VIOLET L. (BUEHLER) HAMM
, 89, of Freeport died Monday, June 4 2001 at Freeport Memorial Hospital . Born October 1, 1911 in Monroe , Wisconsin she was the daughter of Arthur J. and Rosa (Miller-Keller) Buehler. She married Harold E. Hamm June 7, 1932. He died December 1993. She worked at Crum & Forster Insurance, Montgomery Wards, and she was a secretary at St. Francis School for seven years. She was a member of St. John United Church of Christ and a charter member of Illinois State Genealogy Society. Surviving are one son, Dick ( Lorraine ) Hamm of Cedarville; one sister, Frances L. Heck of Freeport ; four grandchildren, Mary Jo (Dan) Schmertman of Cleveland, Ohio, Michelle A. (Tim) Hartog of Elizabeth, Colorado, Lorna L. (Kirk) Chezem of Ridott, and Joanne L. Hamm of Dakota; and six great-grandchildren. Preceding her in death were her parents; husband; daughter-in-law, Geraldine M. Hamm; and brother-in-law, Clarence Hamm. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Walker Mortuary. Buriall will be at Oakland Cemetery and Mausoleum. Friends may call from 10 a.m. Wednesday to time of service at the funeral home.
VIDA M. (ALTHAFER) HAMMOND
, 87, of Pearl City , died Thursday, October 5, 1995 at Freeport Manor Nursing Home. Daughter of Henry and Laura (Penticoff) Althafer, she was born January 22, 1908 at Pearl City . She married Forrest G. Hammond November 13, 1937 in Dubuque , Iowa . A graduate of Pearl City High School , she was employed for 29 years as a linotype operator for the Pearl City News and later at Spurgeon’s Department Store in Freeport until retiring in 1973. She was a 50-year member of the Orphah Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, and a member of St. John Lutheran Church , Pearl City , and the Ladies of the Church. She served on the Pearl City Library Board when it organized in 1946, as well as serving as the first president of the Pearl City American Legion Auxiliary. She is survived by one sister-in-law, Joyce Althafer of Davis; nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were her husband, three sisters, Ivy Athafer, Nora Klitz, and Bernice Day; seven brothers, John, Arthur, Oscar, Florin, LaVere, Wayne , and Floyd Althafer. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. John Lutheran Church in Pearl City , with the Rev. Barbara Rapp officiating. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery , Pearl City . Friends may call Saturday after 1 p.m. until the time of service at the church. A memorial fund has been established in her name for St. John Lutheran Church.
RUTHANN F. (HIRD) HARDMAN
, 70, of Freeport, died Sunday, August 20, 2008, at Provena St. Joseph Nursing Center.
Born February 1, 1938 in Freeport she was the daughter of Albert and Almeda (Brydson) Hird.
She was retired from Micro Switch.
Ruthann was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and the Eagles Ladies Auxiliary.
Surviving is her son, Richie (Kathy) Hardman of Rockford; 1 step grandchild, Megan Dunn of Schaumberg; 4 nieces, Julie Jean Skaggs of Sandy Springs, Georgia, Joanne (Don) Engle, Kathy Barrett, and Cindy Barrett all of Freeport; 2 nephews, Mike Barrett of Freeport and Rick Barrett of Lena.
She was preceded in death by her parents and 2 sisters, Jeanette Thomasson and Anita Barrett.
Funeral service will be Wednesday 1 p.m. at Walker Mortuary with Reverend Julie Bent of Trinity United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in the Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.
Friends may call Wednesday 12 noon until time of service at Walker Mortuary.
A memorial has been established for FHN Hospice.

ARDELL ESTELLE (YOUNG) HARRISON
, a lifelong resident of Stephenson County, died in her home, 504 S. Walnut Ave., Sunday after an extended illness.
The former Ardell Young was born in Cedarville Feb. 16, 1870, the daughter of Robert and Louisa Young. Her marriage to Robert Harrison took place January 4, 1897.
