Four Cars Involved - Other Passengers Slightly Hurt
Mishap on Highway Half Mile North of Freeport

From the Freeport Journal 9 May 1938

In an automobile crash involving four cars, Lorraine Ashenfelter, 18, a member of Freeport high school graduating class and a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Ashenfelter, Davis, was fatally hurt about 1:15 o'clock Sunday morning. The crash took place on route 26, about half a mile north of Freeport. Miss Ashenfelter incurred a broken neck and did at Deaconess hospital a short time after being taken there. Four other persons were hurt, none seriously. Charles B. King Jr. 18 of 803 South Float avenue, driver of the car in which Miss Ashenfelter was riding, sustained numerous bruises and cuts about the legs and hips. Leroy Kleckner, 22, South Float avenue, driver of one of the other machines, suffered cuts on the forehead and minor bruises, while Charles Wachlin, 33, East Garden street, who was riding with Kleckner, suffered a badly cut lip, bruises and lost several teech, according to State Patrolman Leo B. Hill, who was called to the scene shortly after the mishap.

The report of the fatal crash as given to the state patrolman was that all of the four cars figuring in the crash were headed toward Freeport. There were two cars ahead of the King machine, which was a Dodge sedan, driving side by side. These machines sideswiped, with the result that one of the cars left the road, turned completely around and headed north directly toward the King car. Seeking to avoid a crash, King applied the brakes, with the result that the car driven by Kleckner struck the rear of the King auto, knocking it from the highway and causing it to overtrun.

Miss Ashenfelter was riding in the rear seat with Robert Collalti, 18, of 405 W. Galena avenue. There were two other young men in the front seat with King, according to the report. King was returning from Monroe Wisc. when he picked up Miss Ashenfelter and Collalti, both of whom it was said, had been at the Northern Star dance hall, to give them a ride into town. A short distance along the highway he came upon the two young men, whom he did not know, and picked them up. The car driven by King was smashed beyond repair.

Immediiately following the crash King kicked the windows out of the car in order to remove the occupants, fearing the car might become ignited and burn. It was in this manner that his legs were cut and bruised. Young Collalti suffered minor bruises and cuts about the forehead.

Miss Ashenfelter was born on a farm near Davis in 1920, the daughter of Mr.a nd MRs. Frank Ashenfelter. She attended Davis grade schools and later enrolled at Freeport senior high, being a member of the 1938 senior class. Besides her mother she is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Bernice Daniels. Freeport; Mrs. Fern Tielkemeier, Pecatonica.

Funeral services for Miss Ashenfelter will be held Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 at the family home in Davis and at 2 o'clock at the Methodist church, David, the pastor, Rev. Jesse Epps officiating. Interment will be made in Davis Cemetery.
