NANCY LOUISE FARWELL , Chicago, a former Freeport resident, died Tuesday, March 25, 1975 in Jackson Park Hospital, Chicago, after a brief illness. Born September 29, 1904 in Freeport, she was the daughter of Roy K. and Pearl M. (Dick) Farwell. Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Betsie Peale of Wyoming, and a brother, Charles Roy of California. She was preceded in death by two brothers. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Church of the Messiah, Chicago. Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Oakland Cemetery here with the Rev. Clarence Langton, pastor of Grace Episcopal Church officiating. Friends may call from 2 to 10 p.m. Friday at Lein & Son Funeral Chapel, Chicago.

CATHERINE A. (MINGLE) FISHER , widow of Samuel H. Fisher, who died eleven years ago, expired at the home of her son, Edwin J. Fisher, two miles west of Rock Grove, at 9:30 o'clock last evening. The deceased had suffered a stroke of apoplexy within the past few days and this is given as the cause of her death. Mrs. Fisher was a native of Aaronsburg, Centre county, Pa., being born there Sept. 19, 1820. She was the daughter of David and Lydia Mingle. She came west with her parents in 1853, and in 1861 she was united in marriage to Samuel H. Fisher. Four children were born to the couple, John H., F. D., Katherine and Edwin J. The latter is the only one now living. The Fishers, coming to the county in an early day. were well known in the vicinity of their home. Mr. Fisher held the office of school director for twenty-eight years and trustee of schools for thirty-four years. Mr. and Mrs. Fisher and their family were church-going people and took an active part in promoting the interests of the church they attended. Mr. Fisher was in the mercantile business at Rock Grove for about four years and for the ten years following he was in the grain business in partnership with J. D. Schmeltzer at Dakota. From that time to his death he retired from all active work except the management of his farms. The funeral services will be held from the home of her son Sunday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock. A number of Freeport relatives will attend the obsequies. Rev. Mr. Marberger, pastor of the Reformed church at Dakota, will officiate.

PAULINE (MEISE) FITCHNER , 82, a native of Freeport, died in Parkview Home at 5:15 a.m. Sunday after a lingering illness. The former Pauline Meise was born in Freeport May 22, 1871, the daughter of William and Johanna Meise. her marriage to Alfred Fitchner took place Sept. 18, 1895. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family, her husband, six brothers and three sisters having died previously. She was a member of St. John's Evangelical and Reformed church and the Woman's Guild of that church. Funeral service will be held in the Walker Mortuary at 3 p.m. Tuesday. The Rev. C. H. Uthlaut, pastor of St. John's Church, will officiate. interment will be made in Oakland Cemetery.

LYDIA FLICKINGER - Funeral service for Mrs. George (Lydia) Flickinger of Pearl City, who died Friday morning, May 9, 1975, in Freeport Memorial Hospital, will be at 2p.m. Sunday in the Salem United Church of Christ, Lena. The Rev. Milton Kading, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call after 4 p.m. today and before 11:30 a.m. Sunday at the Offenheiser-Schwarz Funeral Home, Pearl City, and then at the church. A memorial fund has been established. Mrs. Flickinger was born April 3, 1887 near Lena, the daughter of Emil and Marie (Diestelmeier) Braun. She married William Hummermeier February 21, 1906. He died December 25, 1938. On December 23, 1947, she married George Flickinger. He died March 11, 1965. Surviving are a son, Oscar Hummermeier of Davis; two daughters, Mrs. Owen (Esther) O’Halloran of Grinnell, Iowa and Mrs. Harold (Laura) Gassman of Pearl City; 10 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, a grandson, 3 brothers, and a sister.

