MARY C. DAWS
- Relatives at Lena have received word of the death of Mrs. Mary C. Daws, 71, who passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. John Beyers, at Ferndale, Washington after several months’ illness. Mrs. Daws, whose maiden name was Mary Gillette, was a sister of the late William O. Gillette, and her husband was a son of Mrs. Lucy Daws of Lena. She left this vicinity thirty-eight years ago and has since resided at Ferndale, Washington.
Surviving relatives are one daughter, Mrs. John Beyers, a son, Earl. A. Daws, Ferndale, two brothers, Ambrose Gillette of Champaign, and Edward Gillette, of Eldorado, California. Funeral services and burial will take place at Ferndale, Washington.
DANIEL LEE DEITSCH , 69, of Macomb, passed away at 4:33 PM Tuesday July 15, 2008 at McDonough District Hospital in Macomb. He was born April 22, 1939 in Ft. Madison, Iowa to Doyle and Mary Swartz Dietsch. He is survived by 3 brothers Darrell (Dixie) Dietsch of Milledgeville, Illinois, Doyle (Kathy) Dietsch of Conway, Arkansas, Dennis Dietsch of La Plata, Missouri; 2 sisters Dorothy Barber of Dakota, Illinois and Delma Dietsch of Durand, Illinois. He is also survived by a special friend Barb Sturm of Macomb. He was preceded in death by 1 brother Dwight Dietsch and 1 sister Daisy Dietsch. He worked at Bridgeway in Macomb and enjoyed fishing, vintage cars and driving old tractors. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM Wednesday July 23, 2008 at the Dodsworth-Piper-Wallen Funeral Home. Cremation has been accorded. There will be no visitation. Burial of ashes will be in Dakota Cemetery.
FRANK DELAND
,65, died in a Freeport hospital early today after a brief illness. He came to Freeport in 1945 as supervisor of construction when repairs and improvements were being made at the plant of the Hoefer Manufacturing company, South Chicago avenue. He remained with the Hoefer company until 1947. Mr. Deland was born in Canada May 19, 1884. He is survived by a daughter, who lives at Montreal, Canada. Funeral arrangements are being made at the Schwarz funeral home.
ANNA (MEYER) DeWALL
, wife of Henry DeWall, died about 10 am this morning. She was born in Silver Creek Twp. Nov. 24, 1873 and on Feb. 26, 1896 was united in marriage to Henry DeWall. She leaves her husband, four children, Meinert DeWall of Freeport, Mrs. Edna Wirtjes, Shannon, John and Lloyd of Baileyville, two brothers, Ernest of Shannon, James, of Baileyville, and two sisters, Mrs. Kate Haack of Florence Station and Mrs. Carrie DeWall. Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday from the late home and at 1:30 from the Bailey Reformed Church. Rev. J.h. Brandau will officiate.
MYRTLE MARIE (STURTEVANT) DICKINSON
, of Freeport Route 3, an employee of Micro Switch until retiring in 1971, was dead on arrival at Freeport Memorial Hospital Thursday night. (The Social Security Death Index gives the date as June 1976.) She was a member of First United Methodist Church. Born February 9, 1907 near Shannon, she was the daughter of William O. and Vinona (Dague) Sturtevant. She was married to Clifford L. Dickinson August 22, 1929 in Galena.
Surviving are her husband; a daughter, June Dickinson Smith of Poynette, Wis.; a son, Clifford L. of Wilmington, Del.; six grandchildren; two brothers, Brice of Eleroy and Albert of Kent; and a sister, Mrs. Erwin (Katie) Plock of German Valley. A brother preceded her in death.
Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Burke – Tubbs Funeral Home. The Rev. Orrell Ruth, pastor of First UM Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Chapel Hill Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. A memorial fund has been established for the radio ministry of the church.