She was a member of Embury Methodist Church and the Woman's Society for Christian Service of that church.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Alfred L. (Ruth) McIlheran, Blair, Neb., one son, Glenn G., Freeport; two sisters, Mrs. Margaret Hays and Mrs. Sadie E. Moore, both of Freeport; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Her husband died in September 1931, and a son, Robert, died in 1953.
Services will be in the Walker Mortuary at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday with the Rev. Paul Bloomquist, pastor of Embury Church, officiating. Interment will be in Oakland Cemetery. Friends may call at the Mortuary after 2 p.m. Tuesday.
ROBERT HARRISON
, a prominent Lena merchant and a former resident of Freeport, passed away at his home in Lena late yesterday afternoon. Although he had been in failing health for the past four years he was confined to his bed only since last Thursday.
Funeral services will be conducted from the Lena Methodist church at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon. Rev. Ivan Obenshain, Lena, will conduct the services, and internment will be made in Oakland cemetery.
Robert Harrison was born at Maustin, Wis., Mar, 27, 1866, a son of Edward and Ellen Harrison, both now deceased. While a young man he learned the harness trade at Maustin, later moving to Freeport where he was engaged in that business by the firm of Bringham and Bowier for many years.
He was united in marriage in Freeport to Ardell Young, January 14, 1897. The same year he moved to Winslow where he conducted a retail harness shop for a number of years. During the world war he moved to Davenport Iowa, where he was employed by the government in the manufacture of saddlery and harness. He was known as a very efficient tradesman. Since 1922 he conducted a grocery store at Lena
His wife and following children survive; Mrs. A.S. McIlheran, Naperville; Robert E. and Glenn G. Harrison, both of Freeport. The following sisters and brothers also survive; H.K. Harrison, Stockton; E.C. Harrison, Encinitas, Calif.; Mrs. J.W. McNown, Mauston Wis.; Mrs. E.G. Bloedow, Edgely, N.D. There are also four grandchildren. Mr. Harrison was a home loving man and his passing comes as a shock both to members of his family and their many friends. He was a member of the Methodist church.
JULIUS G. HEEREN
, 64, well-known farmer and stock breeder, passed away at his home in Florence Township at 12:30 o’clock Sunday morning, January 5, 1941 after an illness of two years duration. Julius Heeren was born at Freeport September 26, 1876, the son of Hero and Anna Heeren. He was united in marriage to Miss Rose Finkbeiner, who survives, as do three children, Miss Marie Heeren, Mrs. Margaret Heine, and Edwin Heeren, all residing at home. Other survivors are a sister, Mrs. Orson Bowers of Freeport , and a brother, Ben Heeren of Pecatonica. His parents, three brothers, and a sister preceded him in death. Mr. Heeren was an active man, possessed of a very kind disposition and esteemed by all who knew him. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 o’clock Wednesday afternoon in the Walker Mortuary. Rev. Harvey D. Gabel, pastor of Florence Evangelical church, officiating. Interment will be made in Oakland Cemetery . JACK HESSENIUS
, 72. of Cedarville died Tuesday October 30, 2001 at Freeport Manor Nursing Home. He was born May 25, 1929 in Cedar Rapids , Iowa to John and Myrtle (Huron) Hessenius. On May 17, 1952 he and Lucille Jean Amendt were married in Freeport . Jack was self-employed in auto and farm parts sales for 35 years. Prior to that, he farmed several years and did landscaping. During the Korean war, he served two years as corporal in the U.S. Army. For 50 years, he was a member of the Masonic Excelsior Lodge. He was also a member of the Cedarville American Legion and Stephenson County Farm Bureau. Surviving are his wife; two daughters, Lucinda (Dennis) Goetz of Freeport and Corrine (Don) Wachter of Mesa, Arizona; three sons, Craig (Dee) and Mark (Barbara), both of Freeport and Kurt (Diane) of Sturtevant, Wisconsin; 12 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild; two brothers, Richard (Joyce) of Freeport, Texas, and Robert (Marcia) of Oshkosh, Wisconsin, and Florida. The funeral will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Chapel of Peace at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Freeport with the Rev. Marjorie Drickey officiating. Burial will follow. A Masonic service will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Saturday and visitation will follow until time of service at the chapel. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established for the Shriners’ Hospital.
