1885 Spring Picnic for District Number Five School
The Bradford Republican, Thursday, June 25, 1885
The scholars of school district number five, Miss Jennie Evans teacher, has a very enjoyable afternoon last Saturday. It being near the close of the spring term of school, a picnic party was projected and successfully carried out at the residence of Mrs. P. McManus. The children had the use of a large orchard, which furnished a beautiful shade. The patrons of the school brought in a bountiful supper, which was served in the shade of the trees. An organ, violin, and vocal music, with the assistance of a portion of the Bradford Band, served to enliven, amuse and heighten the pleasure of those present. It is such occasions as this which serves to attract the children and make their school lives the most enjoyable part of their existence. The elder ones, we notice, were fully as much entertained as the younger portion of the community. We are requested by the teacher to tender thanks to many who, while not patrons of the school, by their kindness and presence, served to make the picnic a success.