WILLIAM G. DIDDENS
, 62 custodian at Union school for the past fifteen years, passed away about 3 o'clock Monday afternoon at his home at 1122 South Chicago avenue, as the result of internal injuries sustained On Sunday night, January 3, when he slipped and fell on the ice while leaving Embury Methodist Episcopal church, where he attended services. Mr. Diddens was born in Freeport on June 23, 1874, and attended the public schools here. He became a machinist and for a period of about twelve years was employed at the Woodmanse Manufacturing company plant and later at the W. T. Rawleigh company plant. He then moved to Bonesteel, S. D., where he was employed for some years by the North Western Railroad company, returning to Freeport in 1922. Since that time he has been custodian at Union school. He was united in marriage June 27, 1901, to Miss Matilda Harbers, in Freeport. He is survived by his widow; a daughter, Mrs. Leone D. Gienapp, of Freeport, two grandchildren, Virginia and Georgia Mae Gienapp; two brothers, George and Henry Diddens, of Freeport; four sisters, Mrs. Frank Richter, of Soux Falls, S. D., Amrs. Anna Henderson and MRs. Isabel Poppen, of Elgin, and Mrs. Ida Snyder, of Dakota. Mr. Diddens was a member of Second Presbyterian church of Freeport, of Bonesteel Lodge No. 145, A. F. & A. M. at Bonesteel, S. D. and of Rosebud chapter, No. 82, Order of the Eastern Star, also at Bonesteel. Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon at the Schwarz Funeral home. Rev. Bruce McCullough, Pastor of Second Presbyterian church, will officiate and burial will be made in the city cemetery. The Masons will have charge of the funeral.
HEZ DIEFENTHALER
, who staged more productions than anyone else in Freeport, died Thursday morning, October 2, 1975, in the Columbus, Ohio Medical Center. He had moved from his native Freeport in 1969 after the death of his wife, lived with his stepson in a Columbus suburb for a time and had been residing at First Community Village there in recent years.
Mr. Diefenthaler got has start in the theater in summer stock after graduating from high school. He got some vaudeville experience and home again in Freeport in the 1930s he directed several Winneshiek Players productions and summer theater series in Orangeville and Williams Bay, Wisconsin. In the Army Special Services during World War II, he staged 108 shows and trained men in theatrical and musical work.
In 1947 he bought a store which became Gifts By Hez, which he operated until becoming a decorating consultant for the House of Lindberg. Remaining active in Winneshiek plays, he also assisted Miss Jeannette Lloyd in her Freeport High School productions. He adapted to a diabetes-caused blindness and continued to travel alone, with his last trip to Freeport coming in January 1974 for the funeral of his brother Collin. His last Freeport production was “Pursuit of Happiness” on the Winneshiek stage in 1972.
Born November 12, 1905 in Freeport, he was the son of Antone and Cora (Poffenberger) Diefenthaler. He married Lynnferd Kiplinger April 4, 1942 in Freeport. Surviving are a stepson, Donald C. Kiplinger of Columbus, and two step-grandchildren. A sister and a brother preceded him in death.
Funeral services will be at noon Monday at Columbus Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Freeport Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Walker Mortuary and after 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Memorial funds have been established for the Freeport church and for the Winneshiek Players.
LYNN DIEFENTHALER
, 626 W. Sephenson Street, died this morning, July 31, 1969 in Freeport Memorial Hospital following a brief illness. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and participated in several Winneshiek Theater plays.
Born August 4, 1889 in Fergus Falls, Minnesota, she was the daughter of Martin Thomas and Anna (Mars) McMahon. On April 4, 1942, she was married to Hez Diefenthaler in Freeport. Surviving are her husband; a son, Donald C. Kiplinger of Columbus, Ohio, and two grandchildren. A brother preceded her in death.
Funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in Walker Mortuary. The Rev. Edward Henninger, pastor of Embury United Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 9 p.m. Friday at the mortuary.
SUSAN DIEFENTHALER
- Graveside memorial service for Miss Susan Diefenthaler, who taught at Lincoln School for many years before retiring, will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday in Oakland Cemetery. The Rev. Earl Christman, pastor of First Presbyterian Church, will officiate. Miss Diefenthaler died September 8, 1973 in Rogue Valley manor Retirement Home in Medford, Oregon, where she resided since leaving Freeport 12 years ago. She was born July 6, 1886 in Oconee, daughter of Phillip and Mary Ann (Bose) Diefenthaler. She was the last member of her family. She was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters. Arrangements were completed by Walker Mortuary.
