JOSEPH AUGUSTUS KREPS - The Lena Star: The community was shocked to learn of the death of J.A. Kreps, one of our aged citizens. The deceased had been in his usual good health until a few days ago, when he took a severe cold which resulted in pneumonia and his death occurred on Tuesday evening about 8 o/clock. J.A. Kreps was born in Greencastle, Pennsylvania, February 12, 1834, and died in Lena, Ill., Dec 6, 1904. At an early age Mr. Kreps went to work in a carriage shop in his native town, and through the faithful discharge of his duties soon became foreman of the shops. He continued in this work until 1863, when on account of the war, he came west and began business in Lanark, Ill. His business was successful and he acquired possession of a fine farm about three miles west of that town. About 27 years ago he traded this farm for what is known as the Wetzel farm two miles west of Lena. During his early residence on this place he conducted a carriage shop in Lena in connection with his farm work. Seeing, however, that more attention should be given to his farm he retired from the carriage business. In his farming he was very successful and he made the place his home until about three years ago when on account of the advanced age of both himself and wife, he came to Lena and purchased the fine home on North Railroad Street known as the Underwood property.

Early in life he saw the necessity of living a Christian life and united himself with the German Baptist church and one of the characteristics of his life was that he not only believed in religion but he lived religion; it was manifested in his every day life, publicly as well as privately. His departure robs the home of a loving husband and father, the community of a specimen of model citizenship, the church of a faithful deacon, while the family and friends and community mourn the loss of the deceased, yet for him to depart is gain. He is survived by his wife, (formerly Sarah McCune and to whom he was united in Pennsylvania on Oct 4, 1855) and nine children as follows: Mrs. Jos Rickard, Mrs. Ezra Lutz, Mrs. Geo Lutz, and Mrs. Geo. Sloatman of Lena; Mrs. Geo Smith and Mrs. Geo Bobb of Waddams Grove; Orpha at home, Alfred of Bordulac N.D. and Mrs. Grant Bowman of Lemon, Claif.

2nd Notice
The Daily Journal 7 December 1904: J.A. Kreps, one of the old residents, died at his home in this city last night about 8 o’clock, after an illness of four days with pneumonia.