LUCIUS M. HIATT
- Friends here were advised today of the death last night in Freeport of Lucius M. Hiatt, 58 years old, widely known band master and orchestra leader. He was for 11 years director of music at University of Indiana. He left a widow and five children. (The Illinois Statewide Death Index gives the date as July 16, 1924, in Ridott, Stephenson County, Illinois.)

, Yesterday, V. G. Chaffee received a telegram from Natchez, Mississippi, announcing the death of his sister, Mrs. Eveline Hiserodt, wife of the late Capt. J. B. Hiserodt. abt Nov. 19, 1898
J.B. HISERODT
, a well known and wealthy planter of Black River, Concordia parish, died suddenly at his home on Oak street, this city, Tuesday, June 7, 1898, while surrounded by several of his most intimate friends. Death was due to apoplexy of the lungs.
Captain Hiserodt was in excellent health and had only a few hours before his death returned from Louisiana, where he was in attendance upon the wedding of his friend, Mr. A. T. Bowie, Jr. After supper he, together with a party of friends, was sitting in the front yard and chatting pleasantly on various topics of the day. Suddenly he was attacked with a coughing spell. He called to his friends, and they becoming alarmed, sent for Dr. Beckman, But medical aid could render no assistance and he dies within a few moments.
Captain Hiserodt leaves a wife and three daughters, all of whom are married. They are Mrs. Eugene Fleming, Mrs. Lew Sharp and Mrs. F. D. Brown. The funeral services were held Friday, June 10, at the family residence, the services being performed by Rev. Chas. Morris, assisted by Rev. Mr. Turner, rector of Trinity Church. A large number of friends from various parts of the State and Louisiana were present, among them being Captain L. V. Cooley, of New Orleans, an old Mississippi river steamboatman and a life-long friend of the deceased. Other prominent river men were present to pay their last, though sad respects to their deceased friend. The casket containing all that was mortal of their friend, was covered with flowers which had been sent in great profusion as testimonials of the sincere affection and esteem of the sorrowing friends. A large concourse of people followed the remains to their last resting place in the Natchez cemetery. Capt. Hiserodt was one of the best and widest known of all Tensas planters, having several large cotton plantations on the Tensas river and was a universal favorite with all who knew him.
LENA HOCKMAN
, 89, a resident of St. Ann Center in Rockford , formerly of Freeport , died Monday, December 18, 1995 at the Center. She was a member of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Kent, Pearl City Eastern Star, and Blackhawk Home Bureau. Born April 7, 1906 in Freeport , she was a daughter of Frederick and Janna (Nieman) TerHark. She married Morrell M. Hockman on February 6, 1935. He died December 1, 1971. Surviving are two sons, Harold (Martha) Hockman of Westfir, Oregon, and gary Hockman of Pearl City; two daughters, Carolyn Hockman of University Park and Joyce (Louis) Fisher of Rockford; four grandchildren; two brothers, Fred TerHark of Shannon and Richard TerHark of Freeport; and two sisters, Anna Riebe and Jennie (Avery) Keppen, both of Waukegan. Also preceding her in death was one son; three sisters and three brothers. Funeral service will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Walker Mortuary with the Rev. Barbara Rapp of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Kent officiating. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery .
ANDREW HOLMES
, 61, Freeport, a WPA worker was drowned at 6:10 p.m. Saturday, September 3, 1938, when a boat in which he was rowing on the Pecatonica River on his way to set fishing lines became waterlogged and sank. His body was recovered at 10 p.m. by Jack Soladay, river bank resident, and was taken to the Eichmeier & Becker funeral home. Holmes was accompanied by Dorothy Johnson, formerly known as Dorothy Bartsch, 36, a one time resident of Stockton, at the time he lost his life. They had left the river bank in a boat that was leaking, according to witnesses, and proceeded around a bend in the stream near the Balles ice plant, where the boat began to settle in the water. Arthur Holmes, 38, son of the dead man, helped the Johnson woman to safety but was unable to save his father.