ARTHUR A. DIESTELMEIER
, a life-long resident of Lena, died in a Lena nursing home early this morning where he had resided for several years. Mr. Diestelmeier was born June 20, 1884 near Lena, son of Frederick F. and Mina (Beine) Diestelmeier. He was a retired farmer and a member of Lena Immanuel Lutheran Church. Survivors include two brothers, Dr. D. E. Deistelmeier of Freeport, and John Diestelmeier of Lena. He was preceded in death by six brothers and two sisters.
Funeral service will be Sunday at 2 p.m./ in the Immanuel Lutheran Church. Rev. Robert C. Schmidt, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Lena Burial Park. Friends may call in the Leamon Funeral Home after 1 p.m. Saturday until noon Sunday.
CATHERINE (NEEMAN) DIESTELMEIER
, wife of the late Henry Diestelmeier, and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Neeman, was born in Ostfriesland, Germany February 15, 1862 and departed this life in St. Francis Hospital in Freeport, Ill. on Thursday evening at 6:30 o’clock November 6, 1930 bringing her age to be 68 years, 8 months, and 21 days.
Mother Diestelmeier was reared in the Lutheran Church in Germany. She came to this county in 1890. Just lately she joined the Home Department of the Bethel S. S. Evangelical Church of Shannon, Illinois. She had been dividing her time visiting her children until this fall when she built a cozy little cottage in Shannon, near her daughter, Mrs. Stoner. She only enjoyed her home a few days when she was called to another home, “made with hands eternal in the heavens.” Before she left she gave the testimony that “All is well and I am ready to go.”
Those surviving are: Mrs. Alma Stoner, Shannon, Illinois, Henry Meier, Phoenix, Arizona; Mrs. Elizabeth Reschel, Dillworth, Minnesota, Louis of River Forest, and Clarence of Rockford. Six of her grandsons acted as pallbearers, Rev. Stepan officiating, and burial was made in the City Cemetery in Freeport.
CHARLES WILLIAM DIESTELMEIER
, a native of this community, passed away about 7 o’clock Wednesday night, February 14, 1934, at his home on a farm about a mile southeast of Lena following an illness of about seven months’ duration. Mr. Diestelmeier suffered a stroke on last August 5, but afterward his condition improved greatly. He took a turn for the worse several weeks ago and since that time continued to fail.
Mr. Diestelmeier was born on August 2, 1869 and spent his entire lifetime on the same farm in Kent Township which has been the Diestelmeier homestead for the past seventy-five years. He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. William Richards of Rock City, Mrs. Amelia Derr of Lena, and the following brothers, Henry, Ernest, John, and Arthur of Lena, Albert Diestelmeier of Rockwell, Iowa, and Dr. E. A. Diestelmeier of Freeport. His parents, two brothers, and a sister preceded him in death.
Mr. Diestelmeier was a faithful member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church at Lena and was always interested in church activities. Funeral services at the home Saturday afternoon will be followed by services at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Lena, probably at 2 o’clock, with Rev. Christian Pieper officiating. Burial will be made in the Lena Cemetery.
EDWARD W. DIESTELMEIER
, Funeral services for the late Ernest W. Diestelmeier, who died Saturday afternoon, July 3, 1937, at his home here following a prolonged illness, were held at 1:15 o’clock this afternoon from the Leamon Funeral Home in Lena. Rev. C. Pieper, pastor of Immanuel Lutheran Church, of which he was a member, officiated and burial was made in the Lena Cemetery.
Ernest W. Diestelmeier was born near Lena October 17, 1865, and spent much of his time in the community. For many years he was engaged in the buggy business and spent several years in the west. He had been in failing health for sme years and had been bedfast since last December. He is survived by five brothers, Dr. E. A. Diestelmeier of Freeport, Stephenson County coroner; Henry, John and Arthur Diestelmeier of Lena; Albert Diestelmeier of Rockwell, Iowa; and two sisters, Mrs. William Richards and Mrs. Amelia Derr of Lena
ESTHER SOPHIA (BEINE) DIESTELMEIER
, 620 W. Moseley Street, died Thursday morning, January 12, 1967 in Freeport Memorial Hospital following a short illness. She was born August 4, 1899 in Eleroy, the daughter of Simon and Augusta (Keppen) Beine. She married Ben Diestelmeier February 4, 1924 in Eleroy. Surviving are her husband; a son, Robert of Freeport; and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother. Funeral service will be Monday afternoon at 1:30 at Walker Mortuary. The Rev. Robert A. Marquardt, pastor of Salem United Church of Christ, of which she was a member, will officiate, assisted by the Rev. N. C, Andersen. Burial will be in Chapel Hill Cemetery. Friends may call at the mortuary after 2 p.m. Sunday.
