died in Beardstown, Thursday, Feb. 21, 1924, aged 85 years, 9 months, and 19 days.
Coming to America with her parents in 1841, Mrs. Rausch has been a resident of this city for more than four score years. On September 5th, 1895, she was married to Henry Rausch of the city. To this union 11 children were born, five of whom with the husband and father preceded the mother in death. Mr. Rausch was killed on February 21, 1883, his wife therefore survived exactly 41 years.
Left with a large family of children Mrs. Rausch bravely bore many heavy burdens, and endeavored to take the place of both and mother. With a firm and unfaltering faith in God, she reared her family and has bequeathed to her children that memory of a pure, unselfish self-sacrificing and devoted mother.
After rearing her own children she also took the place of mother to several mother less grandchildren.
She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Lena Zeigelmeier of Gem, Kansas, and five sons, William of University Place, Lincoln, Nebraska; Fred of Pittsburgh, PA, Benjamin of East St. Louis, Henry and Hugo, both of this city, besides a large number of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and a host of friends.
For several years she has made her home for the greater part of the time with her son-in-law, William Wise, taking the place of a mother to his motherless daughters and being in turn loved and cared for by them. They with other granddaughters, and loving relatives, have tenderly cared for her during her weeks and months of illness.
Grandma Rausch has been for many years a faithful and value member of the Congregational church. A woman of strong character, an earnest Christian, her faith was unfaltering and she held faster principles, and high ideals. She was especially gifted in prayer and as long as she was able attended all services of the church, helping so far as she could in every good work.
She was a charter member of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union organized many years ago, and was all her life a loyal worker in the "temperance" cause.
Arrangements for the funeral have not yet been completed, but will be announced tomorrow.
  {I believe that this clipping came from a 1924 Beardstown newspaper. The copy of the clipping that I have does not contain the name of the paper. This I have inferred due to the content of the actual clipping.}