Captains William Washburn, Gus Bush, and Fireman James Ryan, of the fire department, responded to the police call and assisted in the search for the drowned man. Crowds lined the Cedarville bridge as the search continued, remaining until the body was recovered. A plague of mosquitoes hampered the searchers in their work.
Mr. Holmes was born in Sweden September 15, 1872. His wife passed away in 1914. He is survived by two sons and two daughters, Arthur Holmes, Freeport; Clarence Holmes, Rockford; Mrs. Floyd Becker, Rockford; Mrs. Richard Welch, Loves Park. Funeral services were conducted at the Eichmeier & Becker funeral home at 2 o’clock this afternoon. Rev. Edward A. Arends, pastor of St. John’s Evangelical Church, conducted the services and interment was made in the City Cemetery.
MARY ELEANOR (RYBOLT) HOWE
, was the daughter of Henry and Elizabeth (McNear) Rybolt. She married Zachary Taylor Howe on July 19, 1868.
She was a member of the Baptist church in Freeport. She had the characteristics of a home loving woman, giving her time and talents to the family of growing girls she had raised. She was a quiet unpretentious woman, a good neighbor and a devoted wife.
In addition to her husband, she was survived by her five daughters, twelve grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, three brothers and two sisters. She was predeceased by her parents and two daughters, Marion and Pearl.

, The infant child of Mr. and Mrs. George Hunt, of Hitt, died Tuesday afternoon at four o'clock. The funeral will be held today at 10 o'clock at the Union Church.
SUSAN HUNT
, 91, of Monroe, a former schoolteacher, died Friday, December 18, 1992 at Monroe Manor. She taught school at White, Arlington , Brookings, and Washington Springs, S. D., Savanna and Freeport schools. She was a graduate of Huron College in Huron, S. D., Carleton College in Northfield , Minn. , and National College of Education in Evanston . Her memberships included National Retired Teachers Association ( Illinois and Green County , Wisconsin ), Rebekah Lodge in Monroe , Colonel Benjamin Harrison Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution. She was a life member of Order of Eastern Star in White, S. D. She was a member of Union Presbyterian Church in Monroe .
She was born January 4, 1901 in Centre Hill , Pennsylvania , a daughter of John and Anna (Goodhart) Evans. On June 6, 1959 she married Perviance Clark Hunt in Dubuque , Iowa . He died July 17, 1966. Surviving are one step-daughter, Irene (Leonard) Bauman, two step-grandchildren, Jim Bauman and Lois Ewald, all of Monroe ; three step-great-grandchildren; and one step-great-great-grandchild. Preceding her in death were a brother, Thomas Wagner Evans, and a sister who died in infancy.
Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Shriner-Neushwander Funeral Home in Monroe . The Rev. Philip M. Jones of Union Presbyterian Church will officiate. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Monroe . Friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday from noon until the time of service.
REITA MAE HYSLOP
,102, of Freeport died Friday, July 16, 1993 at her home. She was born May 17, 1891 at Tecumseh , Nebraska . She was the widow of the late Dr. R. J. Hyslop of Freeport . She left Nebraska as a young girl and entered nurses training school at Madison General Hospital in Madison , Wis. , where she met and married her late husband, Dr. Hyslop. She and her family moved to Freeport in the mid 1930s where her husband established a medical and surgical practice. Mrs. Hyslop was active in local and civic affairs until her late years. He vacationed with her family in Fence Lake in Lac Du Flambeau, Wis. , for many years, where the family had property.
She is survived by one daughter, Martha Mattingly of Freeport; one son, Robert (Virgi) Hyslop of Lac Du Flambeau; four grandsons, Robert, James, Daniel, and Richard Mattingly; five great-grandchildren; and one sister, Nell Lorentz of Colorado Springs , Colorado . In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.
Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Brendan Dempsey of the church officiating. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery . Friends may call from 9 am Tuesday until time of service at First Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established for First Presbyterian Church Music Fund and the YWCA. Walker Mortuary is in charge of the service.