FLORENCE DIESTELMEIER
, 82, a resident of Parkview Home who died there Saturday following a short illness, was held 1 p.m. today at Walker Mortuary. (Transcriber’s Note: Her date of death wasn’t given but my source handwrote it in as September 7, 1982.) The Rev, William H. Blomberg, pastor of Embury United Methodist Church officiated. Burial was in Lena Burial Park . A memorial fund has been established for Embury United Methodist Church . She was a retired secretary of the Stephenson County Farm Bureau, a member of Embury United Methodist Church and a 50-year member of the Lena Order of the Eastern Star and White Shrine of Jerusalem in Freeport . Born April 12, 1900 in Lena , she was the daughter of August and Marie (Altenbern) Diestelmeier. There are no immediate survivors. She was preceded in death by five sisters and one brother.

- Funeral services for the late Fred Diestelmeier, who passed away Sunday afternoon at his home in Lena, will be held Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 from the home and at 2 o’clock from Immanuel Lutheran Church, of which he was a member. (Alice Horner’s note: Sunday would have been November 24, 1929. However, both the Illinois Statewide Death Index, 1916-1950 and Illinois, Deaths and Stillbirths Index, 1916-1947 state that the died November 25, 1929, which would have been Monday.)
Fred Diestelmeier was born May 1848, on the Diestelmeier homestead, south of Lena and has been a successful farmer all his life, retiring from active work eight years ago, since which time he was resided in Lena. (Alice Horner’s note: The source “Illinois, Deaths and Stillbirths Index, 1916-1947” gives his date of birth as June 5, 1848.) In 1877, Fred Diestelmeier was united in marriage to Philapena Paul, who survives. (Alice Horner’s note: The Illinois Statewide Marriage Index, 1763-1900 shows her name as Phoebe Paul, and the full date of the marriage as November 28, 1877 in Stephenson County. The Illinois, Deaths and Stillbirths Index, 1916-1947 shows her name as Phoebe Distelmeir. Fred Diestelmeier’s entry on the same source shows his name as Frederick Distelmeier and his wife’s name as Pelliphina Distelmeier.) Also surviving are five children; John, Arthur F., Mrs. Cora A. Schafer, Albert C., and William R. Diestelmeier, all residing near Lena. One child died in infancy. He has two living brothers, August and Charles Diestelmeier of this city, and a sister, Mrs. Anna Altenbern of Freeport.
JOHN F. DIESTELMEIER
, of Lena died Sunday, August 30, 1970 in Alma Nelson Manor Nursing Home, Rockford, following an extended illness. He was employed by the former Rech-Diestelmeier Clothing Store here and the State Department of Revenue. Mr. Diestelmeier was a member of Scottish Rite Bodies, Valley of Freeport. He was a past master of Lena Masonic Lodge, of which he was a member for more than 50 years.
Born November 4, 1879 in Lena, he was the son of Fred and Mina (Beine) Diestelmeier. In 1906 he married Mary Benfer in Lena. Surviving are his widow; a son, Willard of Rockford; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by eight brothers and three sisters.
Funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in Leamon Funeral Home, Lena. The Rev. Joseph Summers, pastor of Lena United Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Rock Lily Cemetery, Winslow. Friends may call after 2 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, where a Masonic service will be conducted at 8 that night.
