VIDA M. (ALTHAFER) HAMMOND , 87, of Pearl City , died Thursday, October 5, 1995 at Freeport Manor Nursing Home. Daughter of Henry and Laura (Penticoff) Althafer, she was born January 22, 1908 at Pearl City . She married Forrest G. Hammond November 13, 1937 in Dubuque , Iowa . A graduate of Pearl City High School , she was employed for 29 years as a linotype operator for the Pearl City News and later at Spurgeon’s Department Store in Freeport until retiring in 1973. She was a 50-year member of the Orphah Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, and a member of St. John Lutheran Church , Pearl City , and the Ladies of the Church. She served on the Pearl City Library Board when it organized in 1946, as well as serving as the first president of the Pearl City American Legion Auxiliary. She is survived by one sister-in-law, Joyce Althafer of Davis; nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were her husband, three sisters, Ivy Athafer, Nora Klitz, and Bernice Day; seven brothers, John, Arthur, Oscar, Florin, LaVere, Wayne , and Floyd Althafer. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. John Lutheran Church in Pearl City , with the Rev. Barbara Rapp officiating. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery , Pearl City . Friends may call Saturday after 1 p.m. until the time of service at the church. A memorial fund has been established in her name for St. John Lutheran Church.

JOHN F. HARTOG , 72, of Freeport , a longtime educator and administrator, died Wednesday, April 7, 1999 at his home. He was born December 4, 1926 in Stephenson County , the son of John R. and Fred (TerHark) Hartog. He and Helen L. Hiteman were married June 11, 1950 at Forreston. During World War II he served in the Navy. He graduated from the University of Dubuque with a bachelor’s degree in education in 1950, and in 1954 received his master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin in Madison . He began his career in education in 1950 as a teacher at Henney School , and became principal of the school the next year. In 1959 he moved to Douglas School where he was principal until he became assistant superintendent and Title I director of Freeport School District 145 in 1966. He also served as principal of Empire School from 1973 to 1983. From that time until his retirement in 1986, he was Stephenson County regional superintendent of schools. He was a life member of Second Presbyterian Church where he served as elder and treasurer. Active in Boy Scouts of America, he was a troop leader and member of the Eagle Scout Advisory Board. Other memberships included Freeport Lions Club, past president and secretary-treasurer, 50-year member and chaplain of Freeport American Legion, charter member of Freeport Housing Authority, formerly Family Life Center board, past president of Northwest Rock River Division of Illinois Elementary Principals Association, National Department of Elementary School Principals, Phi Delta Kappa, and 40 and 8 Board. Surviving are his wife; two sons, Thomas J. ( Lynn ) Hartog, D. D. S. of Freeport and Timothy (Michelle) Hartog of Elizabeth, Colorado; one daughter, Susan Hartog of Washington, D. C.; two granddaughters, Lauren and Leigh Hartog; and two brothers, Robert (Bonny) Hartog of Freeport and Stanley (Pat) Hartog of Rockford. Preceding him in death were his parents and one sister, Jeanette. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Second Presbyterian Church with the Rev. William C. Koch officiating. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery and Mausoleum. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Burke-Tubbs Funeral Home. A memorial fund has been established for Second Presbyterian Church.

EDWIN J. HEEREN , 83, of Freeport died Friday, November 12, 1999 at OSF St. Anthony Medical Center in Rockford . He was born December 28, 1915 in Freeport to Julius and Rose (Finkbeiner) Heeren. On December 2, 1941 he and Ethel J. Haack were married in Florence Station. She died January 28, 1996. A lifetime farmer in the Florence area, he also owned and operated Heeren Insurance Agency. He served as president of the board of Forreston Mutual Insurance Company and was a board member of Rockford Mutual Insurance Company. In addition, he was a member of Faith United Methodist Church , Elks and Eagles clubs, and was president of the Shannon Fire Protection District. His pastimes included playing euchre with friends and woodworking. Surviving are two sons, Gene (Lynne) Heeren of Baileyville and Rick (Rae Ann) Heeren of Heyworth; four grandchildren, Rachel, Ryan and Reed Heeren of Heyworth and Shane (Lorrie) Heeren of Shannon; three great-grandchildren, Kyle, Taylor, and Drake Heeren of Shannon; and one sister, Marie Haller of Freeport . Preceding him in death were his wife and one sister. The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Faith United Methodist Church with the Rev. Douglas Q. Bowden officiating. Burial will be at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens . Visitation will be from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday at Burke-Tubbs Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established for Faith United Methodist Church .

JULIUS G. HEEREN , 64, well-known farmer and stock breeder, passed away at his home in Florence Township at 12:30 o’clock Sunday morning, January 5, 1941 after an illness of two years duration. Julius Heeren was born at Freeport September 26, 1876, the son of Hero and Anna Heeren. He was united in marriage to Miss Rose Finkbeiner, who survives, as do three children, Miss Marie Heeren, Mrs. Margaret Heine, and Edwin Heeren, all residing at home. Other survivors are a sister, Mrs. Orson Bowers of Freeport , and a brother, Ben Heeren of Pecatonica. His parents, three brothers, and a sister preceded him in death. Mr. Heeren was an active man, possessed of a very kind disposition and esteemed by all who knew him. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 o’clock Wednesday afternoon in the Walker Mortuary. Rev. Harvey D. Gabel, pastor of Florence Evangelical church, officiating. Interment will be made in Oakland Cemetery . Friends may call at the home until 10 o’clock Wednesday morning; after that at the Walker Mortuary

