Suggestion Made by Secretary Smith Meets with Favor.
Dedicate Two Plots
William Trembor Gives historical Sketch and H. F. Aspinwall Makes Address
Dedication of the Laurel Ridge and Morningside plots at Oakland cemetery on Sunday brought with it the suggestion of the appropriateness of holding memorial exercises annually on the day of the dedication of the cemetery, the suggestion of Owen T. Smith, secretary of the association, meeting with the general approval of the officers and directors. Mr. Smith feels that the memorial day for the old soldiers coming on May 30, is for their exclusive service, and should not be interfered with by individuals or other societies at that time. He considers it far more appropriate for citizens to join with the Grand Army men and assist in decorating the graves of deceased soldiers, but the citizens should not at that time make it an occasion to outdo themselves and decorate family plots, to the exclusion of the meaning of memorial day to the soldiers. The plan of Mr. Smith will no doubt be adopted y the Oakland Cemetery association, the exercises to be held annually on the second Sunday in June, unless circumstances make it advisable to change the date. There was a large attendance at the dedication exercises. The Laurel Ridge plot has been set aside as a burial place that will be free of monuments, the directors feeling that there is a growing sentiment to do away with monuments. All that will mark the grave will be a slab laid over the resting place of the deceased. The invocation was given by the Rev. D. L. McNary of the First Presbyterian church. The Wagner quartette gave the "Priest's March" followed by the selection, "Crossing the Bar," by the Imperial Male quartette. An historical sketch of Oakland was presented by William Trembor. The Wagner quartette followed with two selections. Hon. Homer F. Aspinwall gave an address, and the close was a selection by the Imperial Male quartette. Mr. Trembor's paper was as follows"
Mr. Chairman, ladies and gentlemen:
In the fall of 1901 several gentlemen met and discussed the matter of a cemetery for our city. It at once met with approval and on November 1 of that year, articles of incorporation were secured, as were the beautiful grounds you now see. But not in their present condition. We were fortunate in securing Mr. Symonds, and experienced landscapist in charge of one of the largest cemeteries in Chicago, who laid out the grounds and his design has been and is being followed at every step. Rules and regulations of course had to be adopted which to some of our good people, who had been accustomed to adopt and follow their own plans in enclosing and adorning their lots elsewhere were perhaps somewhat onerous, but I am pleased to say that with but few exceptions, after seeing what is being accomplished, those who have secured lots cheerfully adopted the views of our directors and superintendent. Over sixty acres have been improved. You see the result around you. We still have about forty acres of unimproved ground which to the landscapist afforded and will add much more beauty to those already improved and the work will continue until all is a work of beauty and one in which we can all take even much more pride that we now do. I wish to impress upon those present that this project was not entered into by the interested parties as a money-making scheme. For twelve years every dollar received from the sale of stock and lots was put back into the grounds in the way of improvements . During the past two years dividends of four and six percent respectfully have been paid to the capital stock of $25,000 - you will perceive it is not watered. A certain portion of the receipt from the sale of lots is placed in the hands of trustees, not directors, as a fund to be used only for the perpetual care of the grounds. How well this care is attended to is apparent. Every section is treated in the same way. Four men and sometimes more are constantly employed during the spring, summer and fall months in this work. The price of lots is so graded that those of most moderate means can secure lots and in the same localities as are the most expensive. This is a cemetery for all classes and conditions of people. It is indeed gratifying that so many of our neighboring farmers have secured lots. The total amount invested in the ground to the present time is between $65,000 and $75,000, and the end is not yet by far. When proposed improvements are completed in the laying out and adorning of the ground as yet untouched, the excavating for and artificial lake, the building of artistic bridges, the improvement of the shore of Yellow Creek, all of which work is in contemplation and will steadily progress, we will still more than now be able to say that our city has a cemetery which for location and beauty is not equaled in this country.