LUCILLE (DOLE) DIESTELMEIER
, of Lena died Monday afternoon, December 22, 1969 in Freeport Memorial Hospital following an extended illness. Mrs. Diestelmeir, a former Stephenson-Carroll Publishing Company employee, was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church here and Lena American Legion Auxiliary. She was born January 5, 1920 in Pearl City, daughter of Albert and Pearl (Koch) Dole. She was married to Walter Diestelmeier November 1, 1941 in Pearl City. Surviving are her husband; a daughter, Mrs. Charles (Sharon) Janicke of Freeport; a granddaughter; and her mother of Lena. She was preceded in death by her father. Funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. The Rev. Dean Reninger, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Lena Burial Park. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. tonight at Leamon Funeral Home here. A memorial fund has been established.
ELEANOR R. (BOYINGTON) DITTMAN
- Graveside service for Mrs. Eleanor Rae (John F.) Dittman, 97, formerly of Freeport, who died Monday, September 7, 1981 at Grovemont Nursing Home in Bradenton, Florida will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Oakland Cemetery. She was a longtime Freeport resident and a 25-year resident of Florida. In 1921, her husband built the Lindo Theater, now known as the Freeport Theater.
Born September 19, 1883 in Freeport, she was the daughter of William and May (Ferris) Boyington. She married John F. Dittman February 1, 1908. He died April 29, 1939. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Marjorie (Hal) Chasey of Palmetto, Florida; two grandsons, and seven great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers.
GEORGE JOSEPH DOLLMEYER
, 78, lifelong resident of Freeport, senior member of the firm of Dollmeyer & Merck, dealers in books and stationery supplies, passed away suddenly at his home, 679 West Stephenson street, about 10:30 o'clock Saturday night. He had suffered from a heart affection for some time, but had een at his place of business all day Saturday. He returned about 9 o'clock Saturday night and was found dead in bed about one and one-half hours later. Funeral services will be conducted at the home at 3 o'clock Tuesday afternoon, Rev. Eugene R. Shannon rector of Grace Episcopal church, will conduct the services and interment will be made at Oakland. Mr. Dollmeyer was born in Freeport Jan. 22, 1860. He received his education in local schools and began work at an early age. In 1876 he and the late F.F. Brown were employed as clerks in the C.G. Sanborn book store and after continuing in that capacity until 1883 they engaged in business themselves under the firm name Brown & Dollmeyer, handling books, stationery, office supplies, pictures and frames and kindred articles. Mr. Dollmeyer had continued actively in the business until the time of his death of Mr. Brown and remained as a partner until 1919 when his interests were purchased by Miss Anna Merck and the firm then became Dollmeyer & Merck. The original store was located in the Munn building, corner of Stephenson and Van Buren, and later was moved across the street to the Straub building, now occupied by the Walgreen store. In 1930 the firm moved to its present location in the Weis building, 214 West Stephenson street. Mr. Dollmeyer was the first agent for Chicago newspapers in Freeport. During his long business career in Freeport Mr. Dollmeyer became one of the city's best known citizens. His ready wit made him popular and he had a host of friends. His marriage to Miss Nellie Walker took place 52 years ago. Besides his wife he leaves two sons, Lermond Dollmeyer, Freeport, Walker Dollmeyer, Philadelphia PA. There is also one sister, Mrs. Emma Ulrich, Freeport.

Funeral services for the late George Joseph Dollmeyer were held at the home, 679 West Stephenson street, at 3 o'clock this afternoon. Rev. Eugene R. Shannon conducted the services and interment was made at Oakland. The following acted as bearers, George Fugate, Walter Young, Elmer McCool, A.J. Stukenberg, John H. Place, Harry Shouer, Jacob Weiss was an honorary bearer.