LENA HOCKMAN , 89, a resident of St. Ann Center in Rockford , formerly of Freeport , died Monday, December 18, 1995 at the Center. She was a member of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Kent, Pearl City Eastern Star, and Blackhawk Home Bureau. Born April 7, 1906 in Freeport , she was a daughter of Frederick and Janna (Nieman) TerHark. She married Morrell M. Hockman on February 6, 1935. He died December 1, 1971. Surviving are two sons, Harold (Martha) Hockman of Westfir, Oregon, and gary Hockman of Pearl City; two daughters, Carolyn Hockman of University Park and Joyce (Louis) Fisher of Rockford; four grandchildren; two brothers, Fred TerHark of Shannon and Richard TerHark of Freeport; and two sisters, Anna Riebe and Jennie (Avery) Keppen, both of Waukegan. Also preceding her in death was one son; three sisters and three brothers. Funeral service will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Walker Mortuary with the Rev. Barbara Rapp of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Kent officiating. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery .

SUSAN HUNT , 91, of Monroe, a former schoolteacher, died Friday, December 18, 1992 at Monroe Manor. She taught school at White, Arlington , Brookings, and Washington Springs, S. D., Savanna and Freeport schools. She was a graduate of Huron College in Huron, S. D., Carleton College in Northfield , Minn. , and National College of Education in Evanston . Her memberships included National Retired Teachers Association ( Illinois and Green County , Wisconsin ), Rebekah Lodge in Monroe , Colonel Benjamin Harrison Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution. She was a life member of Order of Eastern Star in White, S. D. She was a member of Union Presbyterian Church in Monroe . She was born January 4, 1901 in Centre Hill , Pennsylvania , a daughter of John and Anna (Goodhart) Evans. On June 6, 1959 she married Perviance Clark Hunt in Dubuque , Iowa . He died July 17, 1966. Surviving are one step-daughter, Irene (Leonard) Bauman, two step-grandchildren, Jim Bauman and Lois Ewald, all of Monroe ; three step-great-grandchildren; and one step-great-great-grandchild. Preceding her in death were a brother, Thomas Wagner Evans, and a sister who died in infancy. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Shriner-Neushwander Funeral Home in Monroe . The Rev. Philip M. Jones of Union Presbyterian Church will officiate. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Monroe . Friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday from noon until the time of service.

REITA MAE HYSLOP ,102, of Freeport died Friday, July 16, 1993 at her home. She was born May 17, 1891 at Tecumseh , Nebraska . She was the widow of the late Dr. R. J. Hyslop of Freeport . She left Nebraska as a young girl and entered nurses training school at Madison General Hospital in Madison , Wis. , where she met and married her late husband, Dr. Hyslop. She and her family moved to Freeport in the mid 1930s where her husband established a medical and surgical practice. Mrs. Hyslop was active in local and civic affairs until her late years. He vacationed with her family in Fence Lake in Lac Du Flambeau, Wis. , for many years, where the family had property. She is survived by one daughter, Martha Mattingly of Freeport; one son, Robert (Virgi) Hyslop of Lac Du Flambeau; four grandsons, Robert, James, Daniel, and Richard Mattingly; five great-grandchildren; and one sister, Nell Lorentz of Colorado Springs , Colorado . In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Brendan Dempsey of the church officiating. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery . Friends may call from 9 am Tuesday until time of service at First Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established for First Presbyterian Church Music Fund and the YWCA. Walker Mortuary is in charge of the service.

ROBERT J. HYSLOP , 1455 Bolkinwood Drive , longtime Freeport physician and surgeon, died at his home Thursday evening, November 15, 1972, following an extended illness. In 1933 he came to Freeport , where he practiced medicine until his retirement December 20, 1969. He was chief of staff at the local hospital for 11 years. He was a past president of the Stephenson County Medical Society and taught may classes of nurses in Freeport during his long career. Upon his retirement in 1969, he was honored by the Illinois Medical Society for his 50 years of medical practice. He was a fellow of the American College of Surgeons since 1930 and a 33-year member of the International College of Surgeons. He received his M. D. degree from Rush Medical College , Chicago , in 1919 and interned at Cook County Hospital , Chicago , in 1920. After 11 years in general practice in Herrin, he returned to Rush for two years of postgraduate work in surgery. His first practice in Herrin was for the W. & F. Mining Co. and he was in “Bloody Herrin” in the days of the riots of the 1920s, when miners struck and fighting resulted in 40 fatalities. While there he was an officer of the Williamson County Medical Society. He was a former president of the Freeport YMCA and a former commander of the Freeport American Legion. He served for a time on the Salvation Army Board and the Visiting Nurses Association Board. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Evergreen Masonic lodge, Freeport Consistory, and Tebala Shrine of Rockford . He was born at LaValle , Wisconsin on March 16, 1895, son of James W, and Lulu (McWilliams) Hyslop. He married Reita Mae Bridges in Chicago on November 28, 1917. Surviving are his widow; a son, Robert W. of Minneapolis , Minn. , a daughter, Mrs. Martha Jane Mattingly of Freeport; four grandsons; two sisters, Mrs. John S (Lois) Weisz of Wayne and Mrs. Oliver B. (Ruth) Wynn of Madison, Wis.; and a brother, Dr. Volney B. Hyslop of Hayward, Wisconsin. He was preceded in death by a brother. Funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday in First Presbyterian Church, with the Rev, Terry Timson officiating. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery . Friends may call at Walker Mortuary from 2 to 9 p.m. Sunday. A memorial fund has been established for Freeport Memorial Hospital for kidney and heart equipment.
