EDWARD ALLINGTON , 47, proprietor of the Steinway Music Store, 417 South Locust avenue, passed away at a local hospital last night, following a brief illness. Suffering from a severe cold for about ten days, he went to the hospital a week ago for treatment. pneumonia developed and this together with a heart affection caused his taking off. Funeral services will be conducted at the Kuehner funeral chapel South Galena avenue, at 1:00 o'clock Friday afternoon. Rev. E. V. Kennan, rector of Grace Episcopal church, will conduct the services and interment will be made at Oakland. Mr. Allington was born in Freeport Oct. 23, 1886, the son of Edward Day and Emilyn Allington. He was educated in Freeport schools and early showed an interest in music later becoming one of the best known musicians in this section. His profound interest in music resulted in his engaging in the music business and he conducted a music store on West Stephenson street for many years. It was only a few months ago that he sold the building which housed his business and moved to the South Locust avenue address. He had started the erection of a building there to contain his store and it was nearing completion at the time of his recent illness. By studious application, Mr. Allington mastered his profession and was known throughout northern Illinois as an accomplished teacher of music. He played piano, violin, xylophone and many other instruments and gave instruction son all of the instruments. Besides his business here Mr. Allington also conducted a music store at Rockford for a number of years. He was a member of the old Gibler orchestra of Freeport, recognized several years ago as one of the leading musical organizations of northern Illinois. Later he organized and conducted his own orchestra, which became widely known and patronized. On June 30, 1909, he was united in marriage to Miss Eva M. Smith, Mt. Carroll, the ceremony taking place in Freeport. The family resides at 443 West Stephenson street. Besides his widow he leaves two children, Helen and Jack Allington, both at home. He also leaves his mother, Mrs. Edward Day Allington; a brother, Glenn Allington, both of Freeport; a sister, Mrs. Florence Rothermel, Moline. His father passed away about four months ago. Mr. Allington was a member of Grace Episcopal church.

BERTHA ANDERSON , 727 W. American Street, died in a Freeport hospital Monday, September 10, 1956. She was born October 13, 1903 in Freeport, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Anno Stubbe. On December 24, 1924, she was married to Riley Anderson, who died June 3, 1950. She was an employee of the Northwestern Telephone Company since 1951. She was a member of First Lutheran Church of Freeport. Survivors include a son, Russell, a student at Carthage College; a daughter, Shirley June, a student nurse in Chicago; her mother; one sister, Mrs. George Simmons of Rapid City, South Dakota; and six brothers, John and George Stubbe of Freeport; Charles of Rockford; and Fred, Henry, and Clifford, all of California. Funeral service will be Thursday at 1:30 p.m. (DST) at First Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Charles F. Landwere, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery. Friends may call at the Burke Tubbs Funeral Home after 5 o’clock tonight until 10 a.m. Thursady.

ORR FRANK ANDERSON , 76, 12 ½ East Main Street, Freeport, a former member of the Merchant police, died today at 4:30 a.m. in a Freeport hospital. (Alice Horner’s note: The Illinois Statewide Death Index, 1916-1950 shows his date of death as October 2, 1949 as does another obituary clipping which I believe came from the Lanark, Illinois weekly newspaper.) Born April 14, 1873 at Morrison, he was the son of John and Mina Anderson. His marriage to Ida E. (Horner) Marsh took place February 2, 1904. She died in August 1934. (Alice Horner’s note: He was married to Eva E. Vanscoten on July 6, 1892 in Whiteside County, Illinois. She died on July 21, 1892 in Colorado.) Anderson farmed until 1923, when he moved to Freeport. He became a member of the Merchant police force March 1, 1935 and continued these duties until July 15, 1949 when he retired. Besides his wife, three brothers and one sister died previously. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Charles Mowery, one step-daughter, Mrs. Harvey Voss, and one step-son, Chief of Police Walter L. Marsh, all of Freeport; one sister, Mrs. Vannie Miller of Newark, New Jersey, and one brother, Frank Anderson of New York City; 11 grandchildren and nine-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. in the Walker Mortuary. Rev. Donald F. Landwere, pastor of Oak Avenue E. U. B. church will officiate. Interment will be in Lanark Cem.

