A Scoundrel in Trouble for Defrauding a Crippled Girl.
Wichita, Kan., May 26 - Jyhn (sic) Seemon, forger and embezzler, and Kate Berry, his confederate, were arrested yesterday and started last evening for Scott county, Ills., to answer for their crime. About a year ago Henry McCloskey died near Winchester, Scott county, Ilss., and left about $2,000 to his crippled daughter Mary. Shortly after the death of her father, Mary was approached by Seemon, an old family friend, who offered his services in the conduct of her business.
Stole Her Little Fortune
No sooner had Seemon wormed out of the girl the information he wanted, than he forged her name to a power of attorney, drew all her fortune out of the bank and absconded, leaving a wife and family behind, and taking as his companion in flight, Kate Berry, wife of a neighbor and a half-sister of the girl he had robbed. The couple have spent most of the past year in Fort Smith, Ark., but arrived here a week ago. They admit their guilt. [Rock Island Daily Argus. (Rock Island, Ill.), 26 May 1891]
