AXEL E. DAHLGREN
, of Rockford died this morning, November 17, 1975 in St. Anthony Hospital, Rockford, after a brief illness. He was the father of Mrs. W. Kenneth (Marien) Stein of Freeport. Born May 1, 1900 in Farwell, Minnesota, he was the son of John and Ida Dahlgren. He married Julia W. Larson February 26, 1920 in Rockford.
Surviving besides the daughter are his widow; another daughter, Mrs. V. Richard (Kathleen) Smith of Mesa, Arizona; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two brothers, and two sisters. Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Broadway Covenant Church, Rockford. The Rev. George Elia, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Scandinavian Cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Olson Mortuary, Rockford and from noon until time of service Wednesday at the church. A memorial fund has been established for the church.
DR. JOHN N. DALY
- Death summoned one of the prominent professional men of Stephenson county Sunday afternoon when Dr. John N. Daly, a practicing physician and surgeon in this vicinity for the past thirty-three years, passed away at a local hospital after a several days illness. Dr. Daly had been confined to the hospital since last Tuesday. While he gradually failed there were times when he appeared to have gained strength and improved slightly but his condition soon became such that it was apparent he would lose his brave struggle to survive. His passing had been expected for the past few days but despite this fact news of his taking off came as a shock to his beloved wife and his scores of friends and acquaintances
throughout this section, being one of the largest enjoyed by any local physician. Dr. John N. Daly was born in Rush township, JoDaviess county 57 years ago being a son of John and Ellen Daly. He was educated in the JoDaviess county schools attending school at Warren and Galena and later teaching school in that county. He attended Rush Medical college graduating from that institution in 1895. Immediately following his graduation he started practicing at Orangeville where he remained until the fall of 1920 when he moved to Freeport continuing his practice here. He was a keen student of his profession which enabled him to meet with success in his practice. Dr. Daly was affiliated with the Stephenson County Medical Society, the American Medical Association, the Illinois State Medical Society, the American Society of Railway Surgeons. He was chief of the obstetrical department of the Evangelical Deaconess hospital and an attending physician at St. Francis and Methodist Memorial Hospitals. He was also a member of the Freeport Country Club and had served as an Illinois Central
physician and surgeon in this vicinity for many years. He was united in marriage to Miss Maude Hoyman in 1905. Besides his wife he is survived by the following brothers and sisters: William and P. J. Daly, Warren; James Daly, Nora; Dr. T. H. Daly, Mt Carmel, Ill.: Mrs. Ellen Murray, residing in Iowa, Mrs. John Sughroue, Stockton. Funeral services will be conducted from the late home, 627 West Stephenson street, at 2:30 o'clock Wednesday afternoon. Dr. D. L. McNary, pastor of the First Presbyterian church, will conduct the services and burial will be made in Oakland cemetery. The body will be in state at the home from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday, where friends may view it. L. E. Beckire and Ezra Miller will have charge of the funeral arrangements and the following will act as pallbearers; Drs. T. J. Holke, W. J. Rideout, K. F. Snyder, W. L. Karcher, N. C. Phillips and . J. Stickle. The honorary pallbearers will be Harry Snyder, Orangeville; A. J. Clarity, Robert B. Koenig, J. Manley Clark, D. F. Graham, H. L. Lea, Freeport, John W. Kubli, Monroe, Wis., Dr. _. E. Smith, Stockton; Dr. Griffin, Polo, Dr. Runkle, Stockton.......
MARY DALEY
- former resident of Rockford and widow of the late Andrew Daley who served as roadmaster for the Rockford Interurban company for many years, died last night in her home at Milwaukee, Wis., following an illness of several months. Survivors include five sons, Edward, Beloit funeral director; Charles, of Rockford, John of Chicago, and Andrew and James both of Dec Moines, Ia.; a daughter Marietta, Milwaukee; three brothers, Anton and Charles Borsdorf, both of Freeport, and WIlliam Borsdorf, Milwaukee and a sister, Mrs. James Cavanaugh, Milwaukee. The Daleys lived in Freeport before coming to Rockford. Mr. Daley having been employed there by the Illinois Central Railroad company. Services will be held at 9:30 a.m., Saturday at the E. A. Daley funeral home, Beloit, and at 10 a.m. at St. Thomas Catholic church. Rev. Francis E. Dohery will officiate, and burial will be in St. Mary's cemetery, Rockford. A rosary service will be held at 7:15 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
MARY (PABST) DEAN
- of Rockford, formerly of Freeport, died Saturday at Rockford Memorial Hospital following a brief illness.