IDA E. (HORNER) ANDERSON - Funeral services for the late Mrs. Ida E. Anderson will be conducted at the family home, 1307 South Bidwell Avenue, Freeport, at 1:30 o’clock Thursday afternoon, with services at the Church of the Brethren, corner of West Pleasant Street and South West Avenue at 2 o’clock. Rev. Niel Esbensen will conduct the services and interment will be made at Lanark Cemetery. Ida E. Horner was born at Lanark January 12, 1868, the daughter of Peter and Wilhelmina Horner. She was married to Frank A. Marsh in 1893. (Alice Horner’s note: the correct date of their wedding was July 23, 1894.) the husband passed away in 1902. Two children were born to this union, Walter Marsh, a member of the Freeport police department, and Mrs. Harvey (Martha) Voss. She was again married February 2, 1902 to O. F. Anderson. (Alice Horner’s note: The correct marriage date is February 2, 1904.) Besides her husband she leaves two daughters and a son, Mrs. Harvey (Martha) Voss, Mrs. C. O. (Mina) Mackert of Chicago; Walter Marsh of Freeport. There are also two brothers, Fred and Edmund, both of Lanark. Nine grandchildren survive. Mrs. Anderson was a member of the Church of the Brethren at Lanark.

MILDRED (HOLMES) ARGANBRIGHT - Stephenson Court Apartments, died Saturday morning in Freeport Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. (Alice Horner’s note: Other sources show she died sometime in August 1975.) A lifelong member of Embury United Methodist Church, she also was a member of the Freeport YWCA, Elks Auxiliary, and the Freeport Country Club, and a 50-year member of the American Legion Auxiliary. Born July 11, 1895 in Freeport, she was the daughter of Charles S. and Rebecca (Yount) Holmes. She was married to Dr. Ned Arganbright November 16, 1918 in Hattisburg, Mississippi. He died March 8, 1961. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Robert C. (Ann) Krogull and Mrs. J. M. (Jeanne) Hartsough, both of Freeport; a son, Ned H. of Grand Rapids, Michigan; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. A sister and two brothers preceded her in death. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Burke Tubbs Funeral Home. The Rev. J. Steven Mindrup, associate pastor of Embury United Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. tonight at the funeral home. A memorial fund has been established.

MARY ASCHE - Services for Mrs. Mary Asche, 51, a resident of the Seward community for many years who died at 4:15 p.m. Monday, August 20, 1945, in a Rockford hospital, where she had been a patient since August 17, will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Asche farm home and at 2 p.m. at Silver Creek Reformed Church, German Valley. Burial will be in the Silver Creek Cemetery. The former Mary Kaltenbach was married December 18, 1918 to Weert Asche, and the couple had lived in this vicinity since that time. Also surviving are three daughters and five sons, including Walter, servicing with the armed forces in the Philippines; three sisters, Mrs. Simon Frey of Ridott, Mrs. Albert Frey of Mount Morris, and Mrs. Tab Asche, of Seward, and a brother, Chris Kaltenbach of Egan.

LAVERNE C. ATHERTON , 90, of Freeport died Saturday August 15, 1998 at Freeport Memorial Hospital. A daughter of George and Mary (Peters) Cook, she was born January 15, 1908 in rural Winnebago County. On August 12, 1925 she and Charles Y. Atherton were married in Freeport. He died July 29, 1994. After moving from Rockford to Freeport in 1936, she was employed at First National Bank until retiring in 1970. She was an active member of First Lutheran Church for 60 years and was a longtime member of Scottish Rite Women’s Club. Surviving family members include three children, Barbara (Robert) Donahue of Pearl City; Doris (James) Elliott of Freeport, and William (Ruth) Atherton of Greendale, Wisconsin; seven grandchildren, Lori (Boyd) Totten, Leigh (Don) Wegrich, Deborah Wisch, Annette (David) Foster, Allison (Charles) Vail, Lindsay (Kelly) Elliott and John Atherton; six great-grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; and 15 step-great-grandchildren. Preceding her in death were her parents, husband, infant twin sons, Ronald and Rodney, one grandson, four sisters, and one brother. The funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at First Lutheran Church with the Rev. Linda Kersten, associate pastor of the church officiating. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today at Burke Tubbs Funeral Home. A memorial fund has been established for First Lutheran Church.