D. PATRICK DONAHUE
, 68, of Rockford , formerly of Freeport , died Tuesday afternoon, January 21, 1997 at his home after a lengthy illness. Son of Henry and Loretta (Carroll) Donahue, he was born July 12, 1928 in Stockton . He and Mary Cramer were married April 30, 1949 in Freeport . He and his wife moved to Rockford from Freeport 44 years ago. He was employed by John Hancock Insurance and Financial Services Company 40 years in various capacities including sales, marketing, public relations, recruiting, training and management. He opened and managed the first general agency in Rockford for the John Hancock Company, and received numerous professional recognitions and outstanding sales awards while employed by the company. In 1981, he opened and managed the first Midwest regional office for the John Hancock Small Group Pension Division in the western suburbs of Chicago . He was a member of numerous professional organizations and was a past president of the Life Underwriters Association. In the 43 years he was an active parishioner of St. James Catholic Church he served on numerous church committees, was a lay lector, was a past president of the St. James PTA, and the parish council, and was active in parish counseling, Pre-Cana and Catholic Family Missions. He also participated in numerous Boylan Central Catholic High School activities, and served as president of the Boylan Home and School Association at one time. In addition to his success in the insurance industry, and his deep religious convictions, he was a devoted family man. Surviving family members include his wife; three daughters, Susan Donahue of Greenbrae, California; Debra Parsons of Chicago, and Mary Christine Donahue of Rockford; three sons, Patrick (Laura) and Michael Donahue of Hinsdale, and Thomas Donahue of San Rafael, California; six grandchildren; five brothers, Henry, Robert (Barbara), and Paul (Nancy), all of Freeport, Richard Donahue of Streator, and Brian (Marty) Donahue of Bartlett; two sisters, Jeanette (Richard) Sullivan and Lorna
(John) Marsh, both of Freeport; and numerous nieces and nephews. One brother, Jim Donahue, preceded him in death. Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Saturday at St. James Catholic Church with the Revs. David E. Beauvais, William M. McKinstra and Norbert M. Richter officiating, Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery .
JAMES FRANKLIN DONAHUE
, 62, of Chicago , formerly of Freeport , died Wednesday September 27, 1995 at his home. Son of Henry and Loretta Donahue, he was born August 7. 1933 in Freeport and graduated from Aquin High School in 1951. He and Darlene Lamm were married May 17. 1958 in Freeport . He was a butcher at A&P Grocery in Freeport prior to his employment with John Hancock Insurance, also in Freeport . After moving to Chicago several years ago, he continued working for the agency until retiring after 35 years of service. He was a member of St. John Fisher Catholic Church in Chicago andd had been a member of the former Germania Club. An Army veteran, he served during the Korean War in the early 1950s. Surviving family members include his wife; his children, John (Ellen) Donahue of Chicago and Laura (John) Pytlewski of Lockport; and his grandchildren, Michael and Matthew Pytlewski. Also surviving are six brothers and two sisters, Henry (Betty) Donahue, Jeannette (Richard) Sullivan and Robert (Barbara) Donahue, all of Freeport, Richard Donahue of Streator, Patrick (Mary) Donahue of Rockford, Paul (Nancy) Donahue, and Lorna (John) Marsh, both of Freeport, and Brian (Mary Lou) Donahue of Bartlett. Survivors also include 32 nieces and nephews. Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Monday at St. John Fisher Catholic Church, 10234 S. Washtenow, Chicago. Burial will be in Holy Sepulcher at Chicago . MARY DONAHUE
, 83, passed away at St. Joseph's Home for Aged, East Jefferson street, Saturday. Funeral services were held at Holy Cross Catholic church, Stockton, at 9 o'clock this morning. RICHARD DONAHUE
, 74, of Streator, a former Freeport resident, died Monday, June 21, 1999 at St. Mary Hospital in Streator. He was born December 3, 1924 to Henry J. and Loretta (Carroll) Donahue in Detroit , Michigan . After graduating from Aquin High School in 1942, he continued his education at the University of Iowa , earning a degree in journalism in 1946. He was a journalist for the Chicago Tribune for 23 years, and was editor of the National Underwriter for 22 years. Surviving are three brothers, Robert (Barbara) Donahue of Pearl City, Paul (Nancy) Donahue of Freeport and Brian (Mary) Donahue of Bartlett; two sisters, Jeannette (Richard) Sullivan and Lorna (John) Marsh, both of Freeport; and one sister-in-law, Mary Donahue of Rockford. Preceding him in death were his parents and three brothers, Patrick, James, and Henry Donahue. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. Mary Catholic Church in Freeport with the Rev, Joe Lutz officiating. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery . Visitation will be from noon to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Burke-Tubbs Funeral Home. A memorial fund has been established for St. Mary Catholic Church.