Mrs. Dean resided in Freeport until 16 years ago, when she moved to Rockford. Born March 17, 1878 in Germany, she was the daughter of Henry and Katherine (Lulk) Pabs (Plock Pabst). She was married to Daniel Dean, who preceded her in death in 1934. (July 10)
Surviving are a son, Arthur of Rockford, with whom she resided; one granddaughter, five great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson. She was preceded in death by a sister.
Funeral service will be Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. at the Walker Mortuary. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery. Friends may call at the mortuary today. The Rev. Gustav Bloom, pastor of the Seward Congregational Church will officiate at the service.
JONAS DEAN
- died at his home in Harlem township, five miles west of Freeport, this morning at 3:30, as a result of heart trouble. He was taken ill yesterday morning and to the afternoon fell unconscious in the yard and never recovered. He was born in Stark county, Ohio, Jan. 4, 1840, and moved to Illinois with his parents in 1844, settling on a farm in Stephenson county, His parents died twenty years ago, and since then Mr. Dean had managed the home farm. He was never married. He was a member of the Trinity United Evangelical church, in Freeport, for fifty years. He is survived by two sisters, Marie and Harriet, living at the old home, and a brother, Frank A. Dean of Alta Vista, Kans. The funeral will be held at the late home, Saturday morning at 10:30. Rev. L. C. Schmidt will officiate, and interment will be in the City cemetery.
HENRY JOHN DERBY
, for 50 years a resident of Freeport at 404 N. Nursery Avenue, died in a nursing home at Apple River Friday afternoon, July 13, 1956 where he had lived for the past 14 months. He was a member of the Forreston Reformed Church. He was born in Breslau, Germany on November 27, 1877, the son of Frederick C. and Maria Derby, and was brought to this country in infancy. He married Miss Marie Sunbom of Forreston. She died in 1943. He leaves two sisters, Mrs. Henry Vosberg and Mrs. Lester Hewins, both of Freeport, and a brother, Emil Derby of Peoria. One sister died previously. Friends may call at the Walker Mortuary until 11 a.m. Monday and after 12:30 at the Forreston Reformed Church, where the funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. (C. S. T.) on Monday. The Rev. J. H. Kenny will officiate and burial will be in White Oak Cemetery.
MARIE (SUNBOM) DERBY
, passed away last evening at her home, 404 North Nursery Avenue. She had been ill for the past two years. (Alice Horner’s note: Her full name was Marie (Sunbom) Derby, sometimes called Mary on the censuses.) Funeral services will be held at the Walker Mortuary, but the time will not be set until word is received from relatives in California. Services will be held also in the German Reformed Church in Forreston, of which Mrs. Derby was a member. Rev. Cornelius Bode will officiate and interment will be made in White Oak Cemetery, near Forreston.
Mrs. Derby was a daughter of Fred and Bertha Sunbom and was born June 9, 1878 in Forreston, where she attended public schools. She was married June 7, 1907 to Mr. Derby, at the home of her parents in Forreston. They came to Freeport and resided here ever since. She is survived by her husband; three sister, Mrs. Helen Stubbe of Ashby, Minnesota, Mrs. Anno (Lena) Stubbe of Freeport, Mrs.. Frank Borchard of San Francisco, California; two brothers, Theodore Sunbom of Lanark, and George Sunbom of Freeport. Mrs. Lester G. Hewins is a sister-in-law. One brother, Ralph, preceded Mrs. Derby in death. A number of nieces and nephews also survive. Friends may call at the Walker Mortuary.