NORMAN, BENNIE, ABNER AUE - For the third time within a few days death has entered the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Aue and claimed three of their six children. The mother had been confined to her bed for a week with neuralgia and rheumatism when diphtheria, the dreaded disease, attached the family. The youngest child, about two and a half years old, being first afflicted, showed signs of improvement; meanwhile the oldest son, Norman, grew rapidly worse and died Monday night at three o’clock. A private funeral was held at 4 p.m. The youngest child Bennie showed a change for the worse and died Wednesday at 6 p.m. and was buried Thursday a.m. Abner, aged ten years, succumbed to the disease on Wednesday at 11:30 and was buried Wednesday at 5 p.m. Irene the only daughter, aged 17 and Samuel aged 20 are critically ill. Charlie, aged 8, has had only a light attack and is isolated from the rest of the family. John Norman Aue, was born at Lena, Aug. 30, 1879 and came to this city when a child. Here he grew to manhood and has been at home until the last year, when he was employed as a brakeman at the Chicago and Great Western at Rock and was home on a visit. Abner Levern Aue was born in Freeport, July 3, 1891. Benjamin Clark Aue was born at the home on Union Street, July 8, 1899.

ANNA SOPHIA HENRIETTA (HEIDENRICH) AUE , 84, a lifelong resident of Stephenson County died in a Freeport hospital late yesterday after an extended illness. She had been a patient at the hospital since April. She lived at 209 West Jackson Street. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at First English Lutheran Church. Interment will be made in City Cemetery. Anna Sophia Henrietta Heidenreich was born near Lena Sept. 13, 1864 a daughter of Charles and Henrietta Heidenreich. She was baptized and confirmed in Salem Evangelical church at Elroy. Her marriage to Charles Rech took place in 1882. One daughter, Mable, was born to this union. The husband died in 1918. In November, 1922, she was married to John Aue, who died in 1932. The daughter, two brothers and two sisters preceded her in death. Surviving are two brothers, Henry of Belvidere, and Silas of Boise, Idaho. Two foster children also survive. Mrs. Aue was for many years a faithful and active member of the First English Lutheran Church.

EMMA (CLARK) AUE , wife of J. A. Aue and a resident of this county for several years, passed away at her home, 103 Float Street, at 3:35 o’clock this morning following an extended illness. Mrs. Aue had been ailing for the past ten years and had gradually failed during the last two years. Emma Clark was born at Rockville, Canada, June 30th, 1861. She resided in Canada with her parents until she was four years of age when the family moved to Stephenson County settling near Lena where they resided for many years. She was united in marriage to J. A. Aue in 1879. They resided at Lena until 1887 when they moved to Freeport where they have since resided. Seven children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Aue, four children are deceased. Her husband and the following children survive: Samuel Aue, serving in France; Irene Flora Pontius, Rockford, and Charles Aue, Rockford. One sister, Miss Meta Clark resides in New York City. One Brother also survives. Funeral services will be announced later.

JOHN AUE SR. of Lena died in Freeport, Friday morning at 4:15, at the residence of his son on Adams Street. He was born in Cumberland Co, Pennsylvania in 1820. When he was six years old, his parents moved to Ohio where he resided until 1857 when they came west, locating on a farm near Lena. After farming several years, he moved into Lena and has since made his home there, serving as fire marshall for about ten years. Three years ago, he received a stroke of paralysis and has had three strokes since. During the fair, he attempted to walk from Lena to Freeport. He got as far as Elroy when a farmer gave him a ride to this city. He attended the fair Wednesday and while on the fairgrounds, received his fourth and last stroke. Friends assisted him to the son’s house, unconscious most of the time. He leaves a widow and seven children, Mrs. W. K. French of Kansas, Mrs. John McCulloch, Mrs. A. Johnson, Mrs. Charles Peight, John and Sam of Freeport, and Mrs. David Birkenmeyer of Warren. The funeral will be Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. from Lena Lutheran Church. Rev’d M. Calver will officiate.

JOHN ALFERD AUE , 73, and a native of Stephenson county, passed away at his home, 413 South Walnut Avenue, Freeport, at 4:30 o’clock Friday morning. Mr. Aue had been in failing health for the past several months. Mr. Aue was born near Lena August 13, 1859, a son of Mr. and Mrs. John Aue. He resided in that vicinity for a number of years and then went to Freeport. For sixteen years he was employed as a superintendent at the Woodmanse manufacturing company plant and later by the Illinois Central railroad company. He retired from active work about three years ago. He was first married in 1879 to Miss Emma Clark, who passed away about fourteen years ago. About ten years ago he married to Mrs. Anna Rech who survives. The following children also survive: Samuel E. and Charles A. Aue, Chicago; Mrs. Henry Pontius, Rockford. There is also a step-daughter, Mrs. William Lehman, Freeport. A brother and sister also survive: Samuel D. Aue, Rockford; Mrs. Flora Peight, Chicago. He was a member of the Security Benefit association.