ELNORA (BEINE) FLUEGEL , 92, died Saturday, April 22, 2000 at Lena Continental Manor Nursing Home, Lena. She was born November 18, 1908 in Eleroy, the daughter of Wilhelm and Caroline (Petow) Beine. She married Nelson Fluegel on May 1, 1930 at Salem Church. He died in 1984. She was a homemaker who enjoyed the piano and sewing. She was a member of Salem United Church of Christ. She is survived by 1 son, Neal N. Fluegel of Tempe, Arizona and 2 granddaughters, Taunia and Kyra. She also had five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Ruth Steer (1959). Visitation time is 11:00 to 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 26, 2000 at the cemetery. The funeral will be at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday April 26, 2000 at Salem Cemetery with graveside services officiated by Rev. Brandon Woosley. Burial will be at Salem Cemetery. EMMERSON L. FLUEGEL , of rural Pearl City died Friday night, January 15, 1971, in his home. Mr. Fluegel, a member of Faith United Methodist Church in Freeport, farmed in Stephenson County. He was born in Eleroy March 4, 1907, son of Julius and Viola (Meiers) Fluegel. He married Alma Drake June 7, 1929 in Forreston. Surviving are his widow; a son, Eugene of Lena; four grandchildren; two brothers, Nelson of Pearl City and Ervin of East Troy, Wisconsin; and three sisters, Mrs. Morris (Mildred) Peterson and Mrs. Gladys Peterson, both of Rockford, and Mrs. Monroe (Isabelle) Kelly of Freeport. He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, his parents, and a brother. Funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in Faith United Methodist Church. The Rev. Eldon Schriver, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Chapel Hill Cemetery. Friends may call after 2 p.m. at Leamon Funeral Home in Lena and after 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church. A memorial fund has been established.

ETHEL (JOHNSTON) FLUEGEL , 98, of Freeport went to be with the Lord on Monday, July 18, 2011 at her home. Mrs. Fluegel was born August 2, 1912 in New Bedford, Illinois, the daughter of Joseph and Carrie (Hall) Johnston. Ethel married Wesley J. Fluegel. He died on October 8, 1965. Mrs. Fluegel always thought the best of everyone, was a source of encouragement and inspiration to all who knew her, and she cared deeply for children. She was a member of The First Church of Nazarene in Freeport. Ethel is survived by her daughter, Mary Lou Owner of Freeport; granddaughter, Heather (Brett) Spengler of Freeport and grandson Kurt (Kathy Douglas) Owner of Freeport. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and infant son Larry Laverle, four sisters and three brothers. She is dearly loved more than words can express and will be deeply missed by her family. A Funeral service will be held Friday, 10:30 A.M. in The First Church of the Nazarene. Rev. John W. Hollis, Pastor will officiate. Visitation will be Thursday, 5:00-7:00 P.M. in Burke-Tubbs Funeral Home and from 9:30 A.M. until time of service Friday at the church. Burial will be in Chapel Hill memorial Gardens, Freeport. A memorial has been established for The First Church of The Nazarene.

ABBIE ELLEN (STEBBINS) FORRY - Last rites for the late Mrs. Clarence Forry were conducted at the Wiese & Tempel funeral home, South Adams Avenue, at 2 o’clock this afternoon. Rev. L. M. Phillips and Rev. James Henderickson conducted the services and interment was made at Oakland Cemetery. (Alice Horner’s note: She was Abbie Ellen Stebbins and she died April 27, 1935 in Freeport, Illinois.)

CLARENCE G. FORRY - Freeport Route 4, a retired mechanic and garage owner, died Monday, July 31, 1967 in Freeport Memorial Hospital. He was born June 10, 1888 in Stephenson County, son of Rudolph and Maria (Kloeppinag) Forry. Mr. Forry married Abbie Ellen Stebbins January 27, 1909. She died in 1935. In September of 1936 he married Mary Frank, who died in September of 1963. He then married Ella Chapion in June of 1966. Surviving are his widow; two daughters, Mrs. Charles (Bertha) Calhoun of Freeport and Mrs. Clyde (Bernice) Monigold of Lena; two step-daughters, Mrs. Arthur (Mildred) Eichman of Dubuque, Iowa and Mrs. Stanley (Alene) Ehler of Rockford; a brother, Harvey of Freeport; one sister, Mrs. E. L. Jacobson of Rockford; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in Walker Mortuary. The Rev. E. E. Schaefer will officiate. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery. Friends may call at the mortuary after 4 p.m. today.

