LYDIA (MATTER) CAMERON was born in Jefferson Co., PA, Dec 5, 1839. She married Wm. H. Cameron, Dec. 23, 1873, in stephenson Co., IL. Two daughters, Mary Catherine and Myrtle Pearl preceded her in death, as also her husband, Wm. H. Cameron, about two weeks ago, March 31st. Three grandchildren, other relatives and a host of friends mourn her departure. Mother Cameron was converted in childhood and joined the Evangelical church. She has been a member of the local church for more than fifty years. Her Christian life was greatly admired by all who knew her exemplary in every way. As long as physical strength permitted she was an active leader in Sunday school, Women's Missionary Society and other organizations of the church. Even until the last she was an interested attendant at all the services of the church. A week ago Sunday she worshipped with us here. Quietly and unnoticed she slipped away in the early hours of Sunday, April 13, and now is at home with her Lord. E.L.S.

WILLIAM HENRY CAMERON was the third of eight children born to Samuel and Amelia Cameron. He was born December 31, 1839, in Douphin County, PA, and died at his home in Jewell, KS, March 31, 1924 age 84 yrs and 3 mths. In the year 1873 he was united in marriage to Lydia J. Matter. This union was a happy one counting through more than fifty years. To them were born two daughters, Mary Catherine and Myrtle Pearl, both of whom preceded him to the Glory Land. In 1869 he moved from Pennsylvania to Stephenson Co., IL and in 1870 he came with a company of pioneers to Jewell Co., KS of which company S.R. Worick, John Hoffer and A.J. Wise remain. He homesteaded the farm adjoining Jewell on the east which never passed from his possession. He organized and taught the first school in Jewell County in his cabin on the homestead and some are present today who were of the student body of that school. He held official positions to which he was chosen by his community with credit to himself and entire satisfaction to his constituency. In early days he was influential in bringing Evangelical ministers to Jewell although he himself was a member of another church. He opened the first regular prayer meeting held in the community in his father's home in 1870, and when the Evangelical church was organized sometime after he became a charter member and at the time of his death he and his sister, Mrs. Amelia B. Bottorf, were the only remaining charter members. Curing the more than 50 years of history of the Evangelical church in the community, he has held the office of Classleader, Exhorter, Chorister, Sunday school teacher, served on many important committees in the church, and upon each of the three building committees that supervised the building of the three church buildings that have served this congregation, and until the last few years has served continually on the board of trustees of the church. He was always of a reserved and quiet disposition, but was always in his place in church, probably not hearing everything that was being said in his later years, yet this did not keep him away from the church services. Thus he was lending inspiration by his presence to every service. He leaves to mourn his departure, his wife, one sister, Amelia B. Bottorf, three grandchildren, Neale Cameron Evans, of Guide Rock, NE, Mildred Irene Evans, of Emporia, KS, and Myrtle Agnes Evans, of Independence, KS, and a large company of other relatives and friends.
