JOSEPH GUNSAUL
He is the son of Joseph Gunsaul, His father was born on 4th Dec 1715 in Kingston, Ulster, New York, He moved the family to Saratoga New York where there were few white men. His was killed by Indians on 1 Apr 1782 in Saratoga, New York. His brother John and a hired man were captured and taken prisoners to Canada by the Indians. Joseph was only 12 at the time. He was also captured but managed to escape. His mother is Margaret Deutscher, she was born between 1715 - 1735. When the War of 1812 broke out, his he moved his family to Amsterdam, New York where he engaged in merchantile business. After a few years he traded his stock of goods for a farm and hotel on the Mohawk river 2 miles East of Amsterdam. In 1835 he sold out and moved back to Schenectady. He kept only the North Hall Boarding House which was connected with the Union College. In 1853, He moved West to Stephenson County to be near his son Samuel. He died 5 years later in Winslow, Illinois. His wife Mary Manny was born in Montgomery County New York. Her parents were of French descent.

He married Mary Manny, the daughter of Gabriel Manny 11 Mar 1740 - 28 May 1808 & Mary Merritt 18 Mar 1746 - 9 Mar 1828.