MARIE (SPANGLER) AUE -At her home on Carpenter street in this city, Mrs. Maria Aue, the widow of John Aue, passed away very suddenly, being found dead in bed this morning. The deceased was 67 years of age. Mrs. Aue removed to Freeport from Lena about seven years ago and during her residence here formed many pleasant acquaintances, who will deeply regret to learn of her death. The husband of the deceased passed away about five years ago. Six children are left: Mrs. John McCullough, Mrs. Charles Peight and John and Samuel Aue, of this city; Mrs. D. Berkemeier, of Elgin; Mrs. Lee, of Warren, and Mrs. Johnson, of Rockford. A number of grandchildren are also left.
THE INQUEST
Coroner Detrick held an inquest at 10 o’clock this morning, for the purpose of ascertaining the cause of death. The following named gentlemen composed the jury: O. E. Stearns, foreman; E. L. Cronkrite, A. C. Schwarze, A. C. Ortmeier, C. D. Becker and Jason Cole. Mrs. S. D. Aue, a daughter-in-law of the deceased, and at whose home occurred the death, testified that the deceased retired last evening in usual good health, but complained of being tired. On going to call her mother-in-law this morning she found her dead. The deceased was of the opinion while living that her death would be caused by heart failure. Drs. D. C. L. Mease and J. F. Fair each testified they had been called to treat the deceased at various times for heart trouble, and in their opinion said ailment was the cause of her demise. A verdict in accordant with the above facts was rendered – that death was caused by organic trouble of the heart. The funeral will occur on Saturday morning, Rev. H. A. Ott to officiate.

EARL V. AURAND , 60, of 616 S. Galena Ave., died in his home early today after an extended illness. He was born in Loran Township August 27, 1893, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Aurand, and was educated in local area schools. His marriage to Miss Elta Klipping took place December 23, 1915. They moved to Freeport in 1917. Survivors include his widow and four sons, Laverle, Kenneth, and Carson, all of Freeport; Millard, of Madison, Wisconsin. One brother also survives, W. D. Aurand, of Kansas City, Missouri. His parents died previously. Funeral arrangements are being made in the Walker Mortuary.

ELTA (KLIPPING) AURAND , 616 S. Galena Ave., died Tuesday afternoon August 12, 1969 in Freeport Memorial Hospital following a brief illness. Mrs. Aurand, a member of Faith United Methodist Church, was employed in the cafeteria at Burgess Cellulose Co. Born January 2, 1893 in Pearl City, she was the daughter of Fred and Maggie (Ploeger) Klipping. On December 23, 1915, she was married to Earl V. Aurand. He died January 29, 1954. Surviving are three sons, Laverle and Kenneth, both of Freeport, and Carson of Rockford; and 10 grandchildren. Five brothers, a sister, and a son preceded her in death. Funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Walker Mortuary. The Rev. Eldon Schriver, pastor of Faith United Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery.

MILLARD AURAND , about 35, of 118 W. Broadway, died unexpectedly Thursday, August 8, 1963 after suffering a heart attack in Ormond Beach, Florida where he was visiting with his brother. Mr. Aurand was an employee of the Neuendorf Transportation Co. in Madison, and also worked part-time at the Broadway Standard Service Station. (Alice Horner’s note: Oakland Cemetery personnel in Freeport, Illinois confirm he is buried there.)

HOWARD E. AUSTIN , 69, a resident of Freeport for the past thirty years, passed away at his home at 710 South Walnut Avenue at 4:45 o’clock this morning, April 7, 1939. He suffered a stroke about one week ago. Funeral services will be held at the Walker Mortuary. West Main Street, at 2 o’clock Monday afternoon. Rev. B. C. Holloway, Stockton, will officiate and interment will be made at Stockton. Friends may call at the family home tomorrow and Sunday. Mr. Austin was born at Bellefonte, Pennsylvania August 13, 1869. He was united in marriage to Cora Dick of Stockton They moved to Freeport thirty years ago. (Cora E. (Dick) Austin Lebkicher’s obituary gives their wedding date as 1903; however, the Illinois Statewide Marriage Index, 1763-1900 gives it as October 5, 1893 in Jo Daviess County.) Mr. Austin was a carpenter by trade but for a period of seventeen years was employed by the Stover Manufacturing & Engine Company. Besides his wife he leaves one brother, John Austin of Freeport. His parents, a sister and a brother preceded him in death. He was a member of Embury Methodist Episcopal Church. (Alice Horner’s note: Howard E. Austin’s listing in Illinois, Deaths and Stillbirths Index, 1916-1947 gives his parents names as Owen Austin and Mary Williams.)