MARIA (KLOEPPING) FORRY , 84, passed away at a local hospital late Saturday, October 13, 1945 after an extended illness. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 o’clock Tuesday afternoon at Walker Mortuary, West Main Street. Rev. Grant V. Graver, pastor of Trinity Evangelical Church, will conduct the services and interment will be made at Oakland Cemetery. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Conrad Kloepping, she was born February 16, 1861 at Florence Station. She was united in marriage to Rudolph Forry in 1882. She leaves a daughter and two sons, Mrs. Edna Travis of Freeport, with whom she made her home; Harvey and Clarence, both of Freeport. A sister also survives, Mrs. Sarah Forry, of Freeport. There are five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Her husband, three sisters and three brothers preceded her in death.

RUDOLPH FORRY , 81, passed away at his home, 323 West American Street, last night following an illness which extended over the past five months. Funeral services will be conducted at the home at 2 o’clock Wednesday afternoon with services at Trinity Evangelical Church at 2:30 o’clock. Rev. L. M. Phillips will conduct the services and interment will be made at Oakland Cemetery. Rudolph Forry was born in York County, Pennsylvania April 16, 1854, the son of Samuel and Lydia Forry. His early life was spent there and at the age of 13 years he came west, settling in Florence Township, Stephenson County, Illinois where he resided until 1899 when he moved to Rock Grove Township. In 1906 he retired from farming and moved to Freeport. His marriage to Miss Maria Kloepping took place February 15, 1882. (Alice Horner’s note: An alternate spelling of her name is Maria Klipping.) To this union three children were born. Besides his widow, he leaves two sons and a daughter, Harvey and Clarence Forry, and Mrs. William C. Richter, all of Freeport. There are also five grandchildren and two great grandchildren. A sister, Eleanor Forry and his twin brother Samuel, preceded him in death. Mr. Forry served for a period of ten years as janitor at the Stephenson County Courthouse.

SARAH J. (KLOEPPING) FORRY , 89, widow of Samuel S. Forry, died early today, November 11, 1948 at her home, 331 West American Street. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Conrad Kloepping, she was born April 16, 1859. She was the last of a family of eight children. Her marriage to Samuel S. Forry took place November 24, 1880. The husband died March 1917. Surviving are two foster daughters, Miss Matilda Forry of Freeport and Mrs. Helen Shafer of Rock Island, Illinois. Services will be held at 1:30 o’clock Saturday afternoon at the Walker mortuary, West Main Street. Rev. W. A. Stauffer, pastor of Oak Avenue Evangelical United Brethren Church, will conduct the services. Interment will be made in City Cemetery.

BLANCHE L. (STEFFEN) FRAKES , 82, of Freeport died Friday, Jan. 29, 1999, at Stephenson Nursing Center. The daughter of Elmer and Emeline (Shippy) Steffen, she was born March 16, 1916, in Freeport. She worked at Honeywell, Inc.'s Micro Switch division in Freeport for many years. Surviving are two sons, Roger (Regina) Snyder of Las Vegas, Nev., and Jaryl McLain of Wonder Lake; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Preceding her in death were her parents and one brother, Eldred Steffen. Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. in the Chapel of Peace in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. There will be no visitation. A memorial fund has been established. Arrangements were made by Walker Mortuary.

MRS. FRANCIS (HARRIS) FRANK , 67, of Forreston, died in her home Friday after an extended illness. She was the mother of Willard Frank of Rock Falls and Wilfred Frank of Sterling. Funeral rites will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday in the Evangelical United Brethren Church, Forreston, conducted by the Rev. R. R. Zeger. The burial will take place in Chapel Hill Cemetery, Freeport. Friends may call Saturday afternoon and evening at the Dougherty-DeGraff Funeral Home in Forreston. Mrs. Frank was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Harris and was born i Blanchardville, Wis. She was united in marriage with Francis Frank in 1909. They resided in Forreston the past 12 years. Surviving with the husband are three daughtes and five sons, Mrs. Elmer Gedrick of Indianapolis, Ind., Mrs. Gilbert Sponier of Mendota, Miss Carol Frank and Merle and Levan Frank of Freeport, Willard Frank of Rock Falls, Wilfred Frank of Sterling, and Bernell Frank of Forreston. She also leaves two sisters, 21 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