SHELDON E. DORNINK , 86, of Galva, died Friday, May, 1, 2009 at his home after a winter illness kept him from golfing in Padre Island, TX. He was born June 25, 1922 in Lancaster Twp., IL, the son of Howard and Jessie (Newcomer) Dornink. He graduated from Dakota High School in 1940 and attended Manchester College in Manchester, IN. He married Dorothy Angle on January 6, 1944 in Chicago. That September he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served in the Pacific campaign. He participated in the Navy Choir and was on the boxing team. Sheldon farmed near Dakota, IL from 1947-1959. He joined the Country Companies Insurance Agency in 1960, working as an agent for Warren County until 1962. He and his family moved to Ursa, IL when he was promoted to Agency Manager for Adams County. He and Dorothy lost a daughter, Karen Jean, in an automobile accident in 1963. The family moved to Galva in 1964 when Sheldon became Agency Manager for Henry County which he continued until his retirement in 1986. After retirement, he helped develop Woodhull Truck Plaza, Maxwell's Market, Woodhull Bank and the Woodhull Subdivision. He also helped form the Henry County Bureau Foundation in 1986. A lifelong sports enthusiast, Sheldon participated in high school and college athletics, became a certified basketball referee and became an avid golfer having the rare accomplishment of 5 hole-in-ones. He belonged to Lake Calhoun, Midland and Padre Island Country Clubs. Sheldon was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Galva, where he previously served as a Sunday School teacher and he sang in the choir for over 20 years. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy, daughters; Colleen (Robert) Faherty of Spring Green, WI, Melody (Doug) Huette of Iowa City, IA and Lynn (Carl) Mittnight of Boston, MA, sons; Alan D. Dornink and Rob (Denise Hulick) Dornink, both of Galesburg, eight grandchildren, a sister, Jean (Carl) Cahoon of Orangeville, IL, a brother, Roger (Shirley) Dornink of Freeport, IL and a brother-in-law, Bill (Carolyn) Angle of Dakota, IL. Sheldon enjoyed telling jokes and "pulling off" a good practical joke. He also enjoyed traveling with Dorothy and delighted in his children and grandchildren's activities. Visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 PM, Friday, May 8 at the First United Methodist Church in Galva, followed by a prayer service at 7:00 PM. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, May, 9 at the Dakota Community Church in Dakota, IL. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the services at the church. Burial will be in the Dakota Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Kewanee Hospital Homecare Program or to the First United Methodist Church in Galva. ELIZABETH R. (JACOBY) DORR
, and former resident of Freeport, passed away at St. Joseph's hospital, South Bend, Ind., Sunday night, after an extended illness. Funeral services will be held at the Schwarz funeral home, South Galena avenue, at 8:30 o'clock Thursday morning, with a requiem mass at St. Joseph's Catholic church at 9 o'clock. Rev. S. J. Eye will celebrate the mass and interment will be made in St. Joseph's cemetery. Elizabeth R. Jacoby was born in Waddams Grove. Her marriage to Frank A. Dorr took place June 7, 1905. She is survived by her husband, and one sister, Mrs. Carl Altenbern, Rockford.
FRANK A. DORR
, 72, died in a Freeport hospital at 2 p.mn. Saturday after a brief illness. Since last November he made his home with his sister, Miss Elizabeth Dorr, 202 1/2 West Main street. He was born in Freeport Aug. 11, 1879, the son of Jerome and Agnes (Bruehler) Corr, and was educated in local schools. His marriage to Elizabeth Ruth Jacoby of Waddams Grove took place at Lena in 1908. His wife died in 1946. For a number of years he had been employed here by the Stephens Motor company. Later he went to South Bend, Ind., where he was employed by theStudebaker company until he retired last August. His sister is the only survivor. He was a member of St. Puis society of St. Joseph's parish and South Bend council Knights of Columbus. Services will be held in the Schwarz funeral home at 9 a.m. Tuesday with a requiem mass at St. Joseph's Catholic church at 9:30. Rev. J. H. Berg will celebrate the mass. Interment will be made in St. Joseph's cemetery. The Knights of Columbus and St. Pius society will recite the rosary at the funeral home at 7:30 o'clock tonight.