AMELIA DERR
, 78, a native of Kent Township, died at 2 o’clock this morning, July 12, 1952 at the home of her brother, Arthur Diestelmeier, in Kent Township. Mrs. Derr had been an invalid for the past six years. She was born June 28, 1874 in Kent Township, the daughter of Fred and Mina Diestelmeier. (Alice Horner’s note: Prior to 1910, she had been married to William Derr.) Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Hazel Shulz; four brothers, Dr. E. A. Diestelmeier of Freeport; John and Henry Diestelmeier of Lena; and Arthur; three grandchildren; one foster grandchild; and six great-grandchildren. She was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church of Lena. Funeral service will be held Monday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of the Leamon Funeral Home. Interment will be at Lena Burial Park.

MAYME (REEDER) DEUTH
- 1341 S. West Ave., died this morning in Freeport Memorial Hospital following a brief illness. Mrs. Deuth was a member of Second Presbyterian Church. Born November 5, 1897, she was the daughter of John and Phoebe (Strong) Reeder of Ridott. She was married to William Bingner, who died in 1946. She later was married to Evan Deuth.
Surviving are her husband; a son, Donald Bingner of Freeport; a daughter, Mrs. Virgil (Delores) Van Dyke of Cambridge; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a stepson, Vincent Deuth of Freeport, a step-daughter, Charmine of Mount Carroll; two step-granddaughters; and five sisters, Mrs. Hazel Barr of Sterling, Mrs. Dailsy Seaton of Ridott, Mrs. Ada Wilson of Freeport, Mrs. Thomas (Myrtle) Kerkhoff of Freeport, and Mrs. Viola Trujillo of Shannon. She was preceded in death by a sister.
Funeral service will be Monday at 1:30 p.m. in Burke Tubbs Funeral Home. The Rev. James Griffes, pastor of Second Presbyterian Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery, Friends may call at the funeral home from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday. A memorial fund has been established.
FLORENCE DITZLER
- Lake Bluff – Mrs. Florence (Stanley H.) Ditzler, 88, of Lake Bluff, a former Freeport, Illinois resident, died Wednesday in Lake Bluff. (Alice Horner’s note: The Social Security Death Index gives this date as May 1981.) A Freeport resident from 1924 to 1963, she was a retired elementary school teacher of the Freeport school system. She was born July 26, 1892 in Avoca, Wisconsin. Surviving are one son, William S. of Lake Bluff; and one grandson. She was preceded in death by her husband.
Funeral service will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at Union Church in Lake Bluff. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Monroe, Wisconsin. There will be no visitation. Arrangements were completed by Wenban Funeral Home in Lake Forest. The family requests that all remembrances be directed to the Heart Fund.
PEARL (KOCH) DOLE
, of Lena died Wednesday afternoon, December 24, 1969, in Freeport Memorial Hospital following an extended illness. Mrs. Dole’s daughter, Mrs. Walter (Lucille) Diestelmeier of Lena, died Monday, December 22, 1969 in Freeport Memorial Hospital following an extended illness.
Mrs. Dole was born February 3, 1898 in Pearl City, daughter of Charles and Emma (Kuhlemeier) Koch. (Alice Horner’s note: This Kuhlemeier name is spelled Kuhlemeyer by other sources.) On August 14, 1918 she was married to Albert Dole in Pearl City. He died in 1944. Surviving are five sisters, Mrs. Walter (Teresa) Blair, Mrs. Walter (Viola) Eiseman, and Mrs. Richard (Margaret) Olthoff, all of Freeport, Mrs. Jacob (Evelyn) Sturtevant, and Mrs. Everett (Orelda) Sturtevant, both of Lanark; and a brother, Harold of Shannon; a granddaughter; and a great-granddaughter.
Funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in St. John’s Lutheran Church, Pearl City, of which she was a member. The Rev. Walter Hallerud, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Pearl City.