CATHERINE (MARKS) FREESEMAN , 91, a resident of Freeport for more than 80 years and one of those in the audience at the Lincoln-Douglas debate in Freeport in 1858, died last night at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J. T. Darrah, in Chicago. While attending a celebration held at the Darrah home in honor of her 90th birthday she had fallen and fractured both hips and had been bedfast since that time. She retained her faculties, until shortly before her death. She was a devout Catholic and while residing in Freeport was a member of St. Mary's church. Funeral services will be held at her home 1121 South Oak avenue, at 9 o'clock, Rt. Rev. C. F. Conley will celebrate the mass and interment will be made in City cemetery. The rosary will be recited at the home at 8 o'clock Sunday night. Catherine Marks was born at Stockton, Feb. 24, 1852, the daughter of Joseph and Mary marks, the oldest of six daughters. she often spoke of attending the famous Freeport debate. She came here as a small child and received her early education in Freeport schools. In 1872 she was united in marriage to Frank M. Edwards, of Athens, O. They resided in Ohio for a brief time, later moving to Rockford, where Mr. Edwards was engaged in the tailoring business. Three children of this union survive, Mrs. J. T. Darrah of Chicago, Mrs. J. D. Albertson of Toledo, O., Frank M. Edwards of Detroit, Mich. The husband passed away in 1885. She then returned to Freeport and in 1890 was married to the late John O. Freeseman, who was associated with the old German Insurance company here. A daughter born to this union, Mrs. Margaret Hartman, resides in the family home on South Oak avenue. Two sisters also survive, Mrs. Lena Julius and Mrs. Tena Snyder, both of Stockton. There are 14 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. She had many friends throughout Stephenson county.

THEODORE J. FREYTAG , of Pearl City died Monday, August 3, 1970 in Ted’s Market here, the grocery store he owned and operated, following an apparent heart attack. Mr. Freytag, who owned and operated the store for several years, was employed as an industrial engineer in Lanark. He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church here, Pearl City Masonic Lodge AF & AM, Pearl City Order of the Eastern Star, of which he was a part patron, White Shrine of Jerusalem, Scottish Rite Bodies Valley of Freeport, Pearl City Lions Club, and American Guild of Organists. He served as organist at Bethany United Church of Christ in Freeport for 12 years and was organist for the Freeport Consistory chorus. Born in West Side, Iowa, he was the son of the Rev. Karl and Lydia (Brinkmeier) Freytag. (Alice Horner’s note: The Social Security Death Index shows his date of birth as March 3, 1904.) He attended the University of Illinois at Champaign, Northwestern University at Evanston and the Conservatory of Music in New York. On March 6, 1943 he married Myrtle Rude in Chicago. Surviving are his widow; a son, T. J. Jr., at home; a foster son, Harold FRischer of Park Ridge; a brother, Arnold of Chicago; and three sisters, Mrs. Trudy Meck of Deerfield, Mrs. Dorothy Cannon of Evanston, and Mrs. Orvella Hansen of Chicago. His parents, a brother and a sister preceded him in death. (Alice Horner’s note: Trudy Meck’s full name is probably Titus Truman Meck.) Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Offenheiser-Schwarz Funeral Home here. Burial will be in Memory Gardens in Arlington Heights. Friends may call after 2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home where a Masonic service will be conducted at 8 p.m. that night. Friends may call Thursday night at the John Peterson Funeral Home on Fullerton Avenue in Chicago. A memorial fund has been established.

