Obituary of Amanda M. Howell Allison
The Schuyler Citizen, February 15, 1872
DIED
Allison - In Mt. Sterling, Illinois, on the 30th of January, of lung fever and heart disease, after an illness of five days, Mrs. Amanda M. Allison, daughter of Thomas and S. C. Howell.
She was converted in 1860 and united with the Methodist church, and lived a consistent Christian life till called away by death. She had been a resident of Kansas for five years, and came home some ten months since on account of ill health. She was visiting friends in Mt. Sterling when stricken down. In all her suffering she gave bright evidence of her acceptance with Christ. The day before her death she sent for the minister and expressed her willingness to die and be at rest. She leaves a husband in Kansas, father, mother, brothers, sisters and a large circle of friends to mourn her loss; but we mourn not as those who have no hope.
"I know thou art gone to the home of they rest,
Then why should my soul be so sad?
I know thou art gone where they weary are blest,
And the mourner looks up and is glad.

"I never look up with a wish to the sky
    But a light like thy beauty is there;
And I hear a low murmur like thine in reply
When I pour out my spirit in prayer."

Obituary of Florence "Corene" Corene Ellis Alters
The Rushville Times, November 1946
Mrs. Clifford Alters Died Early Tuesday Morning
Mrs. Corene Alters, wife of Clifford Alters, passed away at her home in Rushville, on Tuesday at 12:30 a.m., following a lingering illness.
Funeral services were held Wednesday at 2:30 p.m., at the Lawler funeral home, conducted by Rev. M. P. Pierson. Burial was in the Rushville cemetery.
The following obituary was read at the service:
Florence Corene Ellis, daughter of Arthur and Anna Tutt Ellis, was born on a farm north of Rushville, August 30, 1896, and passed away at her home in Rushville at 12:15 on the morning of November 12, 1946, aged 50 years, two months and 12 days.
When the daughters were ready for high school, the parents moved from their country home to Rushville, where Corene was a good student, and much loved by all her teachers. In 1922 her only sister, Eva, sickened and died, and in just three short years the mother was also called home. This was a sad blow to the father and Corene.
On July 10, 1924, Corene became the happy bride of Clifford Alters, and to this union were born two sons, Marcellus M. and Donnie M.
She was a member of the First Christian church, and the Loyal Sons and Daughters Sunday school class. At the time of her untimely death she was serving as a member of the active committees of the class. Never was the task assigned her in her church too much, and she did all in her power to see her part successfully taken care of.
As secretary of the Sunshine club for several years, she was ever interested in entertainment and good programs, and here she will be sorely missed.
Corene had been a constant sufferer for the past year, yet at no time did she ever fail to plan for the future.
Beside the father, husband and two sons, she leaves a devoted mother-in-law, who in loving kindness cared for her thru all the days of her illness.
Her family, her relatives and many friends will always think of Corene as a lovable daughter, a devoted wife, an interested mother, and one of whom all can say, "to know her was to love her." Her many good traits will long live in the hearts of all with wom she came in contact.

Death Notice for Moses Ames
The Rushville Times, March 27, 1857
Moses Ames - Died on Monday the 22nd inst., in this place, Moses, infant son of D. S. and Clarissa Ames.

Obituary of C. P. Anderson
The Rushville Times, April 3, 1875, Camden Inklings - March 30
On last Thursday at 10 o'clock, Mr. C. P. Anderson of this vicinity, died of erysipelas, after an illness of 12 days. The burial took place next day at 1 o'clock, which was very largely attended notwithstanding the roads were in a terrible condition. Funeral will be preached at some future time.
The deceased leaves three grownup children; one daughter and two sons - one of whom is absent in Texas - who in this their sore affliction, have the heart felt sympathy of the entire community.
Mr. Anderson was born in Hamilton County, Ohio, on the 25th day of March, 1820, consequently he lacked but one day of having lived 55 years.
He moved to this county in the year 1839, and lived the first three years in Rushville, thence he moved to this neighborhood, where he lived until his death.
On the 14th of June, 1843, he was married to Miss Lucinda Cady, who died September 16, 1867.
For the last nine years he was one of the leading members of the Christian Church of this place, holding the office of Elder from its organization. In his death his children suffer the irreparable loss of a kind and indulgent father, the church loses one of its best and most useful members, and his place in the community will be hard to fill.
Death of Maria W. Moore Anderson
The Schuyler Citizen, February 29, 1872

The Schuyler Citizen, March 14, 1872
Letter from Mr. Todhunter.
  Peoria, Ill., March 7th, 1872.
Editor Citizen: The CITIZEN brings the sad news of the death of an old and valued friend, Mrs. James L. Anderson. Scenes of by-gone days crowd thick and fast on my memory as I read that mournful page. The family, of which her late lamented husband J. L. Anderson was the head, were among my early friends in Rushville. No common friends, but such as I could grapple to my heart with hooks of steel. I might tell of many happy hours we have spent together with other friends, many of whom I shall see no more on earth, but these scenes of bygone days will remain fresh and green in my memory until my ashes shall mingle with theirs.
I knew Mrs. Anderson well. She was a woman of noble impulses and, like her husband, always a generous friend in sunshine and in storm. Rushville owes much to her memory. She was a lady in every sense of the word; and no one contributed more than she did toward modeling society in good morals and refinement. Love for the beautiful was a prominent trait in her character. Surrounded as she was by the choicest plants and flowers which she cultivated with a skillful hand, they seemed almost a part of her self, so closely were they entwined with her nature. Let them be cherished and protected from the winter frosts, and kept as mementoes of her, whose eyes loved to look upon them, now that those eyes are closed forever. She needs them no more. She has gone to a land where flowers never fade; to a land where no untimely frosts can nip the buds, and where disappointment and sorrow will be no more.
As friend after friend disappears from the busy stage of life, I am forcibly reminded that I, too, must soon follow them. A few more months or years, at most, and I, in turn, will be numbered with the dead. Few remain in Rushville who formed society in the dear old days of "auld lang syne," and the time will soon be when an old settler will not tread its streets. I love to call to memory those scenes of by-gone days; the clouds that sometimes hung over us then, are fast fading away, while the sunshine of those happy years will remain engraven on my heart until its beatings are stilled in death.
The little privations incident to the settlement of a new country were blessings in disguise. They had a tendency to make us feel our dependence on one another and bind us more closely together in the tenderest and sweetest tie, that of friendship. But as link after link is broken, and tie after tie is severed, let the old settlers not be forgotten. The beautiful trees that adorn your streets, and the shrubbery around your homesteads, were left as a legacy. Then while they afford grateful shelter to your children, teach them to love the memory of those who planted them there. Let them learn to protect them for the sake of those whose hands are powerless now.
  O, woodman, spare that tree!
  Touch not a single bough,
  In youth it sheltered me,
  And I'll protect it now.
  'Twas my forefather's hand
  That placed it near our cot;
  So, woodman, let it stand,
Thy axe shall harm it not.