EVADINE P. (HOOD) DORSEY
, of rural Baileyville died Wednesday afternoon, August 16, 1972 in Freeport Memorial Hospital following an extended illness. She was born September 4, 1918 in Stephenson County, daughter of George E. and Maude (McDonald) Hood. On January 28, 1936 she was married to Paul W. Dorsey in Freeport.
Surviving are her husband; two sons, William L. of Freeport and Robert M. of Baileyville; a brother, William of Torrence, Calif.; and two sisters, Mrs. Edward (Dorothy) Ward and Mrs. Marjorie Cabot, both of Freeport.
Funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday in Burke Tubbs Funeral Home. Burial will be in Chapel Hill Cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 9 tonight at the funeral home. A memorial fund has been established.
LESTER DORSEY
, 82, of Sarasota , Florida , formerly of Freeport , died February 13, 1985 at his home after a long illness. He was born January 5, 1903 in Florence Township , the son of Michael and Sophia (Luettig) Dorsey. He married Katherine Klinke on December 5, 1930. Mr. Dorsey farmed in Stephenson County and Wisconsin . Later he was employed as custodian of the Union Labor Club, Freeport . He was a Freeport rural volunteer fireman and member of Zion Church . Survivors include his widow; two daughters, Joan, Chicago and Mrs. Darla (Harold) Myers, Sarasota ; one son, Dr. David M. Dorsey, Madison , Wisconsin ; one brother, Kenneth, Lena ; and four grandchildren. Cremation will be in Sarasota . Graveside service will be held at a later date at Oakland Cemetery
SOPHIA DORSEY
, 63, widow of the late Michael Dorsey, passed away at a local hospital early today. She resided at 1440 South Float Avenue . Sophia Luettig, daughter of Christopher and Henrietta Luettig, was born in Florence Township . (Transcriber’s Note: No date of birth given, but the 1900 US Federal Census for Florence Township shows her being born in June 1875.) She was united in marriage to Michael Dorsey, who preceded her in death. Two sons also preceded the mother in death. Surviving are the following children: Mrs. John Lubbers, Lester, Benjamin, and Kenneth Dorsey, all of Freeport . Three brothers and a sister survive, August and Edward Luettig, Florence Township ; Fred Luettig and Mrs. Grant Olthoff, Freeport . Funeral services will be conducted at the Eichmeier & Becker Funeral Home, West Stephenson Street at 1:30 o’clock Thursday afternoon with services at Oak Avenue Evangelical Church at 2 o’clock. Rev. William Beuscher will conduct the services and interment will be made in the City cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home.
ROBERT L. DOWNS
, 81, of Freeport died Sunday, January 2, 2000 at Freeport Manor Nursing Center . He was born January 20, 1918 at Lanark to Frank B, and Amy (Wolfley) Downs . He attended Lanark schools. On July 25, 1937 he and Charlotte E. Wilson were married in Clinton , Iowa . He worked at Servisoft Soft Water and for Freeport Mosquito Abatement District.
Surviving are his wife; two sons, Roger D. Downs of Freeport and Kevin R. (Imelda) Downs of Bushnell; two grandchildren, Michelle Burkett of Tulsa , Oklahoma and Kaiser Downs of Bushnell; one great-grandchild, Christina Burkett of Tulsa ; one brother, Max L. (MaryJean) Downs of Norwalk, California; and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents, and three brothers, Harlan, Donald, and Randall.
The funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Chapel of Peace at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens . Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Schwarz Funeral Home where the family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. A memorial fund has been established for the American Cancer Society.
NANCY (HOMPT) DYSLIN
was born May 26, 1806, in Newville, Herkimer county, New York and died at the home of her son-in-law C. H. Little, in Freeport, March 28, 1893. She was married to John Dyslin at the age of 19 in her early home. They came to Carroll county, Ill., in 1865. They were blessed with eight children, five sons and three daughters. She was converted and joined the Methodist Episcopal church in her girlhood, and her confidence in God has never flagged through all her long and eventful life. She was buried from the Methodist Episcopal church at Lanark Friday morning at 10 o'clock, Rev. Frank H. Gardner, officiating.