MARCUS FRISBE , 71, Iowa Falls, Ia., died Tuesday in a Rochester, Minn., hospital, according to word received by Freeport relatives. Mr. Frisbie was born March 26, 1879, near Lena the son of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Frisbie. He married Lottie Boeke about 50 years ago at Lena. His wife died Sept. 17, 1949. Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Clarence (Lottie) Stoner, and Mrs. William (Jessie) Batdorf, both of Norris Springs, Ia., and two brothers, William, Tacoma, Wash., and Carleton, Charles City, Ia. Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at Iowa Falls, Ia.

EMMA (STEFFEN) FROEHLING , 81 years old, former Freeporter and wife of Bernard Froehling, passed away yesterday morning (28 Mar 1939) at 10 o'clock in Chicago, where she had made her home for many years. She had been ill two months with heart disease and paralysis. The funeral will be held Friday morning...from the family home, 4417 North Troy street, Chicago, with services...later at the Catholic church of the parish in which she resided. Interment...Chicago. Emma Steffen was born in Freeport on July 26, 1857, daughter of Nicholas and Mary Steffen, early settlers of Freeport. She was the last of her generation. Two of her brothers, the late Stephen and Michael Steffen, were prominent in the business life of Freeport for many years. Surviving, besides her husband, a retired railway postal clerk, are three sons, Albert, Carl and Leon, all of Chicago, and five grandchildren. Two daughters preceded her in death.

KRYLE FULLER - Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Fuller parents of Private Kryle Fuller, who died in England on October 2nd, have received letters from the Red Cross headquarters in England and Washington telling of the death and burial of their son. In a letter sent by Lieutenant A. W. McMillian, of the American Red Cross, it is stated that the body was buried in the Military cemetery of Mourn Hill about two miles west of the old historic city of Winchester. Rev. Mr. McGuigan, an army chaplain, conducted the services. Private Fuller was buried with full military honors. Three volleys were fired over the grave by a squad of noncommissioned officers and the ceremonies were concluded with a sounding of "tap". A letter of sympathy was also received from Wm. C. Castle, of the American Red Cross headquarters, Washington.

J. about May 24 the dead soldier's parents Mr. and Mrs. Archie L. Fuller, were notified last nigh by the government. The remains will be taken direct to Kingston, Ill. for interment. The messaged received by Mr. and Mrs. Fuller was as follows:

The body of Private first class Kryle Fuller will arrive at army piers, Hoboken, about May 24, 1920, and will be shipped to you at Kingston, Illinois, at government expense at earliest practicable date. You will be telegraphed date of shipment. Please telegraph confirmation shipping instruction to Graves registration service Hoboken, N. J. Private Fuller was 2__ years old and was the youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Fuller, He was inducted into service at Camp Grant, Ill., and became a member of a machine gun company with the famous 86th division. He was taken ill shortly after arriving in England and died at Portsmouth. Up to the time he entered the service he was in the employ of the Freeport Gas company, He is remembered in Freeport as a fine young man. He was a musician and was a member of the Allington orchestra. His remains will be laid to rest at Kingston beside those of his elder brother, Erma L. Fuller, who died at Detroit, Mich., in April 1918, just two days before the time set for him to go to camp.

JOHN W. FUNSTON - The funeral of Rev. John W. Funston, 78, retired Methodist minister and for 49 years a member of the Rock River conference, who died Monday in Wesley Memorial hospital, Chicago, was held today at 2:30 p.m. in the chapel at 124 Madison street, Oak Park. Surviving are three daughters Winifred Funston, Mrs. Ruth Marquardt and Mrs. Edith Bryam. Mr. Funston was a former pastor of Embury church, Freeport.

WALTER FUREN - The body of Corporal Walter Furen, who died while serving with the American Expeditionary Forces in France is expected to arrive in Freeport this evening a message received today announced that the body left Weehawken, N.H., yesterday at 10:30 a.m. . A delegation from Freeport post of the American Legion will be at the union station this evening at 8 o'clock to meet the body, which is expected to arrive over the Chicago & Northwestern railroad. The remains will be taken to the Kuehner undertaking parlors, and the funeral will be held on Saturday afternoon, services to be conducted in the First Presbyterian church at 2 o'clock by the Rev. D. L. McNary, pastor. Members of the Legion are requested to assemble at the union depot at 7:45 o'clock tonight to serve as an escort while the body is being removed to the undertaking parlors. All Legionnaires are requested to report in uniform at Legion hall on Saturday afternoon not later than 1:30 o'clock to attend the funeral which is to be under the auspices of the local post.