HENRY A. DOMMEL
, 74, a lifelong resident of Freeport, passed away at a local hospital early today after a three-weeks illness, having suffered a stroke. He resided at 320 West Spring street. Funeral services will be held at the Walker mortuary, West Main street, at 3 o'clock Saturday afternoon. Rev. Carl M. Grahl, pastor of Zion Reformed church, will conduct the services and interment will be made in City cemetery. Friends may call at the mortuary. Mr. Dommel was born in Freeport Oct 8, 1869, the son of Henry and Mary Dommel. Until recently he had been engaged in the painting and decorating business. He was united in marriage Sept. 12, 1904, to Mary Dean, Freeport. The wife and daughter, LaVelta Brinkmeier, and a son, Percy, preceded him in death, as did three sisters, Mrs. Margaret Durling, Mrs. Mary Baker, Mrs. Catherine Hille. He leaves three sons, Lester, serving with the U.S. Marines overseas; Nelson, in the U.S. maritime service; LeMuriel, Freeport. There are four grandchildren, Marjorie Brinkmeier, Freeport; Robert Brinkmeier, in the U.S air corps, Simone and Kay Louise Dommel, Freeport.
MARGARET DOMMEL
, the five-month old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Dommel, residing in the Loos addition, died at 4:30 o'clock yesterday afternoon. The funeral was held this afternoon.
MARY (DEAN) DOMMEL
, 55, wife of Henry A. Dommel, of 104 1/2 West Main street, passed away at a local hospital at 4:40 o'clock this morning following a brief illness. Her death resulted from pneumonia. Funeral services will be conducted at the Eichmeier & Becker funeral home, West Stephenson street, at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon. Rev. B.F. Grenoble, Lutheran minister, will conduct the services and interment will be made in the city cemetery. Mary Dean was born June 27, 1881, in Ridott township. She was united in marriage to Henry A. Dommel Sept. 1903. Besides her husband she leaves the following children: LeMural Lee Dommel, Neal Dommel, Lester Dommel, all of Freeport. Two sisters and two brothers also survive, Mrs. Emma Mullen, Freeport; Mrs. Lulu Hodel, Rockford; Charles and Mark Dean, Freeport. A son and a daughter preceded her in death.
HENRY DREIER
, 67, city fireman here for 18 years, died Thursday in State hospital, Anna, Ill., where he had been a patient for the last five years. He was born July 16, 1887, in Freeport and spent most of his life in the Freeport community. Surviving are four sisters including Mrs. Freda Baker, Mrs. Ed Luettig, and Mrs. T. F. Burns, Freeport, and a brother, William C. Dreier, Freeport. The body will arrive at 11:45 a.m. Friday at the Walker mortuary chapel. Services will be held there at 2 p.m. (CDT) Saturday with the Rev. C. J. Schuth, pastor of Emmanuel Lutheran church, officiating. Burial will be in City cemetery.
MARIE DREIER
, 95, widow of the late William F. Dreier, passed away about 11 o'clock Sunday night at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J.F. Burns, 409 South Liberty avenue. She had been confined to her bed about four days. Mrs. Dreier was born in Germany in 1848 and in 1872 was united in marriage to William F. Drier. She came to the United States in 1872. Her husband passed away about twenty-four years ago. Surviving are seven children, Mrs. John W. Daniels, Mrs. Freda Back, Mrs. Edward Luettig, Mrs. Anna Burns, William and Henry Dreier all of Freeport, and Mrs. Jennie Bell, of Chicago; seven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. One child preceded her in death. Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon at the Walker Mortuary. Rev. O. Schumacher, of Immanuel Lutheran church will officiate and burial will be made in Oakland cemetery.
WILLIAM C. DREIER
, who resided with his son, Richard W. of Beloit, Wis., for the past two years, died this morning in Beloit Convalescent Center following a brief illness. Mr. Dreier, formerly of Freeport, was employed as a machinist by Arcade Manufacturing co. and later by Micro Switch before retiring. He was a longtime member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. Born Nov. 30, 1891, in Freeport, he was the son of William Carl and Marie (Genk) Dreier. He married Martha Luttermann May 12, 1915 in Freeport. She died Feb. 24. Surviving besides his son, Richard, are another son William C. Jr. of Freeport, a daughter, Mrs. CLarence (Margaret) Behm of Chicago; three grandchildren, and a sister, Mrs. Anna Burns of Freeport. He was preceded in death by two brothers, four sisters and a grandson. Funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in Walker Mortuary with the Rev. William Griebel, pastor of Immanuel Church, officiating. Burial will be in Chapel Hill Cemetery. Friends may call after 4 p.m. Friday at the mortuary. A memorial fund has been established for the church.