Was Son of Pioneer Citizens of County; Born in Lancaster
Farm Boy Developed to Take Place in Industrial World; Funeral on Thursday
Frank E. Furst, one of the victims of Sunday night's motor tragedy, was born on the old Furst homestead, opposite the Fairview school in Lancaster township, March 12, 1874. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Furst, pioneers of Stephenson county. He attended the rural schools and later was graduated from the Freeport high school. He attended the University of Illinois for one year, later taking a general course at the University of Michigan. Mr. Furst studied law in the offices of Burchard and Burrell of this city and was admitted to the bar but he never engaged in the actual practice of law. Later he entered the employ of the W. T. Rawleigh company, becoming general manager. The Furst-McNess company, of which Mr. Furst was one of the founders, was organized in Freeport in February, 1908, and through the guidance of Mr. Furst and his associates became one of Freeport's most prominent industries. Starting in a modest manner the company gradually expanded until it took place among the leading business enterprises of its kind in the country, being ranked as the third largest company engaged in this particular line of business. The company occupied a few rooms in property located at South Liberty avenue and East Spring street, now occupied by Guyer and Calkins company. Later it moved into the building now occupied by the W. H. Shons company, South Liberty avenue. With the expansion of business it became necessary to acquire more floor space and the company leased the old Shoemaker building, East Wright street. Then the offices and sales rooms were moved to the sixth floor of the State bank boilding. Finding that their business was increasing in such a manner that a centralization of its entire activities would be for the best interests of the company officers ocquired the property on East Clark street, where the present factory and offices now stand. The company erected a $230,000 factory and office building there in 1919-20 and in 1930 an addition costing $150,000 was erected to meet the increase in business and demand for the company's products. Starting with the employment of only a few persons the Furst-McNess company now employs more than 200 regularly and has a large annual payroll. The company has representateives in every section of the United States as well as in many foreign countries. The company maintains branch offices in Memphis, Oakland, Baltimore, Detroit, Cleveland and other cities. The company also carries on business interests in Canada, Bombay, India, and Syria. Likewise it has business interests in South America. It manufactures and distributes more than 200 different kinds of products including medical preparations, extracts and flavors, nectars and food products, stock remedies, toilet preparations, soaps, insecticides, disinfectants, brushes, oils, washing compounds, poultry remedies, stock dips, pocket ledgers, cook books, pad stationery and many others. Besides being an astute business man, Mr. Furst had an artistic side of his nature, which was highly developed. LOUISE (MEIER) FYE , 90, widow of Jacob Fye and lifelong resident of Stephenson county, passed away last night at the home of her daughter Mrs. Edgar (Ora) Meier, 516 South West avenue, after a brief illness. Funeral services will be held at the Walker Mortuary, West Main street, at 2 o'clock (D.L.S.) time Wednesday afternoon. Interment will be made at Oakland. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Rudel she was born in Loran Township Nov. 29, 1856. She was united in marriage about 71 years ago to Jacob Fye, who preceded her in death. They resided on a farm in Loran until 1915, when they moved to Freeport. Mrs. Fye had been a lifelong member of the Methodist church at Pearl City. Her chief interests were her home, her family and her church, and she was esteemed by all who knew her. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Meier and Mrs. Olive Holsinger, Freeport and two grandsons. Mrs. Louise Fye has been faithful in attendance at the hour of worship. On Sunday morning July 20, she suffered a stroke at about 8:30. She never gained consciousness and passed away at 8:45 p.m. She would have been 91 years old the 29th of November. She has enjoyed fairly good health for one her age. In all her years she was never confined to a hospital. Our sympathy goes to those who were closest to her in the home circle.
